How Perplexity Shopping Works for Brands

Perplexity Shopping answers product questions with a written recommendation, citations and product cards showing images, prices and review summaries. Since November 2025 it has been free for US users, with Instant Buy checkout through PayPal for participating merchants. Placement is organic: brands cannot pay to appear. Brands get in through three routes. First, pages Perplexity can crawl and cite, which feed its answers. Second, the free Perplexity Merchant Program, for sharing structured product data. Third, PayPal's Store Sync, which makes a catalogue purchasable in chat and currently covers physical goods sold to US customers in dollars. Most brands should start with the first two.

How does Perplexity Shopping work?

Stage What happens What it draws on
Question A shopper asks, for example, for the best DSLR camera under $2,000 The conversation, and personal preferences if the shopper allows
Answer Perplexity writes a recommendation with citations Its own web index, reviews and buying guides
Product cards A Shopping tab shows products with images, prices and pros and cons Merchant product data and web pages
Purchase Instant Buy through PayPal for compatible merchants; otherwise a link to the store PayPal's agentic commerce services

Perplexity launched shopping for its Pro subscribers in November 2024 with a one-click “Buy with Pro” option, then relaunched it in November 2025 as a free experience with PayPal checkout, starting with merchants such as Abercrombie & Fitch, Ashley Furniture, Fabletics, Adorama and Newegg. Perplexity runs its own crawler and index, as covered in whether Perplexity has its own search index.

What is the Perplexity Merchant Program for structured product data?

The Merchant Program is Perplexity's free route for retailers to share product information directly, much as Google Merchant Center does for Google Shopping. Perplexity described it in 2024 as free for merchants, with free API access and insights. What it involves:

  • Applying through a short form with your brand, website, contact details and product category, followed by business verification. Merchants on Shopify, BigCommerce or PayPal integrations may be onboarded through those routes.
  • Sharing a product feed. Perplexity does not publish a feed specification of its own. Feed tools and published guides describe CSV feeds following Google's product data specification, delivered by a hosted URL or SFTP.
  • Traffic tracking. Links from Perplexity carry UTM parameters, and members get a dashboard of search and shopping trends.

There are no fees. Joining is not a guarantee of placement: Perplexity has not published how it ranks products, and it says results are not paid.

How can my store become eligible for Perplexity Instant Buy?

Instant Buy lets a shopper buy without leaving Perplexity: PayPal handles payment and the merchant fulfils the order. Perplexity's help centre says it supports Instant Buy only with merchants compatible with its agentic checkout. In practice that means PayPal's agentic commerce services:

  1. Be a PayPal merchant using PayPal's Orders v2 integration, or Braintree with a compatible setup.
  2. Sell physical goods to US customers in US dollars. Store Sync does not currently support digital goods, subscriptions or customers outside the US.
  3. Share your product catalogue with PayPal through Store Sync, which lets AI assistants search your catalogue, build carts and place orders that arrive in your existing order system.
  4. Request access through PayPal's form for its AI team.

PayPal named Wix, Commerce (BigCommerce and Feedonomics), Cymbio and Shopware as partners for connecting catalogues. You remain the merchant of record and keep the customer relationship. The same integration can make you purchasable on other AI surfaces PayPal connects to.

What improves placement?

Perplexity has not published its product ranking, so rely on what it needs to answer well:

  • Complete, accurate product data: titles with the key attribute, real specifications, current prices and stock, and valid GTINs.
  • Crawlable product pages with prices and specifications in the HTML and Product markup. PerplexityBot must be allowed, as covered in whether Perplexity needs PerplexityBot access.
  • Reviews on your site and on retailers', since product cards summarise pros and cons from customer reviews.
  • Coverage in buying guides and independent reviews that Perplexity cites for the category.
  • Consistency between your feed, your pages and retailer listings, so Perplexity can match the product and trust the price.

Where product details are wrong in answers, the cause is usually weak or conflicting source content, as covered in how poor product content leads AI to give wrong information.

How does it differ from ChatGPT and Google's AI Mode?

The three assistants handle purchases differently, which changes the work for a merchant:

Perplexity ChatGPT Google AI Mode
In-chat purchase Instant Buy, paid through PayPal Mostly on the merchant's site, opened from the chat Checkout for eligible merchants who opt in
How products get in Merchant Program data, PayPal Store Sync and crawled pages Merchant feeds, Shopify Catalog and crawled pages Merchant Center feeds and the Shopping Graph
Who fulfils orders The merchant The merchant The merchant

For Shopify merchants, Shopify says products reach ChatGPT automatically through its catalogue, while AI Mode checkout is an opt-in and Perplexity requires the Merchant Program. A single set of accurate product data serves all three.

What about Amazon and marketplace products?

Perplexity also has an AI browser, Comet, that can act on shopping sites for users. Amazon sued Perplexity in November 2025 over Comet's shopping on Amazon; a federal judge granted a preliminary injunction in March 2026, and an appeals court overturned it in August 2026. For brands, the practical point is that agent shopping on marketplaces is legally unsettled, while selling through Merchant Program data and PayPal checkout is an arrangement you control.

How do you measure results?

  • Track referrals from perplexity.ai in analytics, using the UTM parameters on Merchant Program links.
  • Watch Instant Buy orders in your PayPal and order systems.
  • Test questions monthly. Ask Perplexity the questions your buyers ask, check the Shopping tab, and note whether your products appear, at what price and with which review summary.
  • Compare with other assistants, since the same data work helps ChatGPT and Google's AI Mode, as covered in how to prepare a catalogue for ChatGPT.

We have not joined the Merchant Program or set up Store Sync ourselves. This page is based on Perplexity's and PayPal's announcements and documentation, Shopify's guide and published feed-tool documentation.

What might this look like in practice?

Consider an illustrative US outdoor cookware brand, Emberline, that saw competitors' pans in Perplexity's Shopping tab but never its own. Its product pages loaded prices by script, and its GTINs were missing. The team moved prices into the HTML, added real barcodes, applied to the Merchant Program with a Google-format feed, and, as an existing PayPal merchant, requested Store Sync access. Two months later its cast-iron range appeared in answers for camping cookware questions, a handful of orders came through Instant Buy, and UTM-tagged visits showed which products shoppers compared.
