What Do ChatGPT Ads Mean for AI Search Visibility, and What Are Its Best Practices?
ChatGPT ads are live, not just planned. OpenAI began testing them in the US in February 2026, opened a self-serve Ads Manager to US advertisers in May, and by late September 2026 businesses in more than 60 countries could buy them. Ads appear for logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans, labelled as sponsored and shown separately from the answer. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts see none. OpenAI says ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers, so buying ads does not buy citations or recommendations. For visibility, ads are a separate channel: useful where organic answers leave you out, but no substitute for being cited.
How did ChatGPT ads develop?
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| January 2026 | OpenAI published its advertising principles and said it would test ads on the Free and Go plans |
| February 2026 | Testing began in the US, with ads at the bottom of answers, labelled as sponsored |
| May 2026 | A beta self-serve Ads Manager opened, so advertisers could sign up and buy directly; product feed ads followed |
| August 2026 | Ads expanded to 31 European countries, then India, the Middle East and North Africa |
| September 2026 | OpenAI began testing Sponsored Agents, launched Shopify and HubSpot integrations, and expanded to Southeast Asia and Taiwan |
OpenAI's help centre lists which countries advertisers can buy from; the business being billed must be based in one of them.
Is OpenAI building an advertising platform, and what could it mean for recommendations?
It has already built one. The platform now includes Ads Manager, an Advertiser API, a measurement pixel and a Conversions API, and campaigns built from product feeds. In September 2026 OpenAI added prompt-based campaign creation inside ChatGPT, AI creative tools, and a test of Sponsored Agents: after clicking an ad, a user can start a separate, labelled conversation with an agent run by the business.
For recommendations, OpenAI's stated rules are the guide:
- Answer independence. OpenAI says ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives. Ads are labelled and kept separate.
- Sensitive topics excluded. Ads are not eligible to appear near topics such as health, mental health or politics.
- No ads for under-18s, whether the user says so or OpenAI predicts it.
- Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts are ad-free. The low-cost Go plan does show ads.
No independent study has tested whether ads change what ChatGPT answers. The first outside audit of ChatGPT ads, by University of Pennsylvania and Haverford College researchers in August 2026, covered over 3,000 ads from 186 advertisers. It found the ads clearly separated from the response text, that accounts began receiving ads about 14 days after creation, and that lower-income accounts were more likely to see them. What is clear is that ads compete for attention on the same screen. A shopper who sees a sponsored product below an answer may click it instead of a brand the answer named. How ads appear across Google, Microsoft and ChatGPT is compared in whether AI summaries will include ads.
What is the difference between ChatGPT ads and citations?
| Ads | Citations and recommendations | |
|---|---|---|
| Where they appear | Below or beside the answer, labelled as sponsored | Inside the answer, as named brands and source links |
| How you get them | Pay through Ads Manager, bidding for relevant conversations | Be the best-supported answer in content ChatGPT can find |
| Who sees them | Adults on Free and Go plans, in ad markets | Every user and plan |
| Cost | Pay per click or impression | No payment; ongoing content and reputation work |
| What users think | Recognisably paid | Read as ChatGPT's own view |
| How to measure | Ads Manager reports, pixel and Conversions API | Referral visits tagged utm_source=chatgpt.com, and prompt tracking |
The last two rows matter most. People weigh an answer differently from an ad, as discussed in whether organic AI citations carry more trust than paid placements. And because Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users see no ads, a brand that relies on ads is invisible to ChatGPT's higher-tier and workplace users; only Free and Go users can see it.
OpenAI Ads Manager versus organic ChatGPT Shopping visibility for retailers
Retailers now have two routes into ChatGPT's shopping answers:
- Organic. Products appear in shopping results from merchant feeds or crawled product pages, at no cost. You cannot choose placement; quality and relevance decide.
- Paid. Product feed campaigns in Ads Manager turn your catalogue into sponsored product ads, with budgets and bids you control. The same product file OpenAI uses for discovery can mark products as eligible for ads. Since September 2026, US Shopify merchants can run ChatGPT ads through a Shopify app that draws on Shopify Catalog, with other ad markets following.
Start organic, because it reaches every user and costs nothing per click. Fix the feed and product pages first, as covered in how to prepare a catalogue for ChatGPT. Then use ads for products or categories where organic answers leave you out, and compare the two using separate tracking.
Does OAI-AdsBot affect organic ChatGPT Search citations?
Not according to OpenAI. Its crawler documentation says each bot is controlled independently. OAI-AdsBot visits ad landing pages to check them for ChatGPT ads, and may use their content to judge relevance. It is not used for training. Organic visibility in ChatGPT search depends on OAI-SearchBot, not OAI-AdsBot.
So:
- If you run ChatGPT ads, let OAI-AdsBot reach your landing pages. Blocking it can stop OpenAI checking them.
- If you do not run ads, blocking or allowing it makes no documented difference to citations.
- Either way, keep OAI-SearchBot allowed. The difference between OpenAI's crawlers is covered in GPTBot versus OAI-SearchBot.
What are the best practices?
- Protect the organic base first. Allow OAI-SearchBot, keep product data accurate and publish content that answers buyers' questions.
- Find the gaps. Run your key questions in ChatGPT and note where you are missing. Those are the best places to test ads.
- Match landing pages to the conversation. Someone arriving from a detailed question expects a page that answers it, not your homepage.
- Measure the channels separately. Use Ads Manager and the pixel or Conversions API for ads, and chatgpt.com referrals for organic, as set out in how to track ChatGPT referrals in GA4.
- Check eligibility. Health, mental health and political topics are excluded, so some sectors will see few placements.
- Never present an ad as a recommendation. “As recommended by ChatGPT” in marketing is misleading if the placement was paid.
- Start small and review often. The platform is changing monthly; features such as Sponsored Agents are still tests.
We have not run ChatGPT ads ourselves. This page is based on OpenAI's announcements, help centre and developer documentation, and news reporting.
What might this look like in practice?
Consider an illustrative bike shop chain, Brellowick Cycles, with stores in two cities. Monthly prompt tests showed ChatGPT naming it for “best bike shop for servicing” but never for e-bike questions, where two national retailers dominated. Instead of buying ads across the board, the marketing lead ran a small product feed campaign for its e-bike range only, with landing pages comparing models by range and price. Organic referrals from chatgpt.com kept rising slowly from servicing questions. The e-bike ads brought sales at a cost similar to search ads, and the team kept publishing e-bike guides to earn organic mentions over time.
