Is Quora Worth Investing In for LLM Visibility and GEO?
Quora is worth investing in for Google's AI answers in some categories and, on the evidence, for Claude, but less predictably for ChatGPT and Perplexity. Quora is among the sites Google's AI Overviews cite most. Ahrefs ranked it sixth in its September 2026 US data, with 4.7% of the citation share among the top 50 sites. But Quora's robots.txt blocks OpenAI's search and user crawlers, all three of Anthropic's crawlers and Perplexity's crawler. Yet in Muck Rack's May 2026 study, quora.com was Claude's third most cited domain, so a crawler block does not stop citations. It is worth a modest, honest investment if your buyers' questions show Quora in Google's AI answers, and if you have people who can write useful answers with their affiliation disclosed.
What does the evidence show?
- Google's AI Overviews cite Quora heavily. In Ahrefs' September 2026 list, quora.com had 4.7% of the citation share among the 50 most-cited sites, with about 171,000 distinct pages cited. SE Ranking's 2025 study of AI Overviews in five US locations placed Quora among the most-cited sources after Google itself, alongside YouTube and Wikipedia.
- Other AI engines' crawlers are largely shut out, though citations still happen. Quora's robots.txt disallows everything for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User. It does the same for ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User, and for PerplexityBot. OpenAI's crawler documentation says sites that block OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, apart from navigational links. The file also names a "Bravebot" token, but Brave says its crawler does not use a separate user agent and crawls whatever Googlebot may crawl, so Brave's index can include Quora pages. Anthropic's web search draws on Brave, which may be why Claude cites Quora often despite the block on Anthropic's own crawlers.
- Google and a few others are allowed. Googlebot and Google-Extended can crawl Quora's question and answer pages, so Google Search, AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini's grounding can all use them. Applebot and Amazonbot are also allowed. Applebot-Extended, which governs Apple's AI training use, is blocked.
- Bing is not named, so it falls under Quora's general rule, which blocks almost everything. That matters because Bing's index feeds several other AI answers.
Robots.txt governs what compliant crawlers fetch, not what models learned from older data. Quora content may still surface in answers from training knowledge. But for search-based answers outside Google and Claude, Quora is less predictable.
Why does Google AI Overviews cite Quora so often, and should brands post there?
Quora cites well in Google for three reasons. It has an answer page for almost every question people ask in their own words. Answers come from people claiming first-hand experience, which suits opinion and comparison questions. And Google has crawled and ranked Quora for years, so its pages are indexed for a vast range of long, specific queries. AI Overviews often run several related searches, and a Quora page tends to exist for the phrasing of at least one of them.
Should brands post there? Only in these conditions:
- Your buyers' questions show Quora in Google's AI answers. Run 20 to 30 of your real buyer questions in Google and note how often Quora appears. If it rarely does, spend the time elsewhere.
- You have people with real expertise who can answer as themselves, with their role disclosed. Quora's policy asks users to disclose relevant affiliations in the answer or their credential.
- You can answer without selling. Quora's policies do not allow affiliate links, and they treat self-promotion that does not form part of a helpful answer as spam.
If those hold, a few strong answers on high-intent questions can earn citations in Google's AI answers. If not, Quora is a poor use of time.
How businesses can use Quora for buyer intent and AI discoverability
Quora's most reliable value may be as research rather than as a publishing channel.
As research:
- Find the questions buyers ask in their own words, including the context they add: budget, team size, what they have tried.
- See how competitors are described in answers, and which objections come up.
- Spot recurring confusions your own pages should address, then answer them on your site, where every AI engine can read them.
As a channel, done properly:
- Answer as a named person with a clear credential, such as "Head of Product at [company], a scheduling tool for clinics".
- Lead with a genuine answer to the question, as you would for a journalist: specific, practical, fair to alternatives.
- Mention your product only where it is relevant, and say plainly that it is yours.
- Keep links minimal and useful, such as a guide or data page, not a sales page.
- Choose questions with buying intent that Google's AI answers already cite, such as "what is the best [category] for [situation]".
- Update answers when your product or prices change, since old answers keep being cited.
Quora also sells ads, including promoted answers. Quora says promoting an answer does not change its ranking on question pages. Paid promotion buys attention on Quora, not a place in Google's AI answers.
How does Quora compare with other community and Q&A sources?
| Source | Reaches Google AI answers | Reaches ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity search | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quora | Yes, heavily cited | Blocked by robots.txt, yet Claude cites it often (Muck Rack 2026); little evidence for ChatGPT and Perplexity | Disclose affiliation; no affiliate links |
| YouTube | Yes, the most cited site in AI Overviews | Varies by engine | Video answers with transcripts and chapters |
| Industry forums and communities | Often | Often, if they allow the crawlers | Check each forum's robots.txt and rules |
| Review sites | Yes, especially for review questions | Many allow the main AI crawlers | Often more valuable for software and services |
| Your own site | Yes | Yes, if you allow the crawlers | The only source you fully control |
For most businesses, the questions you find on Quora are best answered first on your own site. That page can then be cited by every engine, not just Google.
How do you measure whether it is working?
- Track the specific Quora questions you answered: does Google's AI Overview for related queries cite that page, and does it reflect your answer?
- Record views and upvotes on your answers, which Quora shows, as a rough signal of reach.
- Watch referral traffic from Quora in analytics, and whether it converts.
- Compare time spent with the same time spent on your own content or review profiles.
Give it three months. If your answers are not being cited or read, stop. Whether GEO efforts pay off in general is covered in whether GEO works or is a waste of time and money. How long results take is covered in how long GEO takes to show results.
What might an illustrative case look like?
Consider an illustrative home energy consultancy that saw Quora cited in Google's AI Overviews for questions such as "is a heat pump worth it for an old house". Its lead engineer answered eight such questions over two months as a named person, with the firm disclosed in their credential. Each answer gave specific figures on insulation, running costs and when a heat pump is not suitable. Four answers began appearing among the Overview's sources. The consultancy also noticed that ChatGPT never cited Quora for the same questions. So it turned the same material into a guide on its own site, which ChatGPT and Perplexity began citing a month later.
What do people ask about Quora and AI visibility?
Does ChatGPT use Quora answers?
Not through search, if it respects Quora's robots.txt, which blocks OpenAI's crawlers. Older training data may include Quora content.
Should we create a company Quora account?
Answers from named people with credentials usually carry more weight than a brand account. A brand account can host a Space if you have a community to serve.
Can we pay to have answers featured in AI Overviews?
No. Quora ads promote answers on Quora; they do not affect Google's AI answers.
Is Quora better than our own blog for AI visibility?
Rarely. Your own pages can be read by every AI engine. Quora mainly reaches Google's AI answers and, on current evidence, Claude.
