How Do AI Mode Tracking Tools Work, and How Can You Monitor AI Mode Efficiently?

AI Mode tracking tools send your keywords or prompts to Google's AI Mode from a chosen location and device, usually signed out. They then parse the answer: whether your brand is mentioned, which links are cited and in what order, and which competitors appear. Because answers vary between runs and can be personalised for signed-in users, the numbers are samples, not rankings in the classic sense. The efficient way to monitor AI Mode combines three sources. The first is Search Console's free generative AI report. The second is a tracker on a focused set of prompts, checked weekly or daily. The third is an occasional manual check of the answers that matter most.

How do AI Mode trackers work?

Most follow the same steps:

  1. Submit the query to Google Search with AI Mode switched on. AI Mode has its own search mode, reachable through a URL parameter (udm=50), which trackers can use to request it directly.
  2. Set the context: country, city or postcode, language and device type, desktop or mobile.
  3. Collect the answer as a user would see it: the text, the source links shown alongside it, and any product or local results.
  4. Parse it: find mentions of your brand and competitors, list cited URLs, and record the order in which links appear.
  5. Store and compare over time, usually daily or weekly.

Some tools also record which organic results appear for the same query, so you can compare AI Mode citations with rankings.

What do the numbers mean?

"Ranking" in AI Mode is different from ranking in search results. The metrics trackers report are:

  • Presence: whether your domain is cited, or your brand named, in the answer.
  • Citation position: where your link appears among the cited sources. Earlier links are more visible, but there is no fixed page of ten results.
  • Mention rate: the share of tracked queries, or runs, where you appear.
  • Share of citations: your links as a share of all cited links across the tracked set.
  • Average position: the average citation position when you appear. Some tools report it, such as SE Ranking, which tracks the average position of your links in AI Mode answers.

Two cautions apply. AI Mode fans a question out into many related searches, so small wording changes can produce different sources. And signed-in users can receive personalised answers. Google's help centre explains how AI Mode personalises responses and how users can opt in or out. Trackers usually query signed out, so they measure a baseline, not every user's experience.

How to track rankings in Google AI Mode

  1. Choose 30 to 100 queries that matter commercially, written as people ask them in AI Mode. Those are often longer and more conversational than keywords.
  2. Track presence and citation position, not only mentions. A citation earns a link, and a mention without a link does not.
  3. Record which URL is cited. If AI Mode cites a different page from the one you want, check its canonical and content, and consider whether another page answers better.
  4. Compare with organic rankings for the same queries, to see where you are cited without ranking, or ranking without being cited.
  5. Check trends over weeks. A single day's position moves for no lasting reason.
  6. Group queries by topic, so you can see which subjects AI Mode trusts you on.

Which rank trackers support Google AI Mode desktop and mobile results?

Support has spread quickly, and device options vary. As described by the vendors:

Tool AI Mode support Devices and locations
Advanced Web Ranking AI Mode tracking in its rank tracker Desktop and mobile searches
Semrush AI Mode as a search engine in Position Tracking, plus AI Mode in the AI Visibility Toolkit At launch in 2025: US only, desktop only, with city, state or ZIP targeting; check current limits
SE Ranking Dedicated AI Mode tracker with sources, average link position and competitors Multiple countries and languages; compares AI Mode with AI Overviews and organic results
Ahrefs Brand Radar AI Mode in its prompt database and custom prompts Check device options
ZipTie AI Mode as one of its engines Check device options
Peec AI, Moz, Otterly AI Mode as a core model (Peec, Moz) or paid add-on (Otterly) Check device options

If mobile matters, and for many consumer searches it does, confirm before buying that the tool can track mobile AI Mode results in your target locations. AI Mode layouts and source panels differ by device, so desktop data is not a perfect proxy.

How can you monitor AI Mode efficiently?

A low-effort routine for most teams:

  • Monthly: Search Console. The generative AI performance report shows impressions of your pages in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country and device, at no cost. Use it to see which pages Google's AI features already use.
  • Weekly: a tracker on a focused set. Track 30 to 50 high-value queries in AI Mode, grouped by topic. Weekly is enough for most sites. Daily makes sense only when you are actively changing pages and want to see effects.
  • Monthly: manual spot checks. Run five important queries yourself, signed out, on desktop and mobile, and read the full answers. Tools summarise; reading shows you how you are described.
  • Quarterly: review the query set. Replace queries that never change or never matter.

How often to track is covered in more depth in whether to track AI visibility weekly or monthly. How to cover several assistants without checking each by hand is covered in how to track AI visibility without manually checking every model.

What affects AI Mode results that trackers may miss?

  • Follow-up questions. AI Mode is conversational, but trackers usually record the first answer only.
  • Personalisation for signed-in users, as above.
  • Location precision. Local queries can change between neighbourhoods, so city-level tracking may not match a customer's experience.
  • Timing. Answers change as Google updates its systems and as sources change.

What might an efficient setup look like?

Consider an illustrative home insurance comparison site. It tracked 40 AI Mode queries weekly on mobile and desktop in its two main markets, using an existing rank tracker's AI Mode option. Once a month, it compared those results with Search Console's generative AI report, which showed that its AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions, combined, were concentrated on six guides. Its tracker showed AI Mode citing a competitor's pages for questions about flood cover. The site rewrote its flood cover guide with clearer answers and current policy limits. Six weeks later, AI Mode cited the guide in most weekly checks for those queries, and Search Console showed rising AI impressions for the page.

What do people ask about AI Mode tracking?

Does Search Console separate AI Mode from AI Overviews?

The generative AI report combines AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions, broken down by page, country, device and date only. To see AI Mode on its own, you need a tracker or manual checks.

Can I track AI Mode for free?

Search Console's report is free, and manual checks cost only time. Merchants in the US, Canada, Australia, India and New Zealand also get free brand-level AI Mode visibility data in Merchant Center's AI performance insights. For prompt-level automated tracking, budget for a paid tool.

Why do my results differ from a colleague's?

Location, device, sign-in state and timing all change AI Mode answers.

How many queries should I track?

For most sites, 30 to 100 well-chosen queries give a useful picture. More is only better if someone will act on the results.
