Can ChatGPT Recommend Handmade Products Without Standardized GTINs?

Yes. A GTIN is not required for ChatGPT's shopping results. OpenAI's product feed specification lists GTIN as optional, says to omit it when none is assigned, and warns against inventing a part number to fill the gap. The nine required fields are item ID, title, description, product URL, brand, seller name, image, availability and price. Etsy and Shopify catalogues are already integrated with ChatGPT, so many handmade sellers are included without a separate application. Without a GTIN, ChatGPT relies on the words and attributes you provide, so handmade products get matched through clear titles, detailed descriptions, materials, category, the people they suit, and price. ChatGPT shopping is currently live in the US.

Why don't handmade products need GTINs?

GTINs identify manufactured products sold by many retailers, so a system can tell that two listings are the same item. A one-off ceramic bowl or a custom portrait has no such twin, so there is nothing to match, and buying GTINs for one-off pieces adds cost without helping any system. OpenAI's specification reflects that:

Field Requirement For handmade products
gtin Optional; omit if unassigned Leave empty
mpn Optional; do not invent one to replace a missing GTIN Leave empty unless you really assign part numbers
brand Required Your shop or maker name, as shown on the product page
seller_name Required The business selling the item
item_id Required, stable Your own SKU or listing ID

If you send ChatGPT a Google-format feed, OpenAI accepts it, but in that format a GTIN or MPN is expected unless you set identifier_exists to no, which is the standard way to mark custom and handmade goods.

Can ChatGPT find my handmade gifts when shoppers search by budget and recipient?

It can, if your data says who the gift is for and what it costs. Shoppers ask things like “a handmade gift for a gardener under $50” or “personalised present for a new dad”. OpenAI says ChatGPT matches products to shoppers based on preferences, context and product data. Budget is handled by price; recipient and occasion have to come from your words and attributes:

  • Price is required in the feed, so budget filters work if your price is current.
  • Title should state what the item is and its key trait, such as “Hand-thrown stoneware herb planter, drainage hole, 15 cm”.
  • Description should say who it suits and when it is given, such as gardeners, housewarmings or Mother's Day, in plain sentences.
  • Attributes in OpenAI's specification include product category, material, colour, size, dimensions, age group and gender, all optional but useful for filtering.
  • Personalisation and lead time belong in the description, since custom items often take time to make and assistants may mention it.

Etsy, which launched a ChatGPT app in May 2026 exposing its listings to natural-language questions, has an advantage here: its listings already carry categories, occasions and recipient tags written for gift searches.

How do handmade sellers get into ChatGPT's results?

  • Through Etsy or Shopify. OpenAI says catalogues from both are already integrated, with no application needed.
  • Through a product feed. Other sellers can apply on OpenAI's merchant page to share a feed, which OpenAI says gives more control over how products appear.
  • Through your website. OpenAI says a feed is not required, though a feed gives you more control. Allow OAI-SearchBot and show the product details in the page HTML.

How to submit products is covered in whether you can submit products directly to ChatGPT, and restricted categories in what products are prohibited from ChatGPT commerce results.

What makes handmade listings easier to recommend?

  1. Consistent maker identity. Use the same shop name as the brand on your site, Etsy, social profiles and feed, so ChatGPT connects them.
  2. Specific, honest descriptions with materials, dimensions, care and making process. Avoid vague words like “unique” without saying what makes it so.
  3. Accurate availability. One-off pieces sell out; mark them out of stock quickly so ChatGPT does not recommend items you cannot sell, as covered in why ChatGPT recommends unavailable products.
  4. Variants as variants. Colours or sizes of the same design should share a group ID with separate rows, as OpenAI's specification describes.
  5. Reviews. Honest reviews from buyers, on your shop and marketplaces, help assistants judge quality; ask every customer for a review in their own words, as covered in how reviews on Etsy, Amazon and Shopify shape AI perception.
  6. Good images showing scale and detail, since the image is a required field and appears in results.

What about Google's AI Mode and Gemini?

Google's rules are similar in spirit. Merchant Center's free listings help says a GTIN is required when one has been assigned, and an MPN otherwise. For products with neither, such as custom and handmade goods, Merchant Center uses the identifier_exists attribute set to no, rather than an invented number. Google's shopping results in AI Mode and Gemini draw on this Merchant Center data, so the same work pays off twice: accurate brand, clear titles, detailed descriptions, categories and prices. Shopify stores can sync products to Merchant Center through Google's sales channel app, while marketplace sellers depend on how the marketplace itself shares listings with Google.

The practical rule is the same everywhere: never make up an identifier. A fake GTIN can get listings disapproved on Google and confuses any system that tries to match your item with other products.

What if ChatGPT still does not recommend you?

Ask ChatGPT the questions your buyers ask, with and without your shop name, and note which sellers appear and why, as covered in how to ask ChatGPT why it does not recommend your brand. Common gaps are generic titles, missing recipient or occasion wording, and a shop name that differs between platforms. Purchases from ChatGPT happen on your own site or marketplace, as covered in what ChatGPT Instant Checkout means for retailers.

We have not measured how often ChatGPT recommends handmade items with and without GTINs. This page is based on OpenAI's product feed specification and merchant page, and reports of Etsy's ChatGPT app.

What might this look like in practice?

Consider an illustrative ceramicist, Fernmoss Pottery, selling on Etsy and its own Shopify store. ChatGPT rarely suggested its planters for gift questions. The listings were titled only with product names, such as “Moss No. 3”. The owner rewrote titles to say what each item was and its size, added who each piece suited and common occasions to the descriptions, filled material and dimensions, and used the same shop name everywhere. The planters began appearing in ChatGPT answers to questions like “handmade gift for a gardener under $60”.

What do people ask about handmade products and ChatGPT?

Do I need to buy GTINs for handmade items?

No. OpenAI's specification makes GTIN optional and says to omit it when none is assigned.

What should I put as the brand for handmade goods?

Your shop or maker name, exactly as shown on your product pages.

Are Etsy listings included in ChatGPT shopping?

OpenAI says Etsy catalogues are already integrated with ChatGPT.
