How Does Perplexity Retrieve and Cite Sources in Real Time?

Perplexity retrieves and cites sources by running a web search for each question at the moment it is asked. It pulls candidate pages from its own index, which it describes as covering hundreds of billions of web pages. It also fetches pages live when a user supplies a link or a page needs checking. It then selects the passages that best answer the question, writes an answer with a language model and attaches numbered citations to the claims. Its PerplexityBot crawler builds the index and follows robots.txt. A separate fetcher, Perplexity-User, retrieves pages for specific user requests. Citations are shown prominently, which makes Perplexity the easiest engine to audit, but they do not always support the sentences they are attached to.

How does Perplexity answer a question, step by step?

Perplexity has not published its full ranking method, but the broad process is clear from its documentation and from how answers behave:

  1. Interpret the question. Perplexity reformulates the question into one or more searches. Its more thorough modes, such as Pro Search and research modes, run several searches and follow-up searches before answering.
  2. Retrieve candidates. It pulls matching pages from its index and, when needed, fetches pages live.
  3. Select passages. It picks the sections most relevant to the question, weighing how directly they answer it, how recent they are for time-sensitive topics, and the type of source.
  4. Generate the answer. A language model writes the answer from those passages. Paid subscribers can choose among models from several AI companies.
  5. Attach citations. Numbered markers link claims to sources, and the full source list appears alongside the answer.

Because the search happens per question, answers can reflect pages published hours earlier, if the index or a live fetch has reached them.

What does "real time" mean in practice?

Real time means Perplexity searches when you ask, not that it has read every page on the web that minute. Two routes supply fresh content:

  • The index. PerplexityBot crawls and refreshes pages. A new page appears in answers once it has been crawled, which can take hours to weeks depending on how easily the page is discovered.
  • Live fetching. When a user pastes a URL or a question requires checking a specific page, Perplexity-User fetches it directly.

So a new page on a well-linked site can be cited quickly, while a new page on a small site with no links pointing to it may wait. Whether Perplexity relies on Google's index is covered in whether Perplexity has its own search index or relies on Google.

Which bots does Perplexity use, and how should you treat them?

  • PerplexityBot crawls for Perplexity's search index. Perplexity says it is not used to train foundation models and that it follows robots.txt. It publishes the IP addresses it uses, so firewalls can allow it.
  • Perplexity-User fetches pages when a user asks about them. Perplexity says that, because a person requested the fetch, this fetcher generally ignores robots.txt.

In August 2025, Cloudflare said Perplexity had used undeclared crawlers to reach sites that had blocked its declared bots. Perplexity disputed the claims. For visibility, the practical steps are simple: allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt and in any firewall or CDN bot rules, and allow its published IP ranges.

How accurate are Perplexity's citations?

More accurate than many rivals in one test, but far from perfect. In a March 2025 study by the Tow Center for Digital Journalism, eight AI search tools were asked to identify the source of 1,600 news excerpts. Perplexity answered 37% of queries incorrectly. Several other tools did far worse; one was wrong on 94%. A citation beside a sentence shows where Perplexity looked, not proof that the page says exactly that. When auditing your own citations, open the cited page and check. How to count citations that do not support their claim is covered in whether to count a Perplexity citation when the linked page does not support the claim.

What helps a page get cited by Perplexity?

  • Access. PerplexityBot allowed, no firewall challenges, and key text in the page HTML. Perplexity's crawler, like most AI crawlers, does not run JavaScript.
  • A direct answer early in a clearly headed section, so the passage stands on its own.
  • Specific facts: numbers, dates, names, prices and conditions that other pages lack.
  • Freshness on changing topics. Seer Interactive found about 75% of pages cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity in spring 2026 had been updated within the previous year. Update pages when facts change, not just their dates.
  • Discoverability: internal links, a sitemap and links from other sites, so new pages are crawled quickly.

Whether Perplexity prefers recently updated pages over older authoritative ones is covered in whether Perplexity favors recently updated pages.

Can Perplexity Pages influence which sources appear in later answers?

Probably not in any way you can rely on. Perplexity Pages, launched in May 2024, let users turn research into formatted, shareable articles. They are public and can be indexed by Google. Perplexity also publishes AI-generated pages for trending topics in its Discover feed, and some of these rank in Google.

Perplexity has not said that Pages feed back into how it selects sources for other users' answers. A Page is itself an AI summary that cites other sources, so it adds no independent evidence. Creating Pages about your own brand is unlikely to change what Perplexity says about you. It can also look like self-promotion if it cites only your own site. The sources that shape answers are still the pages the Page would cite: your site, reviews, directories and independent articles. If you do create a Page, treat it as a way to share research, and make sure it links to your most accurate pages.

How do you track Perplexity citations?

Perplexity's visible source lists make measurement straightforward:

  • Run your buyer questions regularly, several times each, and record which domains and pages are cited and whether your brand is named.
  • Check each citation for whether the cited page supports the claim.
  • Watch referral traffic from perplexity.ai in Google Analytics 4. Perplexity is not part of GA4's built-in AI Assistant channel, so its visits appear under Referral; filter Referral by source perplexity.ai, or add a custom channel group with a perplexity.ai rule.
  • Check server logs for PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User requests, and fix any errors or blocks.

Perplexity's source lists also show which third-party sites matter most in your category, which helps plan outreach.

What might an illustrative case look like?

Consider an illustrative home energy consultancy that publishes a detailed guide to heat pump grants, updated each time the rules change. Its logs show PerplexityBot fetching the guide within a day of each update, and Perplexity answers to grant questions cite it, often alongside the government's own page. When the consultancy later adds a firewall rule that challenges unfamiliar bots, the citations stop within weeks. Its logs show PerplexityBot receiving challenge pages. After it allows Perplexity's published IP ranges, the guide returns to answers within about two weeks of the next crawl.

What do people ask about how Perplexity cites sources?

Does Perplexity use Google results?

Perplexity says it runs its own index. How it uses other providers is not fully disclosed, and legal claims about its data sources remain allegations.

How many sources does a Perplexity answer cite?

It varies with the question and mode. Quick answers usually cite a handful; research modes can cite dozens.

Can I ask Perplexity to stop citing my site?

Blocking PerplexityBot stops Perplexity indexing the text of your pages, but Perplexity says it may still index the domain, headline and a brief factual summary, and user-requested fetches may still occur. So blocking reduces citations but does not guarantee Perplexity stops linking to you.

Does Perplexity show ads inside answers?

No. Perplexity tested sponsored follow-up questions from late 2024, but it stopped taking new advertisers in late 2025 and said in February 2026 that it had dropped advertising because it could hurt trust in its answers.
