Why Does AI Put My Law Firm in the Wrong Practice Area?
AI puts a law firm in the wrong practice area when the evidence across the web points somewhere else. The homepage may be vague, or old pages may describe a former focus. Directory and Business Profile categories may be generic, and reviews and press may mostly mention one type of matter. Some practice areas share vocabulary: elder law and estate planning, bankruptcy and debt relief, civil rights and personal injury. When a firm does not say plainly what it handles, whom it represents and at what scale, assistants fill the gap with the closest familiar category. The fix is to state practice areas, side and scope in consistent terms everywhere assistants look, then remove or update the pages that say otherwise.
Why does it happen?
| Cause | Example |
|---|---|
| Legacy content | Old blog posts and pages from a former focus still rank and get cited |
| Generic homepage | "Trusted legal counsel for your family and business" says nothing specific |
| Directory categories | Legal directory profiles list only the original practice area |
| Business Profile category | Primary category set to "Law firm" or to the old practice area |
| Shared vocabulary | "Medicaid", "trusts" and "wills" appear on both elder law and estate planning sites |
| Unstated side | Employment and insurance firms rarely say whom they represent |
| Unstated scope | A firm known from class action press may handle individual claims too |
| Reviews | Most reviews describe one type of matter |
How do you check what assistants think?
Ask directly and indirectly:
- "What does [firm] do?" and "What kind of law does [firm] practise?"
- "Best [practice area] lawyer in [city]", for each area you handle
- "Does [firm] handle [specific matter]?"
- "Does [firm] represent employees or employers?" where side matters
Run each two or three times in ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot. Record the practice areas attributed to you, whether you appear for each area, and the sources cited. The cited sources usually show where the wrong picture comes from.
What fixes apply to every firm?
- Say it on the homepage: the practice areas, whom you represent, and where, in the first lines.
- Give each practice area its own page with the matters handled, typical process and fee arrangements.
- Update directory profiles so their categories match the practice areas you actually handle.
- Set Business Profile categories so the primary category reflects the main practice, with secondary categories for the others.
- Update or redirect legacy pages that describe a former focus.
- Ask every client for an honest review in their own words, and publish case results in the areas you want to be known for, where your bar's rules permit.
- Follow advertising rules. Only call yourself a specialist where your bar permits it, such as through recognised certification.
Why do AI assistants recommend estate planning lawyers instead of elder law attorneys for Medicaid planning?
Estate planning sites use many of the same words as elder law sites: trusts, wills, powers of attorney, Medicaid. There are many more estate planning firms, so their pages dominate. Elder law attorneys should publish Medicaid planning pages that go beyond general estate planning. Cover the five-year look-back period for long-term care Medicaid, spend-down options, the state's specific rules, and crisis planning when a nursing home admission is imminent. Mention credentials such as Certified Elder Law Attorney status where held, and membership of elder law associations.
Can AI assistants distinguish civil-rights lawyers from personal injury attorneys in excessive-force searches?
Often not, because many personal injury firms also advertise for police misconduct cases. Civil rights firms should state that they bring claims under 42 U.S.C. § 1983. They should explain issues such as qualified immunity, and list the case types they handle: excessive force, false arrest, deaths in custody. Case results and press coverage of specific civil rights matters, where public, help assistants separate the two.
Can AI search distinguish a bankruptcy lawyer from a debt relief company?
Sometimes poorly, and the law adds to the confusion. US bankruptcy attorneys who help consumers must describe themselves as a "debt relief agency" in advertising under the Bankruptcy Code. Its wording overlaps with the "debt relief" language debt settlement companies use in their marketing. Keep the required statement, but surround it with clear content. Make plain that you are a law firm, which chapters you file, what the process involves, and how bankruptcy differs from debt settlement. Debt settlement companies cannot represent clients in bankruptcy court, and an answer that confuses the two can send people the wrong way.
Why do AI assistants describe my real estate law firm as a general practice instead of a land-use firm?
"Real estate law" usually suggests closings and disputes. Land-use and zoning work needs its own vocabulary: entitlements, rezoning, variances, subdivision approvals, planning commission and zoning board hearings. Publish a land-use page that names the municipalities where you appear and the project types you handle. Where clients allow it, describe approved projects, which are often public record. Update directory categories to include land use and zoning.
Can AI assistants tell whether an employment law firm represents workers or employers?
Only if the firm says so. Many employment firm sites describe "employment law" without stating a side. Put it in the first line: "We represent employees" or "We advise employers". Repeat it on every practice page and profile. Associations signal side too. The National Employment Lawyers Association, for example, is an association of lawyers who represent workers. Reviews from clients on your side reinforce it.
What does it mean when AI recommends a consumer-protection lawyer only for class actions, not individual claims?
It usually means the firm's visible record is class action settlements and press, so assistants associate it with large cases. If you handle individual claims, such as debt collection harassment, credit reporting errors, lemon law or robocalls, publish pages for each. Explain that several consumer protection laws, including the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and the Fair Credit Reporting Act, allow successful consumers to recover attorney's fees. Many people assume a lawyer is unaffordable for a small claim.
Why does ChatGPT still describe my law firm as a family law practice after we added personal injury?
Three things slow the change. Years of family law pages, reviews and directory entries outweigh a few new pages. Directory and Business Profile categories may still say family law. And answers based on a model's training data lag until newer models are released, while search-based answers can update within weeks. Build personal injury pages with the same depth as your family law ones, and update every profile's categories. Keep asking every client for an honest review in their own words; as personal injury matters close, those reviews will start to reflect the new work. Publish case results where permitted. Expect search-based answers to change first. The same staleness behind outdated prices is covered in why AI quotes old prices, plans or pricing tiers.
What do people ask about law firm practice areas in AI answers?
Does schema markup fix practice area confusion?
It can support clear pages, for example by marking the firm and its attorneys. But assistants mainly use visible text and third-party profiles, so fix those first.
Should a firm with many practice areas have separate websites?
Usually not. One site with a clear page per practice area, and a homepage that lists them, works better than splitting authority.
How can we report a wrong description?
Use the assistant's feedback tool, with a link to the page that shows the correct practice areas. Then fix the sources it cited.
How long does it take for assistants to reflect a new practice area?
Search-based answers can change within weeks of clear pages and updated profiles. Answers from a model's own knowledge may take months.
