Do Custom GPTs Influence Whether a Business Appears in Public ChatGPT Answers?
No. A Custom GPT's instructions, knowledge files and actions work only inside that GPT. They do not change what ChatGPT tells other people, and nothing in OpenAI's documentation links GPTs to how ChatGPT search chooses sources. Custom GPTs are also on their way out. OpenAI announced on September 11, 2026 that it plans to retire them across ChatGPT plans, with a migration path to plugins; standard retirement is December 11, 2026, and personal accounts can no longer create new GPTs. Public answers about your business depend on ChatGPT search, what the model learned in training, and what other sites say about you.
What does a Custom GPT change, and what does it not?
| Part of a GPT | Effect inside the GPT | Effect on public ChatGPT answers |
|---|---|---|
| Instructions | Shape how that GPT responds | None |
| Knowledge files | Searched when someone uses that GPT | None; they are not part of ChatGPT search |
| Actions | Let the GPT call your API | None |
| Directory listing | Lets people find the GPT in the GPT directory | None; being listed is not being recommended |
| Conversations in the GPT | Stay with that GPT's users | No direct effect on others' answers |
A GPT is a customised wrapper around ChatGPT, used by people who open it deliberately. Someone asking ChatGPT “which accountant in Leeds handles contractor tax?” gets an answer built from ChatGPT search and the model's training, not from any GPT an accountant built. The same applies to Projects and memory, as covered in whether asking AI about your brand every day trains it.
What is happening to Custom GPTs?
| Date | Change |
|---|---|
| Before September 2026 | New GPT creation already unavailable on personal ChatGPT accounts, whatever the subscription |
| September 11, 2026 | OpenAI announces plans to retire Custom GPTs across ChatGPT plans, with migration to plugins |
| September 22, 2026 | Migration available for affected Enterprise workspaces |
| October 26, 2026 | New GPT creation ends for affected Enterprise workspaces |
| December 11, 2026 | Standard retirement date; Enterprise workspaces with an approved deferral get a later date |
OpenAI describes plugins as able to combine reusable instructions with connected apps. When a GPT is migrated, the resulting plugin starts private and its old sharing settings do not carry over, so a GPT offered publicly to customers needs a new plan for access.
Do plugins change public answers?
Plugins replaced ChatGPT's App Directory in July 2026, in a Plugin Directory shared by ChatGPT and Codex. A published plugin can be installed by users, called by name, and sometimes suggested by ChatGPT when a request fits, since OpenAI's guidelines give enhanced distribution to plugins with strong utility and satisfaction. That is a distribution channel for your product, covered in whether ChatGPT can recommend and launch apps.
It is still separate from organic answers. OpenAI's plugin guidelines forbid metadata written to steer the model towards a plugin, and a plugin does not make ChatGPT's own answer name your business when someone asks for a recommendation.
What does influence public ChatGPT answers?
- ChatGPT search access. OAI-SearchBot must be able to crawl your site, and your pages need to be findable in the search indexes ChatGPT uses.
- Your own pages. Clear service, pricing, location and comparison pages give ChatGPT something specific to cite.
- Other sites. Reviews, directories, news coverage and lists that mention you, especially alongside the brands you compete with, as covered in how co-citation and co-occurrence affect AI recommendations.
- Consistent business details across your site, Google Business Profile and directories.
- Product feeds for ecommerce, submitted through OpenAI's merchant programme.
- Training data, which reflects what was widely written about you before a model's cutoff.
The routes OpenAI actually offers for submitting a business are summarised in whether you can submit a business directly to ChatGPT.
Why do people think GPTs help?
Three misunderstandings are common:
- “Uploading our documents teaches ChatGPT about us.” Knowledge files are retrieved inside the GPT only. They do not enter ChatGPT search.
- “The GPT appears in search, so ChatGPT knows us.” A listing in the GPT directory is not a citation in answers.
- “More usage of our GPT trains the model.” Even where conversation data can be used to improve models, that is not a way to insert your business into other people's answers, and it would take a future model and its cutoff to matter at all.
How can you check what ChatGPT says about you?
Test the main assistant, not a GPT you built. Write 20 to 30 questions your customers ask before buying, such as “best bookkeeper for Airbnb hosts in Bristol”, and run them in a logged-out session or an unpersonalized temporary chat so memory does not colour the result. Note whether you are named, which pages are cited, and which competitors appear instead. Repeat monthly, because answers vary between runs. If a competitor is cited from a page type you lack, such as a pricing page or a local guide, that is the gap to fill. Checking your server logs for OAI-SearchBot visits also confirms that ChatGPT search can reach you at all.
Should you still build or keep a GPT?
Only as a customer tool, and with the retirement in mind. A GPT that helped customers choose a product or configure an order may still be useful until December, but plan its replacement: a plugin if you need ChatGPT distribution, or a tool on your own website that you control. If you built a GPT mainly for visibility, retire it and put the effort into your site and third-party coverage.
Before it stops working:
- Decide whether to migrate. Migration is offered from the My GPTs page when available for your account.
- Plan access. Migrated plugins start private, so customers who used a shared GPT link will lose access unless you publish or share the replacement.
- Update links on your website and emails that point to the GPT.
- Move any unique content from the GPT's instructions or files onto your public pages, where ChatGPT search can find it.
We have not tested whether GPTs affected answers in any measurable way. This page is based on OpenAI's help centre, release notes and plugin documentation.
What might this look like in practice?
Consider an illustrative home insurance broker, Keelwater Cover, that built a public GPT in 2024 to answer policy questions, hoping it would lead ChatGPT to recommend the firm. Two years later, ChatGPT still named three national brokers for “best home insurance broker for listed buildings” and never Keelwater. After OpenAI's retirement notice, the team moved the GPT's best answers onto a listed-buildings guide on its own site, earned a mention in a heritage property magazine, and allowed OAI-SearchBot, which a firewall rule had been blocking. Within two months ChatGPT's answers began citing the guide.
What do people ask about Custom GPTs and ChatGPT visibility?
Will ChatGPT recommend my business if I build a GPT about it?
No. GPTs do not affect the answers ChatGPT gives to other users.
When do Custom GPTs stop working?
OpenAI's standard retirement date is December 11, 2026, with later dates for Enterprise workspaces that have an approved deferral.
Can I still create a Custom GPT?
Not on personal accounts. Creation also ends for affected Enterprise workspaces in October 2026.
Are plugins a better route to visibility?
They are a distribution channel for products people choose to use, not a way to change ChatGPT's organic recommendations.
