Why Does ChatGPT Cite My Homepage but Not My Product Pages?
ChatGPT often cites your homepage rather than your product pages partly by design. In May 2026, ChatGPT began showing brand names as clickable links inside answers, and those links usually point to a brand's homepage. Similarweb found homepage visits rose from about 26–29% of ChatGPT's referral traffic to about 62–63% afterwards. That is a brand link, not a verdict on your product pages. If those pages are never used as sources, the causes are usually on your side. The pages may be hard to crawl, thin or duplicated, or less clear than the homepage. Or the questions being asked are about your brand rather than a specific product. The fix is to make each product or service page the clearest, most specific answer to the questions it should win.
Is it a brand link or a source citation?
Look at where the link appears:
- A brand name linked in the text usually goes to the homepage. It tells the reader who you are, not where a fact came from.
- A source citation beside a claim, or in the sources panel, shows which page supplied the information.
If product-specific claims, such as prices or features, are sourced to your homepage or to third-party sites, your product pages are losing as sources.
Why are product pages not cited as sources?
- They are hard to crawl. Key text loads with scripts, sits in tabs or appears only in images. Most AI crawlers do not run JavaScript.
- They are thin. A title, a price and a "buy" button give assistants nothing to quote.
- They duplicate each other or the manufacturer's description, so a retailer or marketplace page wins.
- They are blocked or not indexed. Robots rules, noindex tags or canonical tags point elsewhere.
- The homepage says it better. If the homepage summarises what each product does more clearly than the product pages, assistants use it.
- The question is about the brand. "Is [brand] good?" is answered from brand-level sources.
How can I check whether AI engines cite my appraisal firm's service pages or only its homepage?
- List your service pages and, for each, the questions it should answer, such as "What does a divorce property appraisal cost in [county]?" or "How long does an estate appraisal take?"
- Run those questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI features, several times each.
- Record every cited URL, separating brand links from source citations.
- Check Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report, which shows which pages Copilot cites.
- Check Search Console's generative AI performance report for AI Overview and AI Mode impressions by page.
- Check server logs for requests from ChatGPT-User and similar fetchers, which show pages opened to answer live questions.
If only the homepage appears, compare each service page with whatever is cited instead. The difference is usually specificity: fees, turnaround, qualifications and the situations each service covers.
Why does Perplexity cite a home healthcare agency’s job page instead of its care service page?
Job pages are often more detailed and more locally specific than service pages. A listing for a "home care aide in [town]" names the town, the care tasks, the hours and the types of clients. It is also copied to job boards, which multiplies it. A service page that says only "compassionate care for your loved ones" gives much less to use. To fix it:
- Make service pages as specific as the job ads: care types, conditions supported, hours, towns covered, how assessments work and payment options, including insurance or public funding where relevant.
- Show licensing or accreditation for the agency.
- Link job pages to service pages, so the relationship is clear.
- Mark expired job listings as expired or remove them, and keep job posting dates accurate.
How do you make product and service pages the cited source?
- Open with a direct description: what the product or service is, who it suits and what it costs.
- Add specifics in text: specifications, sizes, turnaround times, areas served, qualifications.
- Answer the questions buyers ask about that product in short sections.
- Make the page readable without scripts and check the page source for key text.
- Use self-referencing canonical tags, and make sure product pages are indexed.
- Link from the homepage and category pages to each product page with descriptive anchor text.
- Differentiate from resellers by adding information only you have: sizing advice, compatibility, use cases, care.
- If you sell products, share a product feed through ChatGPT's merchant programme or your commerce platform, with one row per item and its product-page URL.

What might an illustrative case look like?
Consider an illustrative outdoor furniture brand whose ChatGPT citations nearly all point to its homepage. Tracking shows the homepage appears as a brand link in most answers. For questions about a specific product, such as "Is the [collection] dining set weatherproof?", sources are two retailers and a review site. The brand's own product pages load descriptions in a script-driven tab and repeat the retailers' copy. The brand renders descriptions in HTML and adds material specifications, weatherproofing details and care guidance. It also answers common questions on each product page. A month later, its product pages are cited as sources for several product questions, while the homepage continues to carry the brand link.
What do people ask about homepage and product page citations?
Is a homepage link from ChatGPT a bad thing?
No. It is valuable, since it means you were named. It just is not evidence that your product pages are trusted sources.
Should product pages have FAQs?
Real questions with direct answers help, whether in an FAQ section or woven into the page.
Can I make ChatGPT link to a product page instead of the homepage?
For products you sell, partly. You can apply to share a product feed with OpenAI, and Shopify and Etsy catalogues are already connected. Each item's URL in the feed is where ChatGPT's shopping results send shoppers, so product results can point to your product pages. Inline brand links and source citations cannot be steered: product pages are cited when they are the best source for the fact being stated.
Why do retailers get cited instead of our product pages?
Usually because their pages rank better or contain more detail. Add information only you can provide.
