Can Branded Search Volume Measure LLM Visibility and Share of Search?

Branded search volume cannot measure LLM visibility directly, but it is one of the better proxies for whether that visibility turns into demand. When AI answers recommend you, some buyers later search your name or type your web address, so branded searches and direct visits rise without any tracked AI click. Treat branded search as a downstream signal. Pair it with direct measurement of AI answers, and use a control group or a timeline of other marketing before crediting any change to AI.

What can branded search tell you about AI visibility?

The chain is simple: a buyer asks an AI assistant, sees your name, and later searches for you in Google or visits your site directly. That leaves traces in three places:

  • Branded queries in Search Console: impressions and clicks for searches containing your brand or product names. A regex filter on the query dimension lets you separate them from non-branded searches.
  • Search interest over time: tools such as Google Trends show relative interest in your brand name and in competitors' names.
  • Direct and branded traffic in analytics: sessions with no referrer, and sessions from branded search, especially to deep pages rather than the homepage.

What it cannot tell you is which engine recommended you, for which questions, or what it said. For that you still need to check answers; see whether asking LLMs directly is a valid way to measure visibility.

What is Share of Search, and does it apply to AI?

Share of Search is your brand's share of all branded searches in your category: your brand searches divided by the total brand searches for you and your competitors. The marketing effectiveness researcher Les Binet presented work through the IPA in 2020 showing that share of search tends to track, and often lead, market share in several categories.

It applies to AI in one specific way: if AI answers steer more buyers towards you than towards rivals, your share of branded search should rise over time. That makes Share of Search a useful outcome measure alongside AI share of voice:

Measure What it captures Timing
AI share of voice How often answers name or recommend you Leading: changes first
Share of Search How often people search for you versus rivals Middle: follows exposure
Market share or sales Who buys Lagging

If AI share of voice rises and Share of Search follows a few weeks or months later, that is reasonable evidence that AI exposure is creating demand. If AI share of voice rises and Share of Search does not move, the exposure may not be reaching buyers, or may not be persuasive. How AI share of voice is calculated is explained in what AI search share of voice is and how to measure it.

How do you use branded search and direct traffic as proxies for AI visibility?

Set up a small, consistent view:

  1. Define brand terms: company name, product names, common misspellings and the founder's name if people search it. Keep the list fixed.
  2. Track branded queries weekly in Search Console with a regex filter, and brand interest in a trends tool for you and three to five competitors.
  3. Track direct visits to deep pages, such as pricing, comparison or product pages, which people rarely type from memory unless they were pointed there.
  4. Track AI referral sessions separately, so you can see whether branded demand moves with or without them.
  5. Keep a marketing timeline: campaigns, PR, launches, events and price changes, so you can rule them out.
  6. Plot all of it against your AI recommendation rate from repeated checks of your question set.

Look for co-movement over months, not weeks. Weekly branded data is noisy and heavily seasonal.

How do you run a branded-search lift test to estimate AI demand generation?

A lift test compares what happened where you improved AI visibility with what happened where you did not:

  1. Choose a split. Regions, product lines or services that are searched separately. For example, improve AI visibility for product line A and leave product line B alone.
  2. Take a baseline of branded searches for both, for 8–12 weeks.
  3. Do the AI visibility work for the test group only: pages, listings, third-party placements.
  4. Confirm the work changed AI answers, by re-running the relevant questions. If recommendation rates did not rise, there is nothing to test.
  5. Measure branded searches for both groups for another 8–12 weeks.
  6. Subtract the control group's change from the test group's change. What remains is your estimated lift.

Keep other marketing equal across the two groups during the test, or note where it was not. Small businesses with low branded volume may need a longer test, because a handful of searches a week is too noisy to read.

Can AI answers increase branded searches and conversions without adding traffic?

Yes, and this is the main reason proxies matter. Many AI answers are read without a click. A buyer who reads a recommendation may search your name days later, visit directly, or call you. In analytics, that shows up as branded search or direct traffic, not as an AI referral.

Signs this is happening:

  • branded search and direct visits rise while AI referral sessions stay flat;
  • conversion rate from branded and direct visits rises, because those visitors arrive already persuaded;
  • more new customers say they heard about you from ChatGPT or another assistant when asked on forms or sales calls;
  • sales calls start with buyers who already know your pricing or positioning.

Adding "AI assistant" as an option in "How did you hear about us?" is often the cheapest way to confirm it.

Does being cited by Google AI Overviews increase branded search demand?

There is no robust public evidence either way yet. It is plausible that being named in an Overview raises brand recall, and so later branded searches, because people read Overviews but rarely click them. Pew Research Center found clicks on links inside Google's AI summaries in only about 1% of visits where a summary appeared. But being cited as a source is not the same as being named in the text. A link to your page under an Overview may leave no impression of your brand at all.

You can test it for your own site. Track the queries where your brand is named in Overviews, compare branded search trends before and after you started appearing, and use queries where you are not named as a control. Treat the result as directional.

What are the limits of branded search as a proxy?

  • Confounders: advertising, PR, word of mouth, seasonality and competitor problems all move branded search.
  • Brand names that are common words make branded data unreliable without careful filtering.
  • Low volume: small brands may have too few searches to show changes.
  • Engine mix: AI demand may lead to searches in other engines or on marketplaces, not only Google.
  • Lag: the gap between an AI recommendation and a search can be days or months, depending on the purchase.

Use branded search as corroboration, next to direct measurement of AI answers and self-reported attribution, never as the only evidence.

What do people ask about branded search and AI visibility?

Is branded search a leading or lagging indicator of AI visibility?

Lagging relative to AI answers, leading relative to sales. It moves after exposure and usually before revenue.

Should I use Search Console or a keyword tool for branded volume?

Search Console for your own brand, because it reflects real impressions. Trends or keyword tools for comparing with competitors, whose Search Console data you cannot see.

Can direct traffic be used on its own?

Not reliably. Direct traffic also includes bookmarks, email clicks without tracking and many other sources. Deep-page direct visits are a better signal than total direct traffic.

How long should I wait before judging a branded-search lift?

At least two to three months after AI answers change, longer for considered purchases.
