Why Does Perplexity Recommend Overseas Suppliers Instead of Our Domestic Industrial Manufacturing Company?

Perplexity recommends overseas suppliers because it answers from the pages it can find and read, and overseas suppliers publish far more of them. Exporters and B2B marketplaces post thousands of English product pages with materials, tolerances, sizes and minimum order quantities. Many domestic manufacturers have a short website, capabilities in a PDF and a quote form. Buyers' questions often lack a country qualifier, so the answer reflects whoever has the most matching pages. Some manufacturers' security settings also block Perplexity's crawler without anyone noticing. A domestic manufacturer can compete by publishing readable capability pages and making its domestic advantages explicit. Those advantages include lead time, logistics, certifications and compliance.

Why do overseas suppliers dominate?

Reason What Perplexity sees
Page volume Marketplace and exporter pages for every part, material and size
Specific specifications Tables of tolerances, materials, finishes and order quantities that match detailed questions
Questions without a country "Precision aluminium extrusion supplier" has no reason to prefer your country
Thin domestic sites "We provide quality manufacturing solutions" with capabilities in a PDF
Quote-only pricing No indication of order sizes or lead times
Crawler blocked A firewall or bot setting stops PerplexityBot from reaching the site

Perplexity shows its sources, so you can see exactly which pages it relied on. That makes the problem easier to diagnose than in assistants that show fewer sources.

How do you test it?

Write questions in three forms for your main processes and parts:

  • Plain: "[Part or process] manufacturer", such as "custom sheet metal enclosures manufacturer".
  • Domestic: "[Part or process] manufacturer in the USA" or "domestic supplier of [part]".
  • Requirement-led: "AS9100 certified machine shop in the Midwest", "ITAR registered precision machining", "low minimum order injection moulding with two-week lead time".

Run each two or three times in Perplexity, and in ChatGPT and Google's AI Mode for comparison. Record the suppliers named, their country, whether they are manufacturers or marketplaces, and the cited sources. Expect plain questions to go overseas more often than requirement-led ones; the requirement-led questions are where a domestic manufacturer usually has something overseas suppliers cannot match.

Is your site readable to Perplexity?

Check three things before anything else:

  1. robots.txt: confirm PerplexityBot is not disallowed. Perplexity says PerplexityBot is used to surface and link sites in its answers, not to train foundation models.
  2. Firewall and bot settings: if you use a CDN or web application firewall, allow Perplexity's published crawler IP addresses. Many manufacturers' sites sit behind default bot protection that nobody has reviewed.
  3. Content in HTML: capabilities, equipment lists and certifications should be on the page itself, not only in PDFs or images. Most AI crawlers do not run JavaScript, so content loaded by scripts may also be missed.

What should a domestic manufacturer publish?

Capability pages

One page per process or product family, with:

  • materials handled and part size ranges;
  • tolerances and finishes;
  • typical order volumes, including minimums;
  • typical lead times for prototypes and production;
  • equipment, briefly;
  • industries served, with example parts where clients allow it.

Certifications and compliance

State certifications in text with the registrar: ISO 9001, AS9100 for aerospace, IATF 16949 for automotive, ISO 13485 for medical devices. If you are registered under ITAR for defence articles, or can support Buy American or Berry Amendment requirements, say so. These are questions where overseas suppliers often cannot compete.

The domestic advantages, stated plainly

Buyers comparing suppliers may ask about landed cost, lead time and supply risk. Explain your lead times, shipping regions, inventory programmes and engineering support in time zone. Do not overclaim. In the US, an unqualified "Made in USA" claim must meet the Federal Trade Commission's "all or virtually all" standard. Describe origin accurately, such as "machined in Ohio from imported bar stock".

Directory and association presence

Keep industrial directory profiles complete and consistent with your site. Thomasnet is the obvious example in North America. List with trade associations and your regional manufacturing extension partnership where relevant. Check whether they appear among the sources Perplexity cites in your own tests; if they do, a complete profile there is one of the quickest fixes.

Evidence

Publish case studies with part types, volumes and outcomes, such as a lead time reduced from 12 weeks to 3. Specific numbers are more citable than general claims.

Other reasons a B2B company is passed over are covered in why AI recommends other B2B firms instead of yours. Country-level errors in answers are covered in why AI answers get product availability by country wrong.

What might an illustrative test show?

Consider an illustrative sheet metal fabricator in Wisconsin. For "custom sheet metal enclosures manufacturer", Perplexity names three overseas exporters and a marketplace, citing their product pages. For "sheet metal enclosure manufacturer in the USA", it names two domestic competitors, citing Thomasnet profiles and their capability pages. The fabricator's own site turns out to block PerplexityBot through its firewall's default bot setting, and its capabilities sit in a PDF. It allows the crawler, publishes pages for enclosures, laser cutting and powder coating with sizes, gauges, lead times and its ISO 9001 certificate, and updates its Thomasnet profile. Two months later, it appears in some domestic and requirement-led answers. Plain questions still go mostly overseas.

What do people ask about domestic suppliers and AI search?

Should we publish prices?

Full prices are rarely practical in custom manufacturing. Publishing order ranges, lead times and what drives cost gives assistants and buyers enough to shortlist you.

Do buyers really use Perplexity to find suppliers?

Some engineers and buyers use it for early research, because it shows sources. Results should be tested in the assistants your buyers report using.

Will we ever win plain questions without a country?

Sometimes, for specialised processes where few suppliers publish details. Focus first on domestic and requirement-led questions, where you have a real advantage.

Does a "Made in USA" page help?

Yes, if the claim is accurate and specific. It gives assistants a clear statement to cite for domestic supplier questions.
