What Does ChatGPT Instant Checkout Mean for Online Retailers?
Less than it did at launch. OpenAI introduced Instant Checkout in September 2025, letting US shoppers buy from Etsy sellers, and later other merchants, without leaving ChatGPT. It was built on the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), developed with Stripe. By 2026 OpenAI had changed course. Its merchant page now says it is moving away from a standalone Instant Checkout experience, and that purchases are completed on merchant-owned websites or apps, with no fees on purchases that start in ChatGPT. Instant Checkout survives only as a beta for select marketplace partners. For most retailers, what matters now is product discovery: getting accurate products into ChatGPT's shopping results and converting visitors on their own site.
How did Instant Checkout change?
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| September 2025 | Instant Checkout launches in the US with Etsy sellers; Shopify merchants to follow; ACP released as an open standard with Stripe |
| October 2025 | Walmart announces shopping through ChatGPT with Instant Checkout |
| Early 2026 | Reports that only about a dozen merchants are live; Walmart ends its pilot and moves to its own Sparky app inside ChatGPT |
| 2026 | OpenAI's merchant page says it is moving away from standalone Instant Checkout in favour of merchant-owned checkout |
Walmart's experience was widely reported: it said Instant Checkout conversion was roughly three times lower than click-through to its own site. Its replacement lets users sign in to a Walmart account inside ChatGPT, with purchases handled in Walmart's systems.
Can shoppers still discover products in ChatGPT after in-chat checkout was removed?
Yes. Shopping discovery is live for ChatGPT users in the US. Shoppers see rich results with images, prices and key details, compare options, and click through to buy on the merchant's site or app. OpenAI says products are matched to shoppers based on their preferences, context and product data.
Products get into those results in three main ways:
- Product feeds. Merchants apply to share a feed through OpenAI's merchant page. Shopify and Etsy catalogues are already integrated, with no application needed. OpenAI says a self-serve merchant platform is planned.
- Crawling. OpenAI says a feed is not required if ChatGPT already crawls your site, but a feed gives more control over how products appear and keeps prices and stock current.
- Google Shopping data. Studies of ChatGPT's product carousels found most products also appear in Google Shopping results, which ChatGPT queries in the background, so a clean Google Merchant Center feed matters for ChatGPT too.
How products are chosen is covered in how ChatGPT ranks shopping results, and why a competitor may appear instead in why ChatGPT recommends competitors instead of your store.
Can ChatGPT recommend products from a merchant that only accepts PayPal?
Yes. With checkout happening on the merchant's own site or app, the payment methods you accept there do not decide whether ChatGPT shows your products. OpenAI's merchant page lists the things that improve placement as feed coverage, rich product details and up-to-date data. It does not mention payment providers.
Payment only mattered for Instant Checkout itself, which needed an integration with a payment provider supporting ACP, starting with Stripe. In October 2025 PayPal also agreed with OpenAI to adopt ACP and bring its merchants' products into ChatGPT. For a PayPal-only merchant today, the practical steps are the same as for anyone else: make sure products are crawlable or in a feed, and that the landing page converts. PayPal has its own route into other AI shopping assistants, such as Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot, through its Store Sync service.
Does Instant Checkout improve a merchant’s placement for the same product in ChatGPT?
It did at launch. OpenAI's September 2025 announcement said that when several merchants sell the same product, ChatGPT considers availability, price, quality, whether the merchant is the primary seller or maker, and whether Instant Checkout is enabled. With Instant Checkout now limited to select marketplace partners, that factor no longer applies to most merchants.
OpenAI's current merchant page instead says richer, current product data helps products surface with more accurate information when shoppers compare options. For the same product sold by several retailers, the factors you control are price, availability, complete product data and, if you make the product, clear signals that you are the primary seller.
What checkout requirements must a merchant meet for Instant Checkout?
For most merchants the answer is now that it is not available. OpenAI's app guidelines describe Instant Checkout as a beta for select marketplace partners, and OpenAI does not invite general applications for it.
When it was open, a merchant needed to:
- Implement ACP's checkout API, so ChatGPT could create, update and complete checkout sessions.
- Connect a payment provider that could accept ACP's delegated payment tokens, starting with Stripe.
- Stay merchant of record, using its own payments, fulfilment, returns and customer support.
- Sell to US shoppers, since checkout launched in the US only.
Shopify and Etsy handled most of this for their merchants. Merchants that build a ChatGPT app today must send buyers to an external checkout on their own domain, sell physical goods, and not charge ChatGPT-specific fees, according to OpenAI's app guidelines.
What does this mean for retailers?
- Discovery is the channel. ChatGPT sends shoppers to your site, so your product pages and checkout must convert visitors who arrive already informed.
- Feed quality matters for placement. Accurate prices, availability, variants, shipping and returns data, on crawlable product pages, in an OpenAI feed if you have one, and in your Google Merchant Center feed.
- Tracking is possible. Many ChatGPT links carry utm_source=chatgpt.com, as covered in how to track ecommerce orders from ChatGPT.
- Stale data hurts. Out-of-date feeds lead to recommendations for products you no longer sell, as covered in why ChatGPT recommends unavailable products.
- Apps are for larger merchants. OpenAI says apps are optional and suit merchants wanting more control over the shopping experience.
- In-chat checkout moved elsewhere. Google's AI Mode and Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot, still offer checkout inside the assistant, through Google's Universal Commerce Protocol and partners such as Shopify, PayPal and Stripe. Good feed data serves all of them.
How to submit products is covered in whether you can submit products directly to ChatGPT, and ChatGPT's wider shopping plans in how ChatGPT is turning into a shopping platform.
We have not run Instant Checkout for a merchant. This page is based on OpenAI's merchant page, app guidelines and launch announcement, and on reporting about Walmart's pilot.
What might this look like in practice?
Consider an illustrative outdoor clothing brand, Fenwery, that had waited for Instant Checkout to open to independent stores. When OpenAI's merchant page changed, the team stopped planning an ACP integration. They applied to share their product feed, fixed missing sizes and colours, added return windows and shipping costs, and tagged ChatGPT traffic in analytics. They also improved the product pages ChatGPT linked to, adding fit guides and delivery dates above the fold. Orders from ChatGPT stayed small but converted better than average, because shoppers arrived having already compared options.
What do people ask about Instant Checkout?
Is ChatGPT Instant Checkout still available?
Only as a beta for select marketplace partners. OpenAI says it is prioritising discovery and merchant-owned checkout.
Does OpenAI charge fees on sales from ChatGPT?
OpenAI says there are no fees on purchases that start in ChatGPT and are completed on your site or app.
Do I need a product feed to appear in ChatGPT shopping?
No, if ChatGPT already crawls your site. A feed gives more control and fresher data.
Is ChatGPT shopping available outside the US?
Not yet. OpenAI says it is live in the US and will expand to more regions.
