Google Business Profile Edits vs Website Edits for Wrong AI Overview Business Facts

Edit both, but start with the source the wrong answer depends on. For structured facts such as hours, holiday hours, address, phone and accessibility features, your Google Business Profile is the record that Google's local results, Maps and Gemini read directly. It also feeds the AI summaries Google is now testing in local panels. For detail, and for everything outside Google, your website matters more. AI Overviews cite web pages, and ChatGPT and Perplexity have no direct access to your profile. Conflicts between the two are a common cause of wrong answers, because each system may pick a different version. Below is which to fix first for hours, doctors' details, appointment availability and accessibility.

Which source does an AI Overview use for business facts?

Several at once. Google's systems can draw on your Business Profile, your website, reviews and third-party pages. Google says information on Business Profiles itself can come from the business, from users who suggest edits, and from other sources such as licensed data. In September 2026, Search Engine Roundtable reported Google testing AI Overviews inside local panels, with descriptions written from the profile, the website and other sources, including outdated website content. Gemini, meanwhile, retrieves places, reviews, addresses and opening hours from Google Maps data.

The practical rule: Google's own local surfaces lean on the profile; AI Overviews for broader questions cite web pages; other assistants rely on your website and directories.

What should you edit first?

Wrong fact Fix first Then
Regular or holiday hours Business Profile hours and special hours Website hours page and any banners; Bing Places, Apple Business, Yelp
Address or phone Business Profile Website footer and contact page; directories and data aggregators
Services or specialities Website service pages Profile services and categories
Prices Website Profile products or services, if listed
Accessibility Business Profile attributes Website accessibility page with detail
Practitioner details Official registries, such as NPPES in the US Profile, practice website, health directories

After editing, search for other pages that still carry the old fact, such as old press releases, directory listings and PDFs, because an AI Overview may cite any of them. How AI Overviews end up stating wrong details is covered in why AI Overviews get prices, competitors and business details wrong.

Google Business Profile vs website holiday hours when AI gives the wrong answer

Set the holiday hours in your Business Profile first. Google's help page describes Special hours, under Edit profile and Hours, for days when your business temporarily changes its hours, such as holidays or events. That is the structured record Google's local results and Maps use. Then:

  • Update your website with the same hours, stated with dates, such as "Closed 25–26 December; open 10:00–16:00 on 27 December".
  • Remove last year's holiday banner and old announcement pages, which assistants may still read.
  • Update Bing Places and Apple Business, which feed Copilot and Siri, and Yelp, which feeds several other assistants.
  • Set holiday hours early, a few weeks before the date, so crawlers and systems have time to pick them up.

If the AI Overview still shows the wrong hours after your profile is updated, check whether it is citing a web page, and fix that page too.

CMS provider data vs Google Business Profile in AI doctor answers

For clinicians in the US, the official record behind many directories is the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System, run for CMS, which holds each provider's NPI details. CMS says covered providers must update their NPPES information, including address changes, within 30 days. Health directories and data providers draw on this and other sources, and AI answers about doctors often cite those directories. So an out-of-date NPPES address can reappear in AI answers even after you fix your website.

Fix the chain in order:

  1. Update NPPES and any payer or Medicare enrolment records.
  2. Update the practice's Business Profile, and individual practitioner profiles where you use them.
  3. Update the practice website, with each clinician's current locations, specialties and accepted insurance.
  4. Correct the main health directories that appear in answers for your specialty.

The profile controls how Google shows the practice; the registry and directories control much of what other assistants and aggregators repeat.

Google Business Profile versus booking pages for showing appointment availability changes to AI

Neither makes an AI Overview show live availability. AI summaries are not built to report today's open slots, and booking widgets that load by script are hard for crawlers to read. What each can do:

  • Business Profile: add your booking link so people can go straight to real-time availability. Google's AI Mode has added agentic booking for local services, pulling current pricing and availability from booking partners, which works only through supported integrations.
  • Website: state availability patterns in text, such as "same-day appointments usually available on weekdays" or "new patients: two to three weeks' wait", and keep them honest.
  • Booking platforms: keep your listing current on the platforms your sector uses, since those are the systems assistants can connect to.

If AI answers say you are "not accepting new patients" or "fully booked" when you are not, the source is usually an old page or directory entry. Find it and update it.

Google Business Profile versus an accessibility page: which source do AI assistants use for accessible venue information?

Both, for different parts of the answer. Google's accessibility attributes cover whether your entrance, toilets, seating, parking and lift are wheelchair accessible. Those yes-or-no facts are what Google's local results and Gemini can read reliably, so set them first. An accessibility page on your website adds the detail that questions often need: step-free routes, door widths, hearing loops, quiet hours, assistance dogs, and how to arrange help. Perplexity, Copilot and ChatGPT have no direct access to your Google attributes. ChatGPT sometimes cites Google Maps links for local questions, but its business cards draw on Yelp and other providers, so for these assistants the website page, and directories that carry accessibility information, are the main source. Keep both consistent, and describe features precisely rather than calling the venue "fully accessible".

How do you report a wrong AI Overview?

Use the feedback option on the AI Overview and describe the specific error. Fix the underlying sources first, since feedback without a corrected source rarely helps for long. If the wrong fact is on your profile because a user suggested an edit, review and correct it in the profile. If it is on a third-party page, ask that site to correct it. The difference between asking for corrections and asking for removal is covered in correction requests vs takedown requests for inaccurate pages.

How long do corrections take?

Profile edits often appear within days, though some are reviewed first. Website changes wait for recrawling; submitting the page in Search Console can speed that up. AI Overviews update as their sources do, but pages cited heavily elsewhere, and directories that copy data on their own schedule, can keep old facts alive for weeks. Check your key facts in AI answers weekly until they are right, then monthly.

What might this look like in practice?

Consider an illustrative dental practice, Ilvstead Dental, whose AI Overview said it was open on Boxing Day. Its Business Profile had no special hours, and a 2024 news post on its website said "open throughout the holidays". The practice added special hours for the holiday period in its profile, deleted the old post, published this year's hours on its contact page, and updated Bing Places and its dental directory listing. Within a week, Google's local panel showed the correct hours, and the AI Overview stopped citing the old post.

What do people ask about fixing wrong business facts in AI Overviews?

Should I edit my Google Business Profile or my website first?

For hours, address, phone and accessibility features, the profile first; for services, prices and detail, the website first. Then make them match.

Does ChatGPT use my Google Business Profile?

Not directly. ChatGPT has no announced access to your profile, though Google Maps links often appear among its citations for local "best of" questions (Muck Rack, May 2026). It relies mainly on your website, Yelp's licensed data and other directories, so keep all of them consistent.

Why does the AI Overview still show old information?

It may be citing an old web page or directory entry. Find the cited source and correct it.

Can I edit an AI Overview directly?

No. You can only fix the sources it uses and send feedback.
