How Much Does GEO Cost, and What Should a Realistic Budget Include?

GEO costs whatever the work behind it costs: measuring AI visibility, improving content, earning third-party mentions and fixing technical access. A small business can start with a few hours of staff time a month and a tracking tool costing under $100. Agency retainers that include content and outreach commonly run from about $1,500 to $15,000 a month. Enterprise programmes covering many markets and product lines cost more. Most of the spend is labour, not software. A realistic budget sets aside money for measurement, for the content and PR work that changes results, and for enough time to see an effect, usually three to six months. Much of it can come from the existing SEO budget, because the work overlaps.

What does a GEO budget pay for?

Component What it covers Suggested starting share
Measurement Tracking tools or API costs; time to run and review questions 10–20%
Content Improving key pages, new pages for unanswered questions, original data 30–45%
Off-site work Reviews, digital PR, contributions to publications, listings and profiles 20–35%
Technical fixes Crawler access, rendering, structured data, site structure 5–15%, front-loaded
Strategy and reporting Question set, analysis, monthly reports, planning 10–15%

These shares are our suggested starting split, not measured industry averages. Shift them towards whichever work your gaps call for: content if engines cite others' pages for questions you should own, off-site work if they cite lists and reviews you are absent from.

Budgets that are mostly tools and reports tend to produce dashboards without change. The measurement share should stay modest; the work that moves results is content and off-site presence.

How much does AI SEO cost compared with traditional SEO?

Much of it is the same work. Technical SEO, helpful content and earned links support both Google rankings and AI visibility, so a business already investing in SEO has covered a large part of GEO. The extra costs are:

  • AI visibility tracking, which standard SEO tools only partly cover;
  • content changes for answer-first writing and questions your site does not yet answer;
  • more off-site work, because AI answers lean heavily on reviews, publications and lists;
  • analysis time to understand why competitors are cited.

As a planning assumption, expect GEO to add a fraction of an existing SEO budget, in our estimate often 10–30%, rather than a new budget of the same size. Businesses with little SEO foundation pay more, because they need the foundations as well.

How much should you spend on AI search optimization tools?

Enough to track the questions that matter reliably, and no more. Self-serve tracking tools commonly start below $100 a month for a limited number of prompts, with higher tiers adding prompts, engines, markets and competitors. Enterprise platforms cost considerably more. For one-off audits, compare automated reports with agency audits on what each includes and costs. Before paying, check how many prompts, engines and runs a tier includes, since tools that run each prompt once give noisier results. Whether the price is worth it depends on scale:

Situation Sensible tool spend
Small business, 20–30 questions, 2–3 engines $0–100 a month; manual checks or an entry-level tool
Growing business, 50–100 questions, several engines $100–500 a month
Agency with many clients, or several markets $500–2,000+ a month
Enterprise, many products, markets and languages Enterprise contracts, often with API access

A do-it-yourself alternative is to run questions through the engines' APIs with a script. The cost is questions × runs × engines × price per call. Check each provider's current pricing, remembering that web search is usually billed on top of model tokens.

Is spending more than $100 a month on GEO unreasonable?

No, if the spend covers work that changes results. $100 a month is reasonable for tracking alone for a small business. It is not a realistic budget for GEO as a whole if you want visibility to change, because content and off-site work cost more than measurement. The mistake is the opposite: paying hundreds a month for a dashboard while nobody acts on it.

How much of your marketing budget should go to AEO and GEO experiments?

Start with a time-boxed experiment rather than a permanent budget line:

  1. Size it at roughly 5–15% of your organic search budget, or a fixed amount you can afford to lose.
  2. Define the test: 30–50 buyer questions, two or three engines, a baseline, and the changes you will make.
  3. Set success criteria in advance: for example, being mentioned in more of the answers to key questions, fixing inaccurate descriptions, or seeing more leads that cite AI assistants.
  4. Run it for three to six months, since content and mentions take time to show up.
  5. Decide to scale up, keep a maintenance level, or stop.

Businesses whose buyers already use AI assistants heavily, such as software, professional services and considered purchases, may justify more from the start. Whether it is worth prioritising now is covered in whether it is too early to prioritise GEO.

How much should an enterprise budget for GEO?

Enterprise costs scale with the number of products, markets and languages. A typical programme includes:

  • enterprise tracking across engines, markets and languages;
  • a content team or agency updating product, category and help content at scale;
  • digital PR and analyst relations aimed at the sources engines cite;
  • engineering time for rendering, structured data, feeds and crawler access;
  • analytics to connect AI visibility with pipeline and revenue.

Many enterprises fund this largely from existing SEO, content and PR budgets, with incremental spend on tracking, analysis and extra content. Programmes range from low five figures to six figures a quarter, depending on scope.

How much does an enterprise AEO program cost, and what ROI can it deliver?

Cost is the sum of the components above. ROI depends on how much of the buying journey runs through AI assistants and on the value of a customer, so it has to be estimated for each business:

  1. Estimate the number of relevant buyer questions asked in AI assistants each month.
  2. Estimate your current and target share of answers that mention or recommend you.
  3. Apply a conversion assumption from AI referrals and from "heard about you from an AI assistant" leads.
  4. Multiply by average deal value and margin.
  5. Compare with programme cost, and test the assumptions after two quarters with real data.

Treat published ROI multiples with caution; they are rarely based on a controlled comparison. Visitors from AI assistants often convert well because they arrive after comparing options, which is why even modest traffic can matter in high-value B2B sales. Agency pricing specifically is covered in how much GEO and AEO agencies charge per month.

What do realistic budgets look like?

Local service business (one location):

Item Monthly
Staff time, about 8 hours Existing staff
Entry-level tracking tool or manual checks $0–100
Review requests and listings maintenance Existing staff
Two improved service pages a month (freelance writer) $200–600
Total cash spend About $200–700

Mid-sized B2B software company:

Item Monthly
Tracking across 80 questions, four engines $200–500
Content: four page improvements, one new comparison or data piece $2,000–5,000
Digital PR and review programme $1,500–4,000
Analysis and reporting (in-house or agency) $1,000–2,500
Total About $4,700–12,000

These are illustrative ranges, not quotes. Your costs depend on local rates and how much already exists.

Where is GEO budget most often wasted?

  • Tools without action: tracking many prompts daily while nothing on the site changes.
  • Generic content at volume: many thin pages that engines have no reason to cite.
  • Schema and llms.txt as the main project, when they are small parts of the work.
  • Buying placements in lists or directories that engines do not cite.
  • Stopping too early, before content and mentions have had time to register.

What do people ask about GEO costs?

Can I do GEO for free?

You can start with staff time: manual checks, content improvements and review requests. Costs rise when you need scale, speed or outside expertise.

Should GEO be a separate budget line?

Often it starts inside the SEO or content budget. A separate line helps once you can show results and need dedicated tracking or PR.

Why do agency quotes vary so much?

They include different amounts of content, PR and reporting. Compare the work included, not the headline price.

How long before a GEO budget shows results?

Technical and accuracy fixes can show within weeks; changes in recommendations usually take three to six months.
