Goodie vs Profound for Finding Competitors Recommended in Commercial AI Answers

Profound is the stronger tool for discovering competitors you did not know about. It defines competitors by who wins citations in AI answers to your tracked prompts, and surfaces unexpected challengers through include and exclude lists. It ranks you among all cited brands and watches competitor pages for changes. It is sold on custom Enterprise plans after a free trial. Goodie is the more accessible tool for benchmarking known rivals across buying questions and shopping surfaces. It costs $399 a month for 120 prompts run daily on five engines, with SKU-level competitor products and merchants on its $999 Pro plan. In both, the prompts you choose decide which competitors you find, so commercial questions need careful design.

Why do you need to discover competitors, not just track them?

Because AI answers to buying questions often recommend businesses you would not list as rivals. Ask an assistant for "the best invoicing software for freelancers" and the answer may include a bank's free tool, a marketplace's built-in billing, or a newer product that has barely shown up in search. A tracker that only counts the five competitors you entered will report a healthy share of voice while an unlisted brand takes the top recommendation.

Profound addresses this directly. Its competitor pages say it defines competitors by who is getting citations in AI answers for your tracked prompts, and that its include and exclude settings surface unexpected challengers. Its visibility rank places you among all cited brands, not only the ones you chose. Goodie's pages describe benchmarking against competitors and finding prompts where other brands are mentioned instead of you. We did not find a description of automatic discovery of unlisted brands, so ask in a trial whether it shows every brand named in an answer. Why AI recommends rivals even for questions naming your own brand is covered in why AI recommends competitors for brand-specific questions.

What does Profound show about a competitor's recommendations?

Once a competitor is identified, Profound breaks its lead down:

  • Prompt-level insights: the exact queries where competitors outrank you, compared prompt by prompt with your domain.
  • Competitive citation analysis: which domain types control citations for key prompts, and whether your pages outperform the competitor's.
  • Head-to-head content comparison: your page against the competitor page that wins citations for a given prompt, with recommendations on answerability and structure.
  • Change monitoring: competitor pages tracked against historical baselines, with alerts and AI-generated gap analysis in Slack when their citation performance shifts.

Profound runs tracked prompts daily and says it collects answers from the consumer versions of each assistant. More on how it turns findings into content is in Profound vs Scrunch.

What does Goodie show?

Goodie measures citation frequency, ranking position, sentiment and share of voice against competitors, daily, across five engines on Core. You can save watchlists of competitor and category prompts, set which pages count toward your visibility score, and ask the Goodie Agent questions such as which competitor gained most on comparison prompts this month. Its reports include country and location analytics and historical trends.

For retailers and brands selling products, Goodie's Pro plan adds SKU-level agentic commerce visibility. It shows which competitor products and merchants appear in shopping answers across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode Shopping, Amazon Rufus and Perplexity Shopping, and whether prices mentioned are accurate. That is where many commercial recommendations now happen. Profound goes deeper on one surface: for ChatGPT shopping responses it shows SKU-level data, merchant share and the product queries that return competitors but not you. Goodie covers more surfaces; Profound covers ChatGPT in more detail. More on Goodie's tracking is in the Goodie review.

How should commercial prompts be designed to find competitors?

The competitors you find depend on the questions you ask. A useful commercial set includes:

  1. Category-best questions: "best CRM for small law firms," "top-rated running shoes for flat feet."
  2. Use-case questions: "software to manage subcontractor invoices," written the way a buyer describes the problem.
  3. Comparison questions: "X vs Y," where X is you and Y is a known rival, and pairs of rivals without you.
  4. Alternatives questions: "alternatives to [leading competitor]," which often reveal challengers.
  5. Constraint questions: price limits, integrations, locations or compliance needs that narrow the field.
  6. Branded questions such as "is [your brand] good for enterprise?", to see which rivals the answer suggests instead.

Record every brand named, its position, and whether the answer recommends it or merely mentions it, since "avoid X for large teams" is not a recommendation. Checking that distinction at scale is covered in human evaluation vs LLM-as-a-judge.

What does each cost?

  • Goodie: Core at $399 a month covers 120 prompts on five engines daily, about 18,000 answers a month, or about 2.2 cents each. Pro at $999 adds three engines, 250 prompts and SKU-level commerce data. Enterprise, priced on request, tracks up to 13 models and 500+ prompts and adds API access. A seven-day free trial is available on Core.
  • Profound: since mid-September 2026, brand plans are a free trial followed by a custom Enterprise quote; the trial runs recommended prompts for seven days on ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews.

For a team that already knows its main rivals and wants daily benchmarking at a published price, Goodie is easier to start. For a team that suspects it is losing to brands it has not identified, Profound's discovery is the reason to take a demo.

Where does each fall short?

  • Profound: no published brand price; the trial's prompts are recommended and not customisable, so it may not test your own commercial questions.
  • Goodie: automatic discovery of unlisted competitors is not described on the pages we read; export and API access sit on higher plans.
  • Both: a recommendation in one run is not a pattern; judge competitors over weeks.

We have not run either tool on a live category; this comparison uses the vendors' product, pricing and help pages.

What might this look like in practice?

Consider an illustrative maker of standing desks, Brennane. It set up Goodie Pro with its four known rivals and 200 commercial prompts. Shopping data showed a marketplace's own-brand desk appearing in more ChatGPT shopping answers than any named rival, at a lower price. A Profound demo on the same category surfaced a second surprise: a small ergonomic furniture brand winning citations on "best desk for back pain" prompts, driven by one physiotherapy site's buying guide. Brennane added both brands to its competitor set, pitched the physiotherapy site with its own ergonomic data, and adjusted its product pages to answer back-pain questions directly.
