Free Merchant Center AI Insights vs Paid Ecommerce AI Monitoring Platforms
Google Merchant Center's free AI performance insights report shows how your products appear in AI Mode, AI Overviews and the Gemini app for shopping-intent conversational queries: your share of voice against your Merchant Center competitors, performance by shopping stage, and the terms, attributes and intents shoppers prioritise. It does not cover ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude or Amazon's shopping assistant, and it reports impression-based metrics. Paid platforms fill those gaps: Peec AI's SKU-level shopping analytics on ChatGPT, Goodie's commerce suite across several assistants, Evertune's ChatGPT shopping data, Azoma for Amazon, and Kovmere, which is our product, for brand-level buyer questions on five engines.
What does Merchant Center's AI performance insights report show?
Google began piloting the report with selected US Merchant Center accounts in July 2026. Its help page now lists it for English-language queries in Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand and the United States, under an "AI performance" tab. It includes:
- Share of voice: your AI impressions divided by the total for you and your Merchant Center competitors on related queries.
- Competitors' average share: whether you are above or below your competitor set.
- Shopping stages: queries classified into three stages, starting with discovery and evaluation, each with its own share of voice.
- Search types: such as searching by category, researching specifications or looking for reviews.
- Top terms, popular attributes and search intents: what shoppers prioritise, such as "maximum cushioning", and how many of your products appear for each.
Google's own advice from the report is to add the relevant terms to product titles and descriptions and fill in missing attributes.
What are its limits?
- Google only. AI Mode, AI Overviews and the Gemini app; no ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude or Amazon.
- Fixed competitors. The competitor set comes from Merchant Center and cannot be changed; with no competitors defined, share of voice shows 100%.
- Thin data for small stores. With too few impressions, share of voice shows as zero.
- Impressions, not answers. The help page describes impression-based metrics rather than the text of the answers or the sources cited alongside your products.
- Limited countries and English only for now.
For a store selling mainly through Google Shopping, it is a strong free starting point. For a store whose customers also ask ChatGPT or shop on Amazon, it shows only part of the picture.
How should you act on the report?
Start with the stage where your share of voice is lowest against competitors. Open the top terms and popular attributes for that stage and compare them with your product titles, descriptions and attribute fields. If shoppers prioritise "waterproof" or "machine washable" and your feed leaves the attribute blank, fill it in where it is true. Only add terms that describe the product accurately; stuffing titles with every popular term makes listings harder to read and can break Merchant Center's product data rules. Then wait a few weeks and compare the same stage again, since changes take time to show in AI surfaces.

Which option fits which store?
You sell mainly through Google Shopping: start with Merchant Center's free report and act on its terms and attributes advice.
You want product-level data on ChatGPT shopping: Peec AI's Shopping Analytics or Evertune's Shopping Intelligence.
You need several shopping assistants, including Amazon's, with feed fixes: Goodie's commerce suite on its Pro plan.
You sell heavily on Amazon: Azoma, for Rufus share of voice by ASIN.
You want to know which brands and sources AI answers favour in your category before investing in product-level tools: Kovmere. It asks up to 20 buyer questions such as "best trail running shoes for wide feet", three times on each of five engines, shows which brands are named and which review sites, retailers and brand pages are cited, labels the most-cited pages by whether they mention you, and drafts fixes such as a buying guide or comparison table from facts on your site. It works at brand level and does not track SKUs, ChatGPT product cards or Amazon.
How should you combine free and paid tools?
- Turn on Merchant Center's report if you are eligible, and fix the terms and attributes it highlights.
- Check your category on other engines, by hand or with a brand-level reading, to see which brands and sources dominate outside Google.
- Add a product-level tool only if the brand-level picture shows that individual products, prices or retailers are the problem.
- Keep your product feeds accurate for every channel you use; Merchant Center automatic item updates can fix occasional price and availability mismatches, and OpenAI accepts product feeds from merchants who apply.
What might the combination show?
Take an illustrative running shoe brand. Merchant Center's report shows a low share of voice in the evaluation stage, with "wide toe box" and "arch support" among top terms its titles lack. A brand-level reading across five engines shows ChatGPT and Perplexity naming three competitors for wide-foot questions, citing two running review sites that have not reviewed the brand's wide models. The brand updates product titles and attributes for Google, sends samples to the review sites, and publishes a fit guide. A product-level tool can wait until those changes are measured.
What are Kovmere's limits for ecommerce?
Kovmere does not connect to Merchant Center, Shopify or Amazon, does not track SKUs, prices or product cards, and does not cover AI Mode, Copilot or Amazon's assistant. It measures one US market per site with up to 20 questions, through engine APIs rather than consumer apps. No tool can guarantee that products will be recommended.

What do people ask about Merchant Center AI insights?
Is Merchant Center's AI performance report free?
Yes, for eligible Merchant Center accounts in the listed countries.
Does it show ChatGPT data?
No. It covers Google's own AI surfaces, AI Mode, AI Overviews and the Gemini app, not ChatGPT.
Why does my share of voice show 100%?
Your account has no defined competitors in Merchant Center, so there is nothing to compare against.
When should a store pay for an ecommerce AI monitoring platform?
When your customers shop through ChatGPT, Perplexity or Amazon as well as Google, or when you need SKU-level data the free report does not give.
