How Can I Optimize for AEO Alongside SEO?

To optimize for AEO alongside SEO, add answer-focused steps to the SEO process you already run instead of starting a separate programme. Research questions as well as keywords. Put a direct answer at the top of each page, and cover the follow-up questions people ask. Allow AI crawlers, add AI citations to your reporting, and build the third-party mentions that answer engines rely on. Most of the work is shared: pages that rank well and answer clearly serve both. Start with pages that already rank for question-style searches, because improving their answers is the fastest win in both channels.

Where does AEO plug into an existing SEO process?

SEO step you already do What to add for AEO
Keyword research Collect the full questions behind each keyword, from sales calls, support tickets, "People also ask" and on-site search
Content briefs A drafted direct answer, the follow-up questions, and the facts only you can provide
On-page optimization Answer in the first paragraph; question-style headings where natural; key facts in plain sentences
Technical SEO Check AI crawler access in robots.txt and the CDN; make sure content is in the server-rendered HTML
Structured data Keep markup accurate and matching visible content; add Organization and Product markup where relevant
Link building and digital PR Aim for mentions in the reviews, lists and publications AI answers cite for your category
Local SEO Keep Apple Business, Bing Places and review platforms as accurate as Google Business Profile
Reporting Add AI citations for a fixed question set, the Generative AI report in Search Console and Bing's AI Performance report

Nothing in the SEO column is dropped. AEO changes how each step is done more than it adds new steps. The concepts behind the three terms are explained in the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO.

How should answer engine optimization fit into an SEO roadmap?

Treat AEO as a set of workstreams inside the SEO roadmap, sequenced so each quarter builds on the last:

Quarter Focus Deliverables
1 Baseline and access A question set of 30–50 buyer questions; baseline AI citations across the main engines; crawler access fixed; top 20 pages audited for direct answers
2 Upgrade existing pages Rewrite openings and headings on pages ranking for question searches; add missing follow-up answers; refresh outdated facts
3 Off-site and consistency Correct listings and profiles; target the third-party sources cited for your questions; review collection
4 Gaps and new content New pages for questions nobody on your site answers; original data or guides; rerun the question set and compare with the baseline

Prioritise within each quarter by overlap. Pages that already rank for question searches are closest to being cited in AI Overviews, since Overviews draw on Google's index, including pages that rank for the narrower related searches Google runs. Questions where competitors are recommended and you are not come next.

What changes in a content brief?

Add these fields to your standard SEO brief:

  1. Primary question, worded as a buyer would ask it, not as a keyword.
  2. Draft direct answer: two to four sentences the writer must refine, not replace.
  3. Follow-up questions: the three to six questions people ask next, each needing a clear section.
  4. Unique information: data, experience, examples or prices only your business can provide.
  5. Entities to name clearly: your brand, products, locations and people, spelled consistently.
  6. Claims needing sources: figures that must be checked and dated.
  7. Where it will be tested: the engines and questions used to check the page after publication.

The brief keeps the usual SEO fields: target keyword, search intent, internal links and competitor pages.

What does an upgraded page look like?

Take a builder's page on loft conversion costs that ranks on page one but is rarely cited. Its opening paragraph before the upgrade:

"Thinking about a loft conversion? At Smith & Co, we've been transforming homes for over 20 years. Every project is unique, and costs depend on many factors. Read on to find out more about what affects the price of your dream loft."

After the upgrade:

"A loft conversion in our area typically costs £35,000–£60,000 for a dormer and £25,000–£40,000 for a Velux conversion, based on the projects we completed in 2025 and 2026. The main factors are the conversion type, roof structure, stair position and whether you add a bathroom. Most projects take eight to twelve weeks."

The second version gives Google a better snippet, gives AI engines a quotable answer, and gives readers what they came for. The rest of the page then covers each factor under its own question heading, with examples. That single rewrite is AEO and SEO at the same time.

Where do AEO and SEO pull in different directions?

Tension What to do
A complete answer at the top may reduce clicks Answer fully anyway; give readers reasons to continue, such as calculators, examples, quotes and booking
SEO habits of separate pages for keyword variants Consolidate into one page per question; engines pick the clearest source
Long introductions written for dwell time Cut them; put the answer first
FAQ markup no longer produces rich results in Google (since May 2026) Keep useful FAQ sections for their content; do not rely on the markup
Gated guides for lead capture Keep the key answers public; gate only the extended material
Title tags written for clicks Keep them accurate; exaggerated titles do not help AI answers

In most cases the AEO choice is also the better long-term SEO choice, because it matches what Google's own guidance asks for: helpful content that answers the searcher's question.

How do you report SEO and AEO together?

Use one report with three layers:

  • Visibility: Google rankings and clicks, plus AI citations and mentions for your question set, and impressions in Google's Generative AI performance report.
  • Traffic: organic sessions plus referrals from AI assistants, tracked in analytics.
  • Outcomes: leads, sales and bookings from both, and "how did you hear about us" answers that mention AI tools.

Reporting them together stops teams from treating a fall in clicks as failure when AI visibility and leads are rising. Attributing gains to one or the other is harder, as explained in how to tell whether AI visibility gains came from SEO or AEO.

What should you avoid?

  • Separate "AEO pages" that duplicate existing SEO pages with Q&A formatting.
  • Rewriting every page as a list of questions, which makes pages harder to read and adds little.
  • Buying tools before defining the question set; tools measure what you give them.
  • Chasing hacks, such as hidden text aimed at AI crawlers or invented mentions, which engines treat as spam.
  • Splitting ownership so that SEO and AEO teams edit the same pages with conflicting goals.

What do people ask about AEO alongside SEO?

How much extra time does AEO add to SEO work?

Mostly a little per page: drafting the direct answer, adding follow-up sections and testing afterwards. Off-site work and measurement add more, depending on how many engines and questions you track.

Should AEO have its own budget?

Usually it comes from the SEO budget, with a small addition for tracking and off-site work. See whether AEO should have its own budget line.

Which pages should I upgrade first?

Pages that rank on Google's first page for question searches, followed by pages for questions where competitors are recommended instead of you.

Can the same writer handle SEO and AEO?

Yes. A good SEO writer needs a brief with the extra fields above and a habit of answering first.
