Can You Add an llms.txt File to the Site Root on Wix?
You usually do not need to add one. Wix generates and maintains an llms.txt file automatically at yourdomain.com/llms.txt, for sites on a paid plan with a custom domain connected. You can view it, edit it, reset it to the automatic version, or switch it off, under SEO & GEO in the site dashboard. Editing it stops automatic updates, so your changes are kept but new pages are no longer added. Wix does not let you upload arbitrary files to the site root, so the built-in file is the practical route. Whether llms.txt helps AI visibility at all is doubtful. Google says it does not use the file, and an Ahrefs study of 2026 server data found 97% of llms.txt files received no requests.
How does llms.txt work on Wix?
| Situation | What happens |
|---|---|
| Paid plan with a custom domain | Wix generates llms.txt automatically and keeps it updated |
| Free plan or no custom domain | Wix says you need to upgrade and connect a domain first |
| You edit the file | Your version is kept, and automatic updates stop |
| You click Reset to Default | The automatic version returns, and updates resume |
| You switch the toggle off | The file is no longer served |
| You want a separate uploaded file at the root | Not supported as a normal file upload |
Where do you find and edit it?
According to Wix's help centre:
- Go to SEO & GEO in your site's dashboard.
- Scroll to Tools and settings and click Go to llms.txt to view the file.
- Click Edit file to change it. Wix warns that once you edit, the file stops updating automatically.
- Click Reset to Default under More Actions if you want automatic updates back.
- Use the toggle to stop serving the file if you prefer not to have one.
Wix says the file only includes content that is already public on your site, and that you can limit what is shared by editing it or turning it off.
Should you edit the automatic file?
In most cases, leave it on automatic. The benefit of Wix's version is that it stays in step with your pages without anyone remembering to update it. Edit it only when you have a clear reason:
- The summary is wrong or vague, for example describing a bakery as a "business website".
- Key pages are missing, such as your main service or pricing pages.
- It lists pages you would rather not point to, such as old campaigns.
If you edit, set a reminder to review the file whenever you add or remove important pages, since Wix will no longer do it for you. How to structure the content is covered in how to write an llms.txt file.
Can you upload your own file to the root instead?
Not as a simple upload. Wix does not give site owners a file manager for the domain root. Before Wix added the built-in file, developers used workarounds, such as a Velo HTTP function that returns text, combined with a redirect from /llms.txt. The Wix App Market also has third-party llms.txt apps. With the native feature and its edit option, those workarounds are rarely worth the maintenance.
Does llms.txt help your Wix site appear in AI answers?
Probably very little. The evidence so far:
- Google does not use it. Google's guide to generative AI features lists special AI text files such as llms.txt among the tactics you can ignore for Google Search.
- Few bots read it. Ahrefs analysed server data for about 38,000 valid llms.txt files in 2026 and found 97% received no requests at all. Most of the requests that did occur came from bots, with OpenAI's training crawler GPTBot the most frequent.
- It is not access control. llms.txt does not allow or block crawlers; robots.txt does. The difference is covered in whether llms.txt is like robots.txt.
Wix presents the file as a way to help AI agents understand your business and find tools, such as MCP connections. That may matter more as agents develop, and since Wix maintains the file for free, there is little cost in leaving it on. The broader evidence is covered in whether llms.txt improves AI search visibility.
What matters more on Wix?
- robots.txt. Check the Robots.txt Editor, also under SEO & GEO, to make sure AI search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot are not blocked.
- Structured data. Add business, service and product markup in SEO Settings.
- Clear pages. A page per service, with prices, areas and FAQs in text.
- AI Visibility Overview. Wix's built-in tool checks how ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity mention your site for generated questions.
- Your Business Profile and reviews, which drive local AI answers far more than any file.
Platform comparisons are in which website builder is best for AEO.
How do you check the file is working?
- Open
yourdomain.com/llms.txtin a browser and check it loads as text, not an error page. - Read it for accuracy: your business name, what you do, and links to the right pages.
- Fetch it with curl using a crawler user agent, to confirm your settings do not block it.
- Recheck after major site changes if you have edited it manually.
We have not audited Wix-generated llms.txt files across many sites. This page is based on Wix's help centre and AI Search Lab articles, and published studies.
What might this look like in practice?
Consider an illustrative physiotherapy practice, Morvmere Physio, on a Wix paid plan. The owner read that llms.txt was essential and spent an afternoon looking for a way to upload one, before finding that Wix already served a file at the domain root. Its summary described the practice accurately, but it did not list the new sports injury clinic page. Rather than edit the file and lose automatic updates, the owner republished the clinic page and confirmed it appeared after the next update. The time saved went into writing FAQs for each treatment page, which was more likely to help in AI answers.
