How Does a Wrong G2 Category Affect How AI Describes a Product?

A wrong G2 category changes how AI describes a product in three ways. It decides which "best [category] software" lists and alternatives pages the product appears on. It decides which competitors it is compared with. And it supplies the words used to describe it. AI answers often cite G2's category, comparison and alternatives pages, so a product filed under "survey software" instead of "lead generation software" gets described, compared and recommended as a survey tool. It can be missing from the answers where buyers are looking for it, and appear in answers for buyers it cannot serve. The fix is to request the right category, strengthen the profile with specific details, and correct the same framing everywhere else it appears.

How does the category shape AI answers?

G2 element What it feeds into AI answers
Category pages and grid reports "Best [category] software" lists; which products count as leaders
Alternatives and competitor pages "Alternatives to [competitor]" answers, built from products in the same category
Comparison pages Head-to-head answers between products in the same category
Profile description The words used to describe the product
Reviews Use cases and strengths mentioned in answers

G2's own analysis of 13.6 million AI answers, across eight answer engines and more than 25,000 products, found answers tracked the wording of G2 profiles. They paraphrased rather than copied. The analysis also found that specifics, such as named integrations, concrete use cases and unique feature claims, shaped descriptions more than generic category language. G2 sells profile upgrades, so read the findings as a vendor's analysis. The direction is consistent with how search-based answers use cited pages.

What symptoms suggest a category problem?

  • Assistants describe the product with the wrong category noun, such as "a survey tool" for a lead generation platform.
  • Alternatives answers list products your buyers would never compare you with.
  • The product is missing from "best [right category]" answers, even when it has more reviews than products that appear.
  • Comparison answers pit you against the wrong competitors, often ones that look stronger in that category.
  • Sales hears prospects say "I thought you were a [wrong category] tool."

How do you test it?

  1. Ask directly: "What kind of software is [product]?" and "What is [product] similar to?"
  2. Ask category questions for both the right and the wrong category: "Best lead generation software for small businesses" and "Best survey software".
  3. Ask alternatives questions for your real competitors: "Alternatives to [competitor]".
  4. Record the category words used for you, the lists you appear in, and whether G2 pages are cited.
  5. Compare with your G2 profile's primary and secondary categories.

If answers consistently use the wrong category and cite G2 pages, the category is a likely cause.

How do you get the category changed?

G2's category pages set out the requirements a product must meet to be included. To move:

  • Read the inclusion requirements for the category you belong in, and confirm your product meets them.
  • Request the change through G2's vendor admin or support, with evidence: product pages and documentation that show the qualifying features. G2 generally categorises products by the features they have natively, not by what customers use them for or by features reached through integrations, so a request succeeds when it shows the product itself has the category's required features.
  • Keep secondary categories accurate. Remove categories that no longer fit, rather than collecting as many as possible. Loose categories dilute how the product is described.
  • Update the profile description to lead with the right category noun and specific capabilities, integrations and use cases.
  • Ask every customer for an honest review in their own words. Reviewers' own descriptions of how they use the product also shape answers.

Category decisions are made by the platform, so expect a review process rather than an instant switch.

What else needs fixing at the same time?

G2 is rarely the only source. The same wrong framing often appears elsewhere:

  • Other review platforms, such as Capterra, GetApp, Software Advice and TrustRadius, with their own categories.
  • Software directories and marketplaces, including integration marketplaces that list your app under a category.
  • Your own site, if the homepage or title tags use a different category noun from the one buyers use.
  • Old press and articles that described an earlier version of the product.

Align all of them to the same category language. Assistants are more confident when sources agree. A process for keeping details aligned everywhere is set out in how to make a brand's information consistent across AI-visible sources. Wrong categories more generally are covered in why AI puts a product or company in the wrong category.

How long does the change take to show?

After the category and profile change, search-based answers that cite G2 can reflect it once the pages are recrawled and G2's category and alternatives pages update. That is often within weeks. Answers from a model's own knowledge keep the old framing until newer models are released. Track category words in answers monthly, separately for answers with and without citations.

What might an illustrative case look like?

Consider an illustrative interactive quiz platform used mainly for lead generation. On G2 it sits in "Survey Software" as its primary category. Assistants describe it as "a survey tool with quiz features", list it among survey platforms, and never include it in "best lead generation software" answers. Its G2 alternatives page shows survey tools. The vendor requests a move to a lead generation category, showing its built-in lead capture forms, lead routing and conversion reporting. It rewrites the profile to lead with lead generation use cases and named integrations, and aligns its Capterra category and homepage title. Two months after the change, search-based answers mostly call it a lead generation quiz tool. It appears in some lead generation answers, alongside competitors buyers actually compare it with.

What do people ask about G2 categories and AI?

Do AI assistants really use G2?

Many answers about software cite review platforms, including G2. In one 2026 study of Google AI Overviews for 30,000 commercial keywords, about a third cited at least one review platform, most often for questions that ask for reviews.

Is it better to be in more categories?

Only in categories that genuinely fit. Extra categories can spread the product's description across unrelated lists.

Does a paid G2 profile help AI visibility?

G2 reports that paid profiles are cited more often, but it is the vendor making that claim. Complete, specific profile content and genuine reviews are what any vendor can control.

What if G2 declines the category change?

Check the inclusion requirements again. If the product does not yet meet them, the category may genuinely not fit, and positioning may need a rethink.
