AWR Review: Tracking Brand Mentions and Citations in ChatGPT and Perplexity
Advanced Web Ranking, or AWR, treats ChatGPT and Perplexity like search engines. For each tracked keyword, it records the sources each answer cites, your position among them, and whether your brand is mentioned. It shows these next to your Google rankings, AI Overviews and AI Mode. Its Brand Intelligence module maps how ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini see your brand, by topic. AI tracking is included in every plan, from $139 a month, and billed in keyword units. ChatGPT and Perplexity cost one unit per keyword, and Google's AI features two. AWR suits SEO teams and agencies that want AI citations inside a mature rank tracker, with unlimited users and projects.
What does AWR track in ChatGPT and Perplexity?
According to AWR's help centre:
- Cited sources as rankings. For ChatGPT, AWR retrieves every website cited in the response and tracks your position within that list of sources, with changes between updates. For Perplexity, it records the URLs in the answer's Sources section and your position among them.
- Top sites and snapshots. Which sites are cited most across your keywords, and a snapshot of each answer.
- Mentions versus citations. AWR separates mentions, where the answer names your brand, from citations, where it uses and links to your site. Brand references are generated automatically, so brand-name variants are caught.
- AI versus organic overlap. A metric showing whether the same URL appears in both Google's organic results and the AI answer for a keyword, which tells you whether your SEO work is feeding AI visibility.
Google AI Mode can be tracked in more than 170 countries, on desktop or mobile. ChatGPT tracking is available in a defined list of countries, so check yours before planning a multi-market set-up.
What does Brand Intelligence add?
Brand Intelligence looks at your brand rather than keywords. It shows how ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini understand your brand: the topics they associate with it, the competing brands they name, and the websites they cite when they mention you. It runs by topic, with a Web Search Mode, on by default, that makes each model check live web results rather than rely on training data alone.
It is also the most expensive part of AWR in units. AWR's guide charges 50 units per model, per topic, per update with Web Search Mode on, and 3 units with it off. Ten topics on one model, updated weekly, uses 2,000 units a month. The same ten topics on all four models, weekly, would use 8,000, more than the Pro plan's entire allowance. Consider monthly updates for topics that change slowly.
How much does it cost?
As listed on AWR's pricing page, with 10% off for annual billing:
| Plan | Price | Keyword units | Notable extras |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pro | $139/mo | 7,000 | AI visibility, AI citations and mentions, SERP features, market share |
| Agency | $279/mo | 14,500 | Unlimited forecasts, 1-hour on-demand updates, custom dashboards, Looker Studio, developer API |
| Enterprise | $699/mo | 35,500 | Unlimited scheduled reports, cross-project features |
| Ent Plus 50k | $980/mo | 50,000 | All Enterprise features, Keyword Research add-on, SSO, custom contracts, dedicated account manager |

How do keyword units add up?
AWR's formula is keywords × search engines × frequency × depth. A keyword tracked weekly on one engine uses one unit; daily tracking costs seven times as much. ChatGPT and Perplexity count as standard engines at one unit per keyword, while AI Overviews and AI Mode count double.
| Set-up | Units a month | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| 500 keywords, ChatGPT + Perplexity, daily | 500 × 2 × 7 = 7,000 | Pro |
| 1,000 keywords, ChatGPT + Perplexity, weekly | 1,000 × 2 = 2,000 | Pro, with room for Google |
| 1,000 keywords, Google + AI Overviews, weekly | 1,000 × 2 = 2,000 | Pro |
| 1,000 keywords, ChatGPT + Perplexity + AI Mode, daily | 1,000 × 4 × 7 = 28,000 | Enterprise |
The first row is about 30,000 AI answers a month for $139, under half a cent each, which is very cheap for daily tracking. The catch is that Brand Intelligence and Google's AI features draw on the same pool, so plan the whole project before choosing a plan.
Keywords or prompts?
AWR was built for keywords, and its AI tracking inherits that model. You can add full questions as keywords, and you should: "what is the best CRM for a small law firm" produces a very different ChatGPT answer from "CRM law firm". Keep a separate group of natural buyer questions for ChatGPT and Perplexity, and a keyword group for Google, so each report reads cleanly.
What are the limits?
- Keyword-style tracking. Answers are tracked per query, not per conversation, and reports treat citations like rankings.
- Engines. Keyword tracking covers ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews and AI Mode. Claude and Gemini appear in Brand Intelligence, not in keyword tracking.
- ChatGPT countries. Available in a listed set of countries, not everywhere AWR tracks Google.
- Brand Intelligence cost. Frequent updates across several models use units quickly.
- Recommendations. AWR reports what is happening; turning it into content and outreach is up to you.
Who is it for?
- Good fit: SEO agencies and in-house teams that already track rankings at scale, want AI citations beside them, and value unlimited users and white-label reports.
- Reasonable fit: teams wanting cheap daily ChatGPT and Perplexity citation tracking for hundreds of queries.
- Poor fit: teams needing Claude or Gemini answers tracked per question, or built-in content recommendations.
Dedicated trackers with different strengths are covered in the OtterlyAI review, the Peec AI review and the Gauge review. Brand listening is covered in the Brandwatch review.
How should you set it up?
- Add ChatGPT and Perplexity from the AI search tab of the search engine wizard, choosing a supported country.
- Create a question group of 50 to 200 buyer questions, separate from your Google keywords.
- Choose frequency by value: daily for the top questions, weekly for the rest.
- Turn on brand references and add competitors, so mentions and citations are counted for everyone.
- Run Brand Intelligence monthly on your main topics, with Web Search Mode on.
- Review the AI versus organic overlap each month, to see which ranking pages are also cited.
What might this look like in practice?
Consider an illustrative travel company, Pebblecrest, already tracking 3,000 Google keywords in AWR. It added 300 buyer questions on ChatGPT and Perplexity, updated weekly, using 600 more units a month. Within a month, the reports showed that Perplexity cited its destination guides often, while ChatGPT cited two large review sites instead. The overlap metric showed that its best-ranking Google pages were rarely the ones AI answers cited. It rewrote three guides to answer questions directly, and moved its 50 most valuable questions to daily tracking.
