How Long Does It Take Google and AI Search Engines to Pick Up a New Website?

A new website is usually crawled by Google within a few days to a few weeks, and AI search engines can start using it once the search indexes they rely on have picked it up. That often happens within weeks for Google's AI features, Copilot, ChatGPT and Perplexity. It can take longer for Claude, whose web search depends on Brave Search. Being found is not the same as being recommended, though. A new site can be cited for specific questions it answers well within a month or two. Being recommended for competitive "best" questions usually takes months of reviews, mentions and coverage. Getting into what models remember from training takes until the next model update, which can be a year or more.

What is the typical timeline for each engine?

Engine What has to happen Typical time for a new site How to speed it up
Google Search, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini Googlebot crawls and indexes pages A few days to a few weeks Search Console, sitemap, URL Inspection
Microsoft Copilot Bingbot crawls and indexes Days to weeks Bing Webmaster Tools, IndexNow
ChatGPT search Pages reachable through its search providers or fetched by OpenAI's crawlers Usually after it is crawlable and in major search indexes Allow OAI-SearchBot; get indexed in Google and Bing
Perplexity PerplexityBot crawls, or pages found through other sources Weeks, varying by site Allow PerplexityBot, clear internal links, mentions elsewhere
Claude web search Brave Search discovers and indexes pages Can be slower for new, little-visited sites Get indexed and ranking in Google, real visits and mentions; allow Googlebot, Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User
Model memory (answers without search) Included in a future training run Months to over a year Nothing direct; build coverage elsewhere

These are typical ranges, not guarantees. Sites with strong links and mentions are found faster; isolated sites on new domains are found slower.

How long does Google take to find a new site?

Google's documentation says crawling can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks after you ask it to recrawl. Indexing is not guaranteed even then: pages that seem thin or duplicate may be crawled but not indexed. Google's AI features can only use pages that are indexed and eligible to show a snippet, so the same timeline applies to AI Overviews and AI Mode. What happens after indexing, including how long it takes to appear in AI Overviews, is covered in how long it takes to appear in Google AI Overviews.

To speed it up, verify the site in Search Console, submit an XML sitemap, request indexing for the most important pages through URL Inspection, and link to the new site from any existing profiles you control. Requesting indexing repeatedly for the same page does not make it faster; Google applies a quota.

How long does ChatGPT take to index and recommend a new website?

ChatGPT has no index you can submit to. OpenAI says ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers alongside content from partners, and its OAI-SearchBot crawler gathers pages for search results. In practice, a new site tends to become findable in ChatGPT search once OAI-SearchBot can crawl it and the site appears in the major search indexes, often within a few weeks of launch. OpenAI draws on its own indexes and third-party search data, so get indexed in both Google and Bing rather than relying on one.

Being recommended is a separate step. ChatGPT recommends brands that are well supported by independent sources. A brand-new business usually has no reviews, lists or articles about it yet. Expect weeks to be cited for specific questions your pages answer uniquely, and months to be recommended for broader ones. Recommendations from model memory, without searching, wait until a future model is trained on data that includes you.

To speed it up: get the site indexed in Google and Bing (Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow help there), check that robots.txt and your CDN allow OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User, and earn early mentions on sites ChatGPT already cites for your category.

How long does it take for a website to appear in Perplexity?

Perplexity runs its own crawler, PerplexityBot, to surface pages in its answers, and also draws on other sources. There is no submission tool and no published timeline. New sites typically start appearing within a few weeks once they are linked from elsewhere and crawlable, and faster for questions few other pages answer. Perplexity leans on current, clearly written pages, so a new page with a precise answer to a specific question can be cited sooner than a general page.

To speed it up, allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt and at your CDN, make sure every page is linked from your navigation or sitemap, and publish pages that answer specific questions directly.

How long does it take Claude to discover a new webpage?

Claude's web search is powered by Brave Search, which Anthropic lists as its web search subprocessor. That makes Brave's index the main gate. An analysis by Profound of about 35,000 Claude citations, reported by the technical SEO agency MERJ, found that 79.2% of cited URLs were in Brave's top 10 for the matching query, compared with 34% in Google's top 10.

Brave discovers pages differently from Google. Brave says its crawler is partly powered by the Web Discovery Project, an opt-in feature in the Brave browser that reports pages its users visit. According to MERJ's analysis of how Brave discovers pages, a page found only through visits needs around 20 different opted-in users before it counts. A page that appears in another search engine's results needs just one user to see it there. A new site with few visitors can therefore take noticeably longer to enter Brave, and so Claude, than to enter Google.

Brave offers a submit URL form, but its stated purpose is to re-fetch a page, not to guarantee indexing. The practical route is to get indexed and ranking in other engines, attract real visitors, and make sure Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User are allowed.

Why is being found different from being recommended?

Indexing makes your pages available; recommendation requires evidence. For "best X" questions, engines favour brands named repeatedly by independent sources: reviews, comparison articles, directories and publications. A new site has none of that at launch. It can be cited quickly when its page is the clearest answer to a narrow question, such as a detailed guide on a niche problem. Being recommended as a provider takes as long as it takes to build reviews and mentions. How new sites can get cited despite low authority is covered in whether low-authority or new websites can get cited by AI search engines.

How can you speed up discovery across all engines?

  1. Verify the site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, and submit sitemaps to both.
  2. Enable IndexNow if your platform supports it, so Bing and other participating engines hear about new pages quickly.
  3. Allow AI crawlers in robots.txt and in your CDN or firewall settings.
  4. Serve content in the HTML, since most AI crawlers do not run JavaScript.
  5. Link the site from profiles you control: business listings, social profiles, directories and partner pages.
  6. Publish a few strong pages first: clear service or product pages and an answer to the question your customers ask most.
  7. Earn a handful of early mentions from local press, industry directories, partners or customers.

How can you check whether each engine has found you?

  • Google and Bing: use Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools coverage reports, or a site: search.
  • ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude: ask each one, with web search on, a question only your site answers, or ask it to summarise a specific URL. Note whether it finds and cites the page.
  • Server logs: look for requests from Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User, and check they received 200 responses.

What do people ask about new websites and AI search?

Does a new domain need to age before AI engines trust it?

There is no fixed ageing period. What matters is whether engines can find the site and whether independent sources support it, which naturally takes time.

Should I submit my site to ChatGPT or Claude?

There is no general submission form for either. Get indexed in Google, Bing and Brave and allow their crawlers; ChatGPT does accept product feeds from merchants through its own programme.

Will a JavaScript-built site be picked up more slowly?

By AI crawlers that do not run JavaScript, yes, if content only appears after scripts run. Server-side rendering or pre-rendering fixes this.

How many pages does a new site need?

Fewer than people expect, as long as each answers a real question well. See how many pages a first website needs to be cited by AI search engines.
