Why Does Perplexity Recommend Another Emergency Electrician When My Business Is Open Now?

Perplexity recommends another emergency electrician because it cannot see who is available right now. It infers availability from what is published: hours in Yelp's business data, which Perplexity has drawn on for local answers since 2024, other directory listings and your website, "24/7 emergency service" statements, service areas, and reviews that mention fast response. If your listings show 8am to 5pm office hours while you take emergency calls all night, the answer will say you are closed. It will name a competitor whose pages say "24/7". The same applies to ChatGPT and emergency plumbers. The fix is to publish accurate emergency hours, response areas and call-out terms in text, consistently, on your website and every profile.

What do assistants use to judge "open now" and "can come today"?

Signal Where it comes from
Opening hours Business Profile, Yelp, directories and your website
Emergency statement "24/7 emergency electrician" on your site and profiles
Service area Towns or postcodes listed in text
Response time Stated typical response, such as "usually within two hours in [area]"
Reviews "Came out at 11pm", "fixed it the same afternoon"
Directory presence Home services marketplaces and local directories that show availability

Perplexity shows its sources, so you can see which of these it relied on. Often the competitor it names has a page titled "24 Hour Emergency Electrician in [town]", and a directory profile marked as open 24 hours.

How do you check?

Ask the questions a customer would ask in an emergency, at different times of day:

  • "Emergency electrician near me open now"
  • "Electrician who can come tonight in [town]"
  • "Power out in half the house, who can come today in [town]?"
  • "24 hour electrician [town]"
  • "Burning smell from outlet, emergency electrician [town]"

Run them in Perplexity, ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Mode, with the location set. Include runs outside office hours, since some answers check stated hours against the current time. Record who is named, what the answer says about your hours and availability, and the sources cited. Then look at those sources: your Business Profile hours, directory listings and website.

Why might your business look closed?

  • Office hours on your profiles. Many trades list the hours someone answers the office phone, not the hours they respond to emergencies.
  • Emergency service only in an image or banner. A graphic saying "24/7" is not readable text.
  • No emergency page. The homepage covers everything, so there is no page matching "emergency electrician [town]".
  • Inconsistent hours across Google, Yelp, directories and your site, so assistants cannot tell which is right.
  • Reviews that do not mention urgency. "Great job on our kitchen lighting" does not help an emergency question.

What should you publish?

  • Accurate hours everywhere. If you respond to emergencies 24 hours a day, set your hours to reflect that where the platform allows, and only if someone genuinely answers. If emergency cover is limited, state it: "Emergency call-outs until 10pm, seven days a week".
  • An emergency page for each main service area, covering what counts as an emergency, typical response times, the call-out fee and after-hours rates, and the phone number.
  • Service areas in text: towns, neighbourhoods or postcodes.
  • Licence details: your state or local electrical contractor licence number, since customers ask whether an emergency electrician is licensed.
  • Consistent listings: the same hours, phone number and emergency description on your Business Profile, Yelp, and the directories cited for your area. Yelp matters more now that it licenses its reviews and business details to OpenAI for ChatGPT's local answers.
  • Reviews after emergency jobs. Ask every customer, emergency call-outs included, for an honest review while the job is fresh; many will mention the time and speed of the call-out unprompted. Ask on Google or another platform that allows review requests, never on Yelp, which forbids asking for reviews; keep the Yelp profile complete and reply to the reviews you get. Google does not allow asking for specific content.

Be accurate. Claiming 24/7 cover you cannot provide leads to missed calls and bad reviews. Those reviews then shape future answers.

What should an emergency page contain?

A useful emergency page answers the questions a worried customer asks in the first minute. An outline that works for most trades:

  1. A first line with the promise and the area: "Emergency electrician in [town] and [nearby towns], call-outs until midnight every day."
  2. What counts as an emergency: power loss, burning smells, sparking outlets, tripping breakers that will not reset, storm damage.
  3. What to do while waiting, such as switching off at the consumer unit or breaker panel, with a safety note.
  4. Typical response times by area, stated honestly.
  5. Prices: the call-out fee, after-hours rates and what is included.
  6. Licence and insurance details.
  7. Recent emergency reviews, quoted with permission.
  8. The phone number, in text rather than only in a button.

This gives assistants a single, clear source for every part of an urgent question.

How does ChatGPT recommend an emergency plumber who can come today?

ChatGPT searches the web and local data for plumbers in the area, and looks for evidence of same-day or emergency service. That includes pages mentioning emergencies, hours, service areas and reviews about quick response. In a normal answer it cannot see a tradesperson's diary or confirm that anyone is free; if the user opens the Thumbtack app inside ChatGPT, recommendations come from Thumbtack's own pro data, so a complete Thumbtack profile is a second route into these answers. So it names plumbers whose published information suggests they can come today, and usually adds advice to call ahead and confirm.

Plumbers should publish the same things as electricians:

  • emergency pages for burst pipes, leaks, blocked drains and no hot water;
  • stated call-out fees and after-hours rates;
  • service areas in text;
  • accurate hours on all profiles;
  • reviews that mention how quickly they arrived.

If you offer online booking with same-day slots, say so on the page. Plumbers often lose these answers to marketplaces and national brands with emergency pages for every town. A specific local page with real response details is the independent's best counter.

How Perplexity chooses local businesses more generally is covered in how Perplexity chooses which local businesses to recommend. When an assistant sends customers to a competitor after one of your branches closes, see why AI recommends a competitor instead of a still-open location.

What might an illustrative check show?

Consider an illustrative electrician in a mid-sized town who answers emergency calls until midnight. Its Business Profile shows 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. At 8pm on a Saturday, Perplexity's answer to "emergency electrician near me open now" names two competitors. One of them has a "24 Hour Emergency Electrician" page and a directory listing marked open 24 hours. The electrician changes its profile hours to reflect its real call-out hours and adds an emergency page with response times and after-hours rates. It makes Yelp and two directory listings consistent, and asks every customer for an honest review in their own words. Three weeks later, evening runs name it in some answers, with its hours stated correctly.

What do people ask about emergency services and AI answers?

Do people really use AI assistants in an emergency?

Some do, though many still search Google or call someone they know. Surveys show growing use of AI for local recommendations, and customers often check the answer before calling. Accurate hours help in either case.

Should we list ourselves as open 24 hours?

Only if someone genuinely answers and can send help at any hour. Otherwise, list your real emergency hours.

Does being on home services marketplaces help?

It can add sources that assistants cite. Keep your own site and profiles as the most complete and consistent source.

How often should we recheck?

Monthly, at different times of day, and after changing hours or service areas.
