How Should I Mark a Temporarily Closed Business So AI Gives the Right Answer?

To mark a temporarily closed business so AI gives the right answer, use the right status in each place and say when you will reopen. On your Google Business Profile, use "temporarily closed" for closures longer than a week, and special hours for closures of a week or less. Never use "permanently closed". Then state the closure and the reopening date in plain text on your website, in a profile update, and on your other listings, and add dated hours to your structured data. Assistants combine these sources. When they agree on "closed until 16 March", answers usually say that. When they disagree, or say nothing about reopening, answers often turn "temporarily closed" into "closed" or even "permanently closed".

What should you set where?

Place What to set Notes
Google Business Profile "Temporarily closed" for more than 7 days; special hours for 7 days or less Google's guidance: use temporarily closed for closures over a week, off-season closures or indefinite closures
Business Profile update A post with the closure dates, the reason and the reopening date Customers see it on the profile
Website A banner and a dated statement on the home and contact pages Plain text, not only an image
Hours page Current hours, the closure period and seasonal hours Assistants often cite hours pages
Structured data Opening hours with valid-from and valid-through dates for the closure Supports the text; does not replace it
Apple Business, Bing Places, Yelp and other directories Their temporary closure options, where available, or a dated note Keeps other assistants' sources in line
Social profiles A pinned post with dates Can be cited for "is it open?" questions
Phone greeting The closure dates and reopening date Callers checking AI answers get the same message

Google's local business structured data documentation includes examples of dated opening hours. A closure period can be expressed with valid-from and valid-through dates, alongside your regular hours.

What wording works best?

Be specific and dated, and make "temporary" unmissable:

"We are temporarily closed for renovation from 1 February to 15 March 2027. We reopen on Tuesday 16 March at 9 am. Gift cards and bookings made before the closure remain valid."

Avoid wording that reads as permanent, such as "We have closed our doors", "Thank you for 20 wonderful years" or "Closed until further notice" with no explanation. If you do not yet know the reopening date, say so, with the reason and when you will update: "We expect to reopen in spring 2027 and will confirm the date in January." How a closure can spread to the whole business is covered in why AI recommends a competitor instead of a still-open location after one branch closes.

Why does an AI assistant say my seasonal store is closed in the off-season?

Because in the off-season, the sources say you are closed and many do not say when you reopen. An answer of "closed" is technically true in January but misleading, since people planning a summer visit read it as "gone". Common causes:

  • The Business Profile shows "temporarily closed" with no reopening information in the description or updates.
  • The website says "closed for the season" without dates.
  • Reviews and posts from the previous season stop in October, which can look like a business that has shut.
  • Hours pages show only summer hours, so off-season questions have no clear answer.

To fix it:

  1. Publish season dates all year: "Open daily from 1 May to 30 September. Closed October to April. Reopening 1 May 2027."
  2. Mention the season in your Business Profile description. Google's guidelines allow a business to indicate in its description that it is open only for a specific seasonal period.
  3. Use temporarily closed in the off-season, plus a profile update with the reopening date.
  4. Keep posting occasionally in the off-season, such as reopening dates, bookings and events, so the business looks active.
  5. Add seasonal hours to structured data with valid-from and valid-through dates.

What about sudden closures, such as storms or emergencies?

Unplanned closures need the same signals, faster. Set special hours on your Business Profile for the affected days, or temporarily closed if you do not know when you will reopen. Post a short update with the reason and when you will next update customers. Put a one-line notice at the top of your website, and change your phone greeting. When you reopen, reverse every change on the same day. Sudden closures are when stale information does most harm, because people check quickly, often by asking an assistant "is [business] open today?", and act on the answer straight away.

Should the closure notice stay up after reopening?

No. Replace it with a short "we have reopened" note for a week or two, then remove it, so assistants do not keep describing the business as closed.

How do you reopen cleanly?

  • Switch the Business Profile back to open on the day you reopen, and remove any special hours.
  • Remove or replace banners and closure notices, and post a "we're open" update.
  • Update directories and social profiles the same day.
  • Check your structured data so the closure dates have passed and regular hours are current.
  • Ask every customer for an honest review in the first weeks after reopening, which signals the business is active again.

Then test "Is [business] open today?" and "[category] open now near [area]" in Google, Gemini, ChatGPT and Perplexity. Incorrect hours generally are covered in why AI shows incorrect business hours and how a local business can fix them.

How do you check what assistants say during a closure?

Ask: "Is [business] open?", "Is [business] permanently closed?", "When does [business] reopen?" and "[category] open this weekend in [town]". Run each a few times at the start of the closure, midway and just before reopening. Record whether answers say temporarily closed with the right date, closed without a date, permanently closed, or open. Fix whichever source the wrong answers cite.

What might an illustrative case look like?

Consider an illustrative beach café open from May to September. In February, customers planning trips were told by assistants that it was "permanently closed", and bookings for its summer events fell. The café's Business Profile had been set to permanently closed by mistake in October, and its website said only "See you next season!". It switched the profile to temporarily closed and added a description line about its season. It posted an update with the 1 May reopening date and published season dates on its home and hours pages. It also added dated opening hours to its markup. Within two weeks, answers said the café was closed for the season and reopening on 1 May.

What do people ask about temporary closures and AI answers?

Should we mark the business permanently closed during a long renovation?

No. Use temporarily closed, even for long closures, and give the reopening date or the expected timing.

Will a temporary closure hurt our visibility?

Some visibility drops while you are closed. Clear dates help assistants and customers return to you when you reopen.

How soon before reopening should we announce the date?

As soon as it is confirmed, then again a week or two before you reopen.
