Can GA4 or Semrush Measure AI Brand Citations?

Only Semrush measures citations; GA4 measures what happens after them. Since May 2026, GA4 groups visits from ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and some other assistants into an AI Assistant channel. But it cannot see mentions that never produce a click, and it counts clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode as organic search. Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit, from $99 a month, runs prompts and records mentions, cited pages, position and sentiment, but only for the prompts it runs. Search Console adds AI Overview and AI Mode impressions by page. None of them sees the whole picture alone. Used together, they show presence, exposure and outcome.

What does GA4 measure about AI?

Visits, not citations. What it offers:

  • The AI Assistant channel. Google's default channel group now includes an AI Assistant channel for arrivals from sources such as ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Copilot and Grok, with the medium "ai-assistant". It was added in May 2026 and does not apply to earlier data.
  • ChatGPT tagging. OpenAI says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links, which helps GA4 attribute them. Analysts have noted it is not added to every link.
  • Behaviour after the click. Landing pages, engagement and conversions for AI-referred sessions, like any other channel.

What can Google Analytics 4 not tell you about AI citations and brand recommendations?

Most of what matters about citations happens before, or instead of, a click:

  • Whether you were mentioned at all. An assistant can recommend your brand without linking to you. GA4 sees nothing unless someone clicks.
  • Delayed and indirect visits. In a vendor study published in July 2026, Profound found that brand site visits rose to 1.5 to 2.5 times the expected baseline in the week after an AI mention. Just one visit in forty or so included an AI referral parameter that analytics could attribute. The rest carried no AI referral tag, so analytics would credit them to other channels, such as direct or search, and most came after the first day: only 42% arrived within 24 hours.
  • Google's AI features. GA4's AI Assistant channel excludes AI Overviews and AI Mode. Their clicks sit in Organic Search, mixed with ordinary results.
  • App traffic. Mobile apps often strip referrers. In one third-party test comparing server logs with GA4, 56 visits from the Gemini iOS app appeared in the logs, but only 5 were attributed to Gemini in GA4. The rest landed in Direct.
  • Which prompt, and what was said. GA4 has no prompt, answer text, position, sentiment or competitor data.
  • Citations of other sites about you. When an assistant cites a review site or comparison article that mentions you, the click goes there, not to you.

What can Semrush measure?

Semrush measures citations directly, by running prompts and reading the answers. According to its help documentation:

  • Prompt Tracking runs your own prompts daily in ChatGPT Search, Google AI Mode and Gemini. It reports AI Visibility, Mentions, Owned Sources, which are citations of your domain, and Average Position, with snapshots of the actual answer.
  • Brand Performance reports, refreshed weekly, analyse Semrush's own question set for your market across ChatGPT, AI Mode, Perplexity and Gemini. They show share of voice, sentiment, citations and the narratives driving how you are described.
  • Position Tracking shows AI Overview appearances and citations for your keywords. When your page is cited in an AI Overview, it records position 1, whatever the organic rank.

The AI Visibility Toolkit costs $99 a month per domain with 25 tracked prompts, and 50 more cost $60 a month. Semrush One, which bundles SEO and AI tracking, starts at $199 with 50 prompts. Its limits are those of every tracker: it measures the prompts it runs, not every conversation, and single answers vary from run to run. The toolkit is covered in depth in the Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit review.

Where does Search Console fit?

Its Generative AI performance report, launched in June 2026 and available to all sites from the end of August, shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country and device. That tells you which pages Google shows as links in its AI features. It does not show queries, answer text or competitors, and clicks are not listed as a metric. It is Google's first-party source of page-level AI exposure data; merchants also get brand-level AI performance insights in Merchant Center.

Which tool answers which question?

Question GA4 Semrush Search Console
Were we mentioned or cited for a prompt? No Yes, for prompts it runs No
Which of our pages are shown in Google's AI features? No For tracked keywords Yes, impressions by page
How are we described, and who else is named? No Yes No
How many visits came from ChatGPT, Gemini and similar? Yes, where referrers survive No, estimates only No
Did AI visits convert? Yes No No
Did AI Overview clicks grow? Mixed into Organic Search No Impressions only

How should you combine them?

Measure three layers and report them together each month:

  1. Presence: mentions, citations and position for your key prompts, from Semrush or another tracker.
  2. Exposure: AI Overview and AI Mode impressions by page, from Search Console.
  3. Outcome: AI Assistant sessions and conversions from GA4, plus branded search in Search Console and direct visits to deep pages as indirect signals.

When presence rises and outcomes follow within a few weeks, you have a reasonable, though not proven, link. When presence rises and nothing else moves, check whether the prompts you track are the ones buyers actually ask. More on Google's side is in how to measure brand visibility in Google AI Overviews.

How do you set up GA4 for AI traffic?

  1. Use the AI Assistant channel in Traffic acquisition for data from May 2026 onwards.
  2. For earlier dates, build a custom channel group or exploration filter on session source, using a pattern such as:
chatgpt\.com|perplexity\.ai|gemini\.google\.com|copilot\.microsoft\.com|claude\.ai|chat\.deepseek\.com
  1. Check landing pages for AI-referred sessions. They show which pages assistants send people to, which often differ from your top organic pages.
  2. Mark key events, such as sign-ups or demo requests, so you can compare conversion rates by channel.
  3. Ask people. Add an "AI assistant" option to a "How did you hear about us?" field. Self-reported answers capture the mentions that never produce a trackable click.

What might this look like in practice?

Consider an illustrative payroll software company, Morvquay. GA4 showed about 300 AI Assistant sessions a month, too few to justify much work. Semrush Prompt Tracking showed Morvquay mentioned in 40% of answers to its 50 buying questions, and its pricing page cited often. Search Console's generative AI report showed that page gaining impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode. A new form question revealed that 14% of demo requests named an AI assistant. Together, the numbers made the case that AI answers mattered far more than GA4's session count suggested.

What do people ask about GA4, Semrush and AI citations?

Does GA4 show ChatGPT traffic?

Yes. Since May 2026, ChatGPT referrals appear in the AI Assistant default channel, where the referrer is passed.

Can GA4 show AI Overview clicks?

Not separately. They are counted in Organic Search. Search Console's Generative AI report shows impressions by page.

Does Semrush count citations?

Yes. Prompt Tracking reports citations of your domain as Owned Sources, and Brand Performance reports citations across its question set.

Is there a free way to measure citations?

Partly. Search Console's report is free for Google's AI features, Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report shows your citations in Copilot and Bing's AI answers for free, and Amplitude's free AI Visibility report covers ChatGPT and AI Overviews on prompts it generates. Tracking your own chosen prompts across several assistants usually needs a paid tool.
