Can Inconsistent NAP Data Stop ChatGPT From Recommending a Local Business?

Inconsistent name, address and phone (NAP) data rarely stops ChatGPT from recommending a local business on its own, but it makes a recommendation less likely and often wrong. When listings disagree, an assistant may quote the wrong phone number or send customers to an old address. It may split your reviews across duplicate listings or conclude that you have moved or closed. It may also leave you out in favour of a competitor whose details agree everywhere. Local answers lean heavily on listings: BrightLocal's 2026 study found Google Business Profile made up 28.5% of local AI citations and Yelp 8.53%. In a test of London businesses reported by Search Engine Journal, assistants gave a wrong postcode about one time in ten, even when the town was specified.

How does inconsistent NAP affect AI answers?

BBB, Angi and MapQuest also appear regularly among the cited sources, so errors on any of them can surface in answers.

  • Wrong details. Assistants repeat whichever version they find, including old phone numbers and addresses.
  • Duplicate listings split evidence. Reviews and mentions spread across two listings, so neither looks as strong as a competitor with one.
  • "Moved" or "closed" errors. An old address still listed on directories can make the business look relocated or shut. How this happens is covered in why ChatGPT recommends businesses that have closed.
  • Name variants look like different businesses. "Smith & Sons Plumbing", "Smith Plumbing LLC" and "Smith and Sons" may not be merged.
  • Lower confidence. Assistants tend to name businesses whose details are consistent and corroborated.

How consistent NAP data across the web can improve AI citation likelihood

Consistency does three things for AI answers. It lets assistants connect every mention and review to one business, so evidence adds up rather than splitting. It gives them facts they can state without hedging. And it removes the conflicts that lead to errors. To get there:

  1. Decide the canonical version of your name, address, phone number and website, exactly as you want it to appear, including suite numbers and formatting.
  2. Use it on your website: footer, contact page, location pages and LocalBusiness structured data.
  3. Fix the core listings first: Google Business Profile, Bing Places and Apple Business.
  4. Update data aggregators, which pass details to many smaller directories.
  5. Fix the directories that appear in AI answers for your category and town.
  6. Remove or merge duplicates, and mark old locations as closed or moved rather than leaving them live.
  7. Recheck quarterly, and whenever anything changes.

Do Yelp, Foursquare, and other local citations still matter for AI search?

Yes, but each platform reaches AI answers differently, depending on whether AI crawlers can read it:

Platform AI crawler access in robots.txt How it reaches AI answers
Google Business Profile Google's own data Google's AI features directly
Yelp Business pages blocked to OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity crawlers Licensed to OpenAI; indexed by Google and Bing
BBB Named AI crawlers allowed Readable by all major assistants
Foursquare OpenAI's search crawler allowed; its training crawler and user fetcher blocked Readable by ChatGPT search, plus data licensed to other platforms
Nextdoor Business pages blocked to all major AI crawlers Mainly through Google and Bing, which are allowed
MapQuest OpenAI, Anthropic's main crawler and Perplexity blocked Mainly through Google and Bing

Even closed platforms matter. Google's AI features use Google's index, where these pages rank well, and Copilot uses Bing's. Some data also reaches assistants through licensing deals.

Does Yelp still influence Google search results and LLM recommendations?

Yes. Yelp pages rank prominently in Google for many local searches, and BrightLocal found Yelp was the second most-used source in AI Overviews and AI Mode for local questions and the top source for ChatGPT. A separate analysis by Foundation Marketing and AirOps of late-2025 AI answers found Yelp cited far more than any other local discovery platform. Yelp's robots.txt blocks AI crawlers from business pages, but under a deal reported in July 2026, Yelp licenses its reviews, ratings, photos and business details to OpenAI for local recommendations in ChatGPT. For most local businesses, a complete, accurate Yelp profile with recent reviews remains worth maintaining.

How does Data Axle help a local business appear in ChatGPT recommendations?

Indirectly. Data Axle is one of the main US business data aggregators, alongside Foursquare and Neustar Localeze. Aggregators collect business details and distribute them to directories, apps, navigation systems and search engines. OpenAI has not published which business-data providers ChatGPT's local answers use, apart from licensing deals such as Yelp's. The value is propagation. Correct details submitted to aggregators flow into many of the smaller directories and apps that assistants and search engines read, and replace old errors there. Submit and verify your listing with each major aggregator, either directly or through a listing management service, and check that the corrections appear downstream after a few weeks.

How do local citations from Yelp and Nextdoor appear in AI-recommended answers?

They appear in different ways. Yelp appears as a cited source in Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, and as the data behind many local business descriptions in ChatGPT. Assistants often summarise Yelp review themes, such as punctuality or pricing. Nextdoor recommendations are strong word of mouth, but its business pages are closed to AI crawlers. So they reach AI answers mostly through Google and Bing, where they are indexed. For both, claim the business page and keep details identical to your other listings. On Nextdoor, you can ask customers for a recommendation; on Yelp, do not ask for reviews at all, because Yelp's rules forbid it, but reply to the reviews you already have.

How do you audit and fix NAP data?

  • Search your old details. Search the web for old phone numbers, old addresses and former business names to find stale listings.
  • Check the sources AI cites. Ask assistants for your address, phone and hours, and open every cited page.
  • Watch call tracking numbers. Use your main number as the primary number on listings. Google allows additional numbers on a Business Profile for tracking.
  • Standardise formatting. Choose "Suite 200" or "Ste 200" and use it everywhere.
  • Handle moves carefully. Update every listing, mark the old location as moved, and redirect old location pages.

Consistency beyond NAP, such as services and descriptions, is covered in how to make a brand's information consistent across AI-visible sources.

What might an illustrative case look like?

Consider an illustrative family dental practice that moved across town two years ago and changed its phone number. ChatGPT gives the old address in about a third of answers, and Gemini sometimes says the practice "may have closed". Checks find two Business Profiles, one for each address, an unclaimed Yelp page with the old phone number, and dozens of small directories copying the old details from an aggregator. The practice merges the Business Profiles, claims and corrects Yelp, submits the new details to the three main aggregators and fixes the ten directories that appear in AI answers. Within two months, assistants give the correct address and phone in nearly every answer, and the practice is named more often for "dentist near me" questions in its new neighbourhood.

What do people ask about NAP and AI recommendations?

Do small formatting differences matter?

Rarely. Different phone numbers, addresses or names matter far more than "St" versus "Street".

Should I pay for a listing management service?

It can save time for multi-location businesses. Single-location businesses can usually fix the key listings themselves.

How long do NAP fixes take to show in AI answers?

Core listings update within days to weeks. Aggregator changes can take one to three months to spread.

Can one wrong directory hurt my recommendations?

If it is a directory that assistants cite for your area, yes. Fix those first.
