How Do You Track Ecommerce Orders That Come Directly From ChatGPT?
Most orders that start in ChatGPT are still placed on your own store, so you track them as referrals. ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to many outbound links. Shopify records the referrer and UTM values on each order, and shows AI channel attribution for orders through Agentic Storefronts. GA4 groups ChatGPT visits in its AI Assistant channel. That covers the orders you can see. Many shoppers read a recommendation in ChatGPT, then search for your brand or type your address later, and those orders arrive as branded search or direct. A post-purchase question fills that gap. Agentic checkout inside Google AI Mode, Gemini or Microsoft Copilot is different again, because it creates orders with no website visit at all. Only channel attribution captures those.
How can an order come from ChatGPT?
| Path | What happens | What you see | How to track it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Click-through | Shopper clicks a product link in ChatGPT and buys on your site | Referrer chatgpt.com, often with utm_source=chatgpt.com |
Order referrer and UTM; GA4 AI Assistant channel |
| In-app browser | Link opens inside the ChatGPT app | Referrer sometimes lost | UTM when present; post-purchase question |
| Delayed visit | Shopper returns later by search or typing your URL | Branded search or direct | Post-purchase question; branded search trends |
| Marketplace | ChatGPT recommends you, shopper buys on Amazon or another retailer | Nothing on your store | Marketplace sales trends; brand search |
| Agentic checkout elsewhere | Purchase completed in AI Mode, Gemini or Copilot through your platform | Order with channel attribution, no session | Sales by channel in your platform |
Can ecommerce brands measure conversions from AI product recommendations?
Partly. You can measure the orders that arrive with a ChatGPT referrer or UTM tag, and you can estimate the rest.
- Measured: orders with
chatgpt.comas referrer or UTM source. These are reliable but undercount, because OpenAI's tag is not added to every link and in-app browsers can drop referrers. - Reported: orders where the customer says ChatGPT or another assistant led them to you. Tally, a form builder, found its onboarding survey showed far more AI-driven sign-ups than its tracked referrals, and the same gap applies to stores.
- Inferred: growth in branded search and direct orders after gains in AI visibility.
Report the measured figure as a floor, and the survey share as a range. Referral tracking in GA4 is covered in depth in how to track ChatGPT and other AI referrals in GA4.
How can Shopify merchants identify sales from ChatGPT?
- Check an order's conversion summary. Shopify's order page shows a summary of the customer's visits before purchase, including the first visit's source and any UTM values.
- Use the marketing reports. Shopify separates the referrer that introduced a customer, the first interaction, from the one used just before the order, the last interaction. Filter for
chatgpt.comin both. A ChatGPT first interaction followed by a later search order is an AI-assisted sale. - Check sales by channel. Shopify says orders from its AI channels appear in the admin with channel or referrer attribution, so you can see which AI channel drove the sale.
- Build a ShopifyQL report for sessions and sales by referrer, filtered to AI sources, as shown in the GA4 guide's ShopifyQL section.
- Add a post-purchase question with an explicit "ChatGPT or another AI assistant" option.
Not every order has a conversion summary. Shopify can only show visits it recorded, so orders started in an in-app browser or after cookie consent was declined may have none. How does ChatGPT agentic commerce change tracking requirements?
It changes where the order happens, and so what evidence exists.
- ChatGPT itself has moved away from in-chat checkout. OpenAI's merchant page describes ChatGPT as a discovery channel, with purchases completed on the merchant's site or app and no fees on those purchases. Instant Checkout remains limited to select marketplace partners. For most stores, ChatGPT orders are still referral orders.
- Other AI surfaces check out directly. Through Shopify's Agentic Storefronts, eligible stores can sell with checkout inside Google AI Mode and Gemini, using Google's Universal Commerce Protocol, and in Microsoft Copilot. Those orders have no browsing session on your site, so GA4's standard tag does not record them. A server-side order integration can send them to GA4, but only with the source you map to that sales channel. Your commerce platform's channel attribution is the primary record.
- Agents may browse for shoppers. When ChatGPT's agent or another browser agent visits your store for a person, it looks like a normal browser session. OpenAI's agent has been observed signing its requests with a
Signature-Agent: "https://chatgpt.com"header under the Web Bot Auth standard, so server logs can identify it.
The practical requirement is to report orders by channel in your commerce platform, not only by traffic source in analytics, and to reconcile the two monthly.
How do you set up tracking before orders arrive?
- Keep UTM parameters through checkout. Some redirects, apps and checkout domains strip query strings. Place a test order from a ChatGPT link and check that the UTM survives to the order's conversion summary.
- Map product identifiers. Use the same product IDs and GTINs in your ChatGPT and Google feeds as in your store, so orders from AI channels can be matched to products and campaigns.
- Standardise the survey answer. Offer fixed options, such as "ChatGPT", "Google AI Mode or Gemini", "Perplexity" and "Other AI assistant", rather than free text.
- Tag customer service contacts. Ask phone and chat enquirers how they found you, and log AI mentions in the CRM.
- Set a baseline. Record current AI-referred orders before changing product data or content, so later changes can be judged.
What should you report?
- Orders and revenue with a ChatGPT referrer or UTM, monthly.
- AI channel orders from Agentic Storefronts or similar integrations.
- Survey share of customers citing AI assistants.
- Conversion rate and order value for AI-referred sessions against other channels.
- New versus returning customers, since AI recommendations often bring first-time buyers.
- Returns by channel, to see whether AI-recommended buyers were well matched to the product.

We have not audited ChatGPT order data across stores ourselves. This page is based on OpenAI's, Shopify's and Google's documentation and published observations.
What might this look like in practice?
Consider an illustrative outdoor clothing store, Gormfen, on Shopify. Its marketing report showed 42 orders in a month with chatgpt.com as the last-interaction referrer. Another 31 had ChatGPT as the first interaction and branded search as the last. Its post-purchase survey, answered by about 40% of buyers, had 9% selecting "ChatGPT or another AI assistant", which pointed to well over 100 AI-influenced orders a month. Separately, 18 orders came through the Google AI Mode channel with no website session. Gormfen reported the 42 tracked orders as the floor, and the survey estimate as the likely total.
What do people ask about tracking ChatGPT orders?
Does ChatGPT tag links to my store?
Many of them. OpenAI's publisher FAQ says ChatGPT includes a utm_source=chatgpt.com parameter, but tests have found links without it, so treat the tag as a partial signal.
Can Shopify show which orders came from ChatGPT?
Yes, through each order's conversion summary, the marketing reports' referrer data, and channel attribution for AI channels.
Why do some ChatGPT orders show as direct?
In-app browsers, copied links and later visits by typing your address lose the referrer.
Do orders placed inside AI Mode or Copilot show in GA4?
Not through the standard tag, because there is no session on your site. Server-side order integrations can send them to GA4 by sales channel; your commerce platform records them by channel either way.
