What Is Answer Engine Optimization, and How Is It Different From SEO?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making your content and your brand the answer that search engines and AI assistants give, not just one of the links they list. It differs from SEO in its goal and its measure of success. SEO aims for high rankings and clicks. AEO aims to be quoted, cited or recommended inside the answer itself, in Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and similar tools. In practice the two overlap heavily: crawlable, helpful, well-structured content serves both. AEO adds answer-first writing, attention to third-party sources that engines trust, and measurement of mentions and citations across engines. For most businesses it is an extension of SEO, not a replacement.

What does AEO stand for in SEO?

AEO stands for answer engine optimization. In SEO conversations it refers to optimizing for results where the search engine or assistant answers the question directly. It sits alongside related terms:

Term Stands for Usual emphasis
SEO Search engine optimization Rankings and clicks in search results
AEO Answer engine optimization Being the direct answer: snippets, AI answers, voice
GEO Generative engine optimization Being included and cited in AI-generated answers
AIO / LLMO AI or large language model optimization Similar to GEO, used less consistently

The terms overlap and are used loosely; what matters is the outcome you are aiming for. How they relate is covered in the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO.

What is an answer engine?

An answer engine is a system that responds to a question with an answer, rather than a list of documents to read. The idea is old. Early question-answering search services tried it, and tools such as Wolfram|Alpha computed answers from structured data. Google moved towards it with featured snippets and knowledge panels, and voice assistants read single answers aloud. Today the main answer engines are generative:

  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, which summarise from Google's index;
  • ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini with web search, which search and then write an answer;
  • Perplexity, which describes itself as an answer engine and shows its sources prominently;
  • Microsoft Copilot, built on Bing;
  • voice assistants, now largely powered by the same generative models.

What they share is that the user may get what they need without visiting a website, which is why being the source of the answer, and being named in it, matters.

How is AEO different from SEO?

Aspect SEO AEO
Goal Rank high; win the click Be quoted, cited or recommended in the answer
Unit of success A position for a keyword A mention or citation for a question
Where it happens Search results pages AI Overviews, AI Mode, assistants, snippets, voice
Content focus Pages that satisfy a query and earn links Passages that answer a question directly and can stand alone
Off-site focus Links Mentions and reviews in sources engines cite
Measurement Rankings, clicks, traffic Mention, recommendation and citation rates across repeated runs
Variability Rankings fairly stable Answers vary between runs and users

The foundations are shared. An answer engine can only use pages it can crawl, index and trust, and most answer engines retrieve pages through search indexes. So technical SEO, helpful content and authority still come first.

Is AEO just SEO rebranded, or does it require a different approach?

Partly rebranded, partly different. Many tactics sold as AEO are long-standing SEO practice: clear headings, direct answers, good structure, helpful content and structured data. Google's own guidance on its AI features says as much, describing good SEO practice as the foundation. It also says special files, chunking and inauthentic mentions are unnecessary.

What genuinely changes:

  • The target is the answer, not the ranking. A page can rank first and not be quoted, or rank lower and be cited, because engines pick passages that answer each part of a question.
  • Third-party sources carry more weight. Recommendations lean heavily on reviews, comparison articles and publications, so off-site work shifts from link counts to presence in the sources engines cite.
  • More engines. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot use different indexes from Google, so visibility has to be measured separately for each one.
  • Measurement is different. You need repeated runs of fixed questions, not a rank tracker.
  • The brand has to be in the answer. An engine can use your information without naming you; writing facts in a way that carries your name matters more.

So AEO does not need a separate team or a new set of tricks. It needs SEO work aimed at a different outcome, plus measurement that fits it.

Is AEO just voice search optimization?

No, though it grew up alongside it. When voice assistants and featured snippets were the main answer formats, AEO mostly meant writing concise answers that could be read aloud or shown in a snippet. Today the main answer engines are generative AI systems that combine several sources, cite them and hold conversations. Voice is one way people reach those systems, not the whole of AEO. Voice-specific advice, such as keeping spoken answers short and local listings accurate, is covered in how to optimize content for voice search answers.

Is AEO effectively SEO, and do paid results influence what ChatGPT recommends?

Effectively, AEO is SEO with a different scoreboard, as above. On paid results: advertising does not buy organic recommendations in the major answer engines, according to their operators. OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in the US in early 2026 and had extended them to more than 60 countries by September 2026. It states that ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives, and that ads are shown separately from answers and labelled. Google shows ads in and around AI Overviews in some markets, also labelled as sponsored. Perplexity tested sponsored follow-up questions but dropped advertising in February 2026.

What paid activity can do is indirect. Advertising builds brand awareness and search demand, and sponsored content that is clearly disclosed may be read by engines like any other page. But an ad placement itself is not a way into the organic answer. Studies of brand visibility in AI Overviews have found only weak correlations with branded ad spend.

What does AEO work look like in practice?

  1. List the questions your buyers ask, in their words.
  2. Check the answers engines give now, and the sources they cite.
  3. Write or rewrite pages so each question gets a direct answer in the first sentences, with specific facts.
  4. Keep facts consistent across your site, listings and profiles.
  5. Earn presence in the reviews, articles and directories cited for your questions.
  6. Make pages accessible to AI crawlers, with content in the HTML.
  7. Measure mentions, recommendations and citations over repeated runs, and repeat monthly.

Most of those steps are also good SEO. The differences are steps 2, 5 and 7.

What do people ask about AEO?

Is AEO replacing SEO?

No. Answer engines depend on search indexes and the same quality signals. AEO changes what you aim for and measure, not the foundations.

Do I need an AEO agency?

Not necessarily. A capable SEO team can add AEO with better briefs, off-site targeting and new measurement.

Does AEO work for local businesses?

Yes. For local questions, answers draw heavily on business listings and reviews, so accurate profiles and genuine reviews are central.

How do I know if AEO is working?

Track how often you are mentioned, recommended and cited for a fixed set of questions across engines over time, alongside leads from AI referrals.
