Do Backlinks Help GEO, and Do Unlinked Mentions Matter Too?

Backlinks still help GEO, but mostly indirectly: they improve search rankings, and search rankings feed the pages AI systems retrieve, especially in Google's AI features. Brand mentions, linked or not, track AI visibility much more closely. In Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions correlated at 0.66–0.71 with how often brands appeared in ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews. Mentions on YouTube correlated even more strongly, at about 0.74, while domain rating correlated at only 0.27 with ChatGPT visibility. Language models learn from text, so a mention in a trusted article shapes what they associate with your brand, whether or not it carries a link. The practical shift is from counting links to earning mentions in the sources that engines read and cite for your category.

How strongly do backlinks and domain authority correlate with AI visibility?

Weakly, compared with mentions. Two Ahrefs studies of 75,000 brands give the clearest picture:

Factor Correlation with AI visibility (Spearman)
YouTube mentions of the brand About 0.74 across ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews
Branded web mentions 0.66–0.71 across the three
Branded anchor text 0.53 for AI Overviews; 0.63 for AI Mode
Branded search volume 0.39 for AI Overviews; 0.35 for ChatGPT; 0.47 for AI Mode
Domain rating 0.27 for ChatGPT
Backlinks 0.22 for AI Overviews
Number of pages on the site About 0.19

These are correlations, not causes. Brands with many mentions also tend to be larger and better known. But the gap between mentions and links is large and consistent across engines. You can see the full Ahrefs analysis.

Do brand mentions matter more than backlinks for AI search visibility?

On the evidence available, yes. The reason lies in how AI systems work:

  • Models learn from text. During training, a language model learns which brands are discussed in connection with which needs. A sentence such as "for small teams, Acme is the simplest option" shapes that association whether or not "Acme" is linked.
  • Retrieval reads content. When an assistant searches and reads pages, it uses what the page says. A link in the page does not tell it anything the sentence around the link does not.
  • Recommendations need corroboration. Engines are more confident naming a brand that several independent sources discuss.

Links still matter for search engines, which use them to discover and rank pages. Since most AI answers retrieve pages through search indexes, links help your own pages get found and ranked. But for whether an engine thinks of you when answering a category question, mentions carry more weight.

Do Google and LLMs treat unlinked brand mentions like implied links?

For language models, the distinction barely exists. They read text, and a brand name in a relevant sentence is information whether it is linked or not.

For Google's ranking systems, there is no public confirmation that unlinked mentions pass value the way links do. Google has discussed "implied links" in a patent, but patents do not show what is used in ranking, and Google has not said mentions count as links. What is clear is that Google's AI features draw on content that discusses brands. Its guidance on generative AI features also warns against pursuing inauthentic mentions, which suggests Google sees mentions as something people might try to game.

Do dofollow or nofollow links affect LLM visibility?

For language models reading a page, no. Link attributes such as nofollow, sponsored and ugc are instructions for search engine ranking systems. An AI assistant reading a news article sees the text that mentions you, and the attribute on the link does not change that. Since 2019, Google has treated nofollow as a hint rather than a strict rule for its own ranking purposes.

Does ChatGPT cite media brand mentions when the links are nofollow?

Yes. ChatGPT cites pages for their content, and many major publishers apply nofollow to all outbound links. A feature in a respected publication that describes your company is useful evidence for AI answers even if the link is nofollow. It can be cited, and it shapes how you are described.

How is off-page SEO for AI different from traditional link building?

Aspect Traditional link building Off-page work for AI visibility
Goal Links that pass ranking value Mentions in sources engines read and cite
Unit of value A followed link from an authoritative domain A relevant, descriptive mention of your brand
Target sites High domain authority sites Sites cited for your category's questions: reviews, comparisons, trade press, communities, video
What matters in the mention Anchor text and link attributes What the text says about you, and whether it is accurate and specific
Formats Articles, resource pages Reviews, comparisons, interviews, podcasts, videos, forum answers, data citations
Measurement Links and referring domains Mentions, the context of mentions, and changes in AI answers

Link building still has a place in a combined programme, especially for Google. The shift is in targeting and in what counts as a win.

How do you build links that improve Google AI Overviews visibility?

Google's AI Overviews retrieve pages from its index, often through several related searches for subtopics. Links help pages rank for those searches. To make link work count for AI Overviews:

  1. Point links at the pages that answer questions, such as guides, comparisons and pricing, not only the home page.
  2. Earn links from relevant, topical sources, which help pages rank for the narrower searches Overviews run.
  3. Create link-worthy assets: original data, tools and clear explanations that others cite.
  4. Make the linked pages worth quoting: answer-first, specific and current.
  5. Avoid link schemes, which breach Google's spam policies and can lower rankings in both classic results and AI features.

Does GEO require off-site optimization as well as website changes?

Usually, yes. Your website can only tell engines what you say about yourself. Recommendations, especially for "best" questions, lean on what independent sources say. A study comparing AI search engines found a systematic bias towards earned media over brand-owned content. So a GEO programme that only edits the website will struggle on competitive recommendation questions.

Can GEO get a brand mentioned in AI answers without changing its content?

Partly. Off-site work alone can increase mentions: reviews, coverage, listings and comparisons can put your brand into answers even if your site stays the same. But there are limits. If your site is blocked to AI crawlers, vague or out of date, engines have little to quote when they describe you. They may also describe you inaccurately. Specific questions, such as pricing, features and service areas, also depend on your own pages. The strongest results come from doing both.

What makes a mention valuable for AI?

  • Relevance: the mention appears in content about your category or the problem you solve.
  • Description: it says what you do, for whom and why, not just your name in a list.
  • Source: the site is one engines read and cite for your topic.
  • Accuracy: facts about you are correct and current.
  • Sentiment: the context is positive or balanced.
  • Consistency: your name and category are stated the same way as elsewhere.
  • Co-occurrence: you are mentioned alongside the category terms and competitors you want to be associated with.

Which mention sources carry the most weight for different businesses?

Business type Mentions that tend to matter most
B2B software Review platforms, comparison articles, analyst notes, trade publications, integration partner pages, YouTube reviews
Professional services Industry publications, association directories, podcasts, speaking pages, client case studies on partner sites
Local services Business listings, review platforms, local press, community and "best in town" articles
Ecommerce brands Product reviews, retailer listings, gift guides and roundups, creator videos, consumer publications
Healthcare and finance Professional registers, specialist publications, reputable comparison sites, regulators' and associations' listings

The pattern is the same everywhere: the sources that matter are the ones engines already cite when answering your buyers' questions. Check before investing.

How do links and mentions work together?

The best off-site wins deliver both. A feature in a relevant publication that describes your company and links to a useful page gives search engines a link. It also gives AI engines a descriptive mention, and it gives readers a reason to visit. When planning outreach, aim for coverage that explains what you do, with a link where the publisher allows it, rather than asking only for a link. Keep the description consistent with your own site. Name, category and main offer should match, so every mention reinforces the same association instead of creating a slightly different version of you.

What does a mentions-first plan look like in practice?

Take a small accounting software company that has spent two years on guest-post link building. It has respectable domain authority but rarely appears when people ask ChatGPT or Perplexity for "accounting software for freelancers in the UK". Its citation check shows that answers draw on three comparison articles, two review platforms, a freelancer community site and a handful of YouTube reviews. It appears in none of them.

The company redirects its budget. It asks existing customers for reviews on the two platforms and sends accurate product information to the comparison authors. It offers a free walkthrough to three YouTube creators who review freelancer tools and publishes an annual survey of freelancer tax deadlines that the press quotes. It also answers questions in the community under staff names. Six months later its link count has barely changed. But it is mentioned in two of the three comparison articles and several videos, and it now appears in most runs of its core questions.

How do you earn mentions without spam?

  1. Map the sources cited for your buyers' questions and find where you are missing.
  2. Offer expertise: commentary for journalists, guest articles for trade publications, podcast appearances.
  3. Publish original data others will quote.
  4. Build review volume on the platforms engines cite.
  5. Participate genuinely in communities where your buyers ask questions, disclosing your affiliation.
  6. Pitch comparison authors with accurate information, not payment.
  7. Avoid manipulation: fake mentions, undisclosed paid placements and mass-produced guest posts breach platform rules and, in the US, FTC disclosure requirements.

Where the third-party sources engines cite are listed and prioritised is covered in which third-party sites brands should use to earn AI citations.

How do you measure mentions?

Track three things: how often your brand is mentioned on the web, where those mentions appear, and whether AI answers change as mentions grow. Monitoring tools and alerts can surface new mentions; a fixed set of AI questions, run monthly, shows whether they are reaching answers. Watch the description as well as the count. If new mentions describe you in a way you do not want, answers will follow them.

A simple mention log works for most teams. Record one row per mention with the date, the site, whether it links, the sentence that describes you, and whether that site appears in your AI citation checks. Over a few months the log shows which kinds of coverage are followed by changes in answers. It also shows which placements looked good but made no difference, so the next quarter's outreach can focus on the sources that actually move answers.

What do people ask about links, mentions and GEO?

Should I stop building backlinks?

No. Links still help pages rank, which matters for Google's AI features and for being retrieved by other engines. Rebalance towards relevant links and mentions rather than stopping.

Does domain authority matter for AI citations?

Less than for rankings. Correlations between domain rating and AI visibility are weak; relevance and mentions matter more. How topical authority compares is covered in whether topical authority matters more than domain authority for GEO.

Are YouTube mentions really that important?

They showed the strongest correlation in Ahrefs' study, and YouTube is heavily cited in AI Overviews. Being discussed in relevant videos is worth pursuing.

Can I buy brand mentions?

Paid placements must be disclosed, and undisclosed or fake mentions breach platform rules and consumer protection law. Disclosed sponsorships can still raise awareness.
