How Can I Check Whether My Business Appears in DuckDuckGo AI Answers?

To check whether your business appears in DuckDuckGo's AI answers, search DuckDuckGo for the questions your customers ask, with Search Assist set to appear "often". Record whether an AI answer appears, whether it names your business, and which one or two sources it cites. Search Assist is DuckDuckGo's optional AI answer feature. It generates a short answer from web content and always links to its sources. Users choose how often they see it, from often to never, so your test settings matter. DuckDuckGo's traditional links come largely from Bing, alongside its own crawler, DuckDuckBot, and specialist sources such as Wikipedia. So being well indexed in Bing and allowing both DuckDuckBot and DuckAssistBot are the foundations. Duck.ai, DuckDuckGo's separate chat service, uses third-party models and needs its own checks.

How does DuckDuckGo produce AI answers?

According to DuckDuckGo's help pages:

  • Search Assist is an optional feature that anonymously generates answers to search queries by scanning the web for relevant content.
  • Answers always link to one or two sources, showing where the answer came from.
  • Users can set how often Search Assist appears: often, sometimes (the default), on-demand or never.
  • Duck.ai is a separate private chat service, reachable from Search Assist for follow-up questions, that supports models from OpenAI, Anthropic and others.
  • DuckDuckGo's traditional links are largely sourced from Bing, with its own crawler, DuckDuckBot, and many indexes and specialist sources supporting its results.
  • Search Assist fetches pages in real time with a separate crawler, DuckAssistBot. Blocking it in robots.txt keeps your pages out of AI answers without affecting regular results.

How do you test it reliably?

  1. Open DuckDuckGo in a private window, or set Search Assist to "often" in Search Settings so answers appear whenever available.
  2. Search your buyers' questions, such as "best [service] in [town]", "[product type] for [use]" or "[your brand] reviews".
  3. Record whether an AI answer appears for each question. With the default setting, many searches will show none.
  4. Record the business names and the sources cited. With only one or two sources per answer, being the cited source matters a lot.
  5. Repeat the searches a few times and on different days, since answers can change.
  6. Test Duck.ai separately with the same questions if your audience uses it, and note which model was selected.

What should you record?

Field Example
Question "Emergency plumber in Leeds open now"
Search Assist setting Often
AI answer shown? Yes
Businesses named Two competitors
Sources cited A local directory page; a competitor's site
Your regular ranking Position 6 in the links below
Notes Answer used the directory's opening hours

Comparing the cited sources with the regular links shows whether you are missing from the index, ranked too low, or simply not the page that best answers the question. If a directory is cited for most local questions, fixing your listing there may do more than any change to your own site.

What should you fix if you are missing?

  1. Check Bing indexing in Bing Webmaster Tools and fix any excluded pages, since DuckDuckGo relies heavily on Bing for links.
  2. Allow DuckDuckBot in robots.txt and at your CDN.
  3. Answer questions directly at the top of relevant pages, since Search Assist draws a brief answer from one or two sources.
  4. Keep facts current and consistent, especially hours, prices and services, across your site and directories.
  5. Be present on the specialist sources DuckDuckGo uses for certain answers, such as Wikipedia where your organisation is notable, and the directories cited for your category.
  6. Keep map listings accurate. DuckDuckGo's maps are built on Apple Maps, so your Apple Business listing matters for local results.

How much should DuckDuckGo matter in your plans?

DuckDuckGo's share of search is small compared with Google, but its users are often privacy-conscious and in some markets and demographics it is used more than average. Because it relies heavily on Bing, work that improves your Bing visibility also helps DuckDuckGo and Microsoft Copilot. A quarterly check of your main questions is usually enough unless your audience is known to favour it.

What do people ask about DuckDuckGo AI answers?

Can I submit my site to DuckDuckGo?

DuckDuckGo does not offer a general submission tool. Get indexed in Bing and allow DuckDuckBot.

Why do I not see an AI answer for my searches?

Search Assist appears only on some searches, depending on the query and the user's frequency setting. Set it to "often" when testing.

Does Duck.ai use my website?

Duck.ai uses third-party models and may draw on web information depending on the model and features. Test it with your questions directly.

Is DuckDuckGo's AI answer the same as Bing Copilot's?

No. They are different systems. DuckDuckGo's regular links come largely from Bing, but Search Assist fetches pages with DuckDuckGo's own DuckAssistBot, so a page can appear in one and not the other.
