How Do I Get My Website Mentioned in Claude Answers?

To get your website mentioned in Claude answers, start with access. Make sure Claude's crawlers can reach your pages, and get those pages into Brave Search's index, which Claude's web search uses. Then give Claude clear, specific pages and credible third-party sources to draw on. Anthropic runs three crawlers: one for training, one for search indexing and one for pages users ask about, and each is controlled separately in robots.txt. An analysis of about 35,000 Claude citations found that 79.2% came from pages in Brave's top ten results, compared with 34% in Google's top ten. So strong Google rankings are not enough on their own. When Claude answers without searching, it relies on what it learned in training, which reflects your wider reputation.

How does Claude find web content?

  • Web search. When Claude searches, Anthropic lists Brave Search among its subprocessors for web search. The pages Claude reads and cites are, largely, pages Brave returns for its queries.
  • Claude-SearchBot. Anthropic describes this crawler as navigating the web to improve search result quality and the relevance and accuracy of search responses.
  • Claude-User. When a user asks Claude about a page, it may fetch the page with this agent. Anthropic notes that disabling it prevents Claude retrieving your content in response to user queries, which may reduce your visibility.
  • ClaudeBot. Collects public content for training. Blocking it keeps your content out of future training, but not out of live search answers.
  • Training data. Without a search, Claude answers from what it learned.

How to check whether Claude can read your site is covered in whether Claude can read your website and how to check what it searches for.

What technical changes help websites get cited by Claude?

  1. Allow Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User in robots.txt, and make sure your firewall or bot protection does not block them.
  2. Check Brave indexing. Search Brave for your brand, your main pages and your target questions. If key pages are missing, work on discovery: internal links, sitemaps, and links from pages Brave already knows. Brave's crawler does not use its own user agent and will not crawl anything Googlebot cannot, so check that your robots.txt and bot protection let Googlebot reach every page you want Claude to find.
  3. Understand how Brave discovers pages. An analysis by MERJ found that Brave's crawler is partly driven by its Web Discovery Project, in which Brave browser users opt in to share the pages they visit. It also found that Brave's URL submission tool only re-fetches pages Brave already knows. Pages that real visitors reach, and that other engines already rank, are discovered more readily.
  4. Serve content in the HTML. Most AI crawlers do not run JavaScript, so key facts must be in the page the server sends.
  5. Keep pages fast and stable, without interstitials covering the content.
  6. Use clear headings and a direct answer at the top, so the passage Claude extracts can stand alone.

What content does Claude cite?

The same kinds of source other assistants cite: pages that answer the question directly, with specific facts. Reviews, comparisons and roundups are cited for recommendation questions. Documentation and help articles are cited for "how do I" questions, and data with a clear method for factual ones. For brand questions, Claude draws on your own pages and on what others say about you. How to make pages specific enough to be quoted is covered in why your high-quality website content is not showing up in AI answers.

What off-site work helps Claude mention you?

Claude, like other assistants, leans on what others say for recommendation questions. The off-site work that helps:

  • Review profiles on platforms that allow AI search crawlers, with recent, detailed reviews.
  • Inclusion in comparisons and roundups that Brave ranks for your category questions. Search Brave for those questions to see which pages lead.
  • Coverage in trade and industry publications that name your company with your category.
  • Consistent profiles on business databases and directories, so facts about you agree.

Check each source's crawler rules. Some review and social sites block AI search crawlers, which makes their content much less likely to be read in Claude's live answers, although Claude still cites some blocked sites, such as Quora, through its search provider.

How do Claude's answers differ with and without search?

With search, Claude's answer reflects the pages it retrieves at that moment, mostly from Brave's results, and it cites them. Recent fixes to your pages and profiles can show up within weeks, once they are indexed. Without search, Claude answers from training data, with no citations, and may describe your business as it was when the model was trained. Anthropic publishes a training data cutoff for each model. You cannot update that knowledge directly. The best you can do is make current facts widely and consistently available, so future models learn them, and so search-based answers correct the picture in the meantime.

Why might Claude give vague or wrong answers about my site?

  • It could not fetch the page, because of robots rules, bot protection or a login.
  • The page is empty without scripts.
  • It answered from training, which predates your changes.
  • Brave's index has an old version or none at all.
  • Third-party sources disagree with your site.

How to diagnose and fix these is covered in why Claude gives vague or incorrect answers about your website, and how to report false statements in how to report false information about your company in Claude.

How do you check whether it is working?

  • Server logs: requests from Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User, and their status codes.
  • Brave Search: whether your key pages appear for your target questions.
  • Claude itself: ask your buyer questions with web search on, several times each, and record whether you are mentioned and which pages are cited.
  • Referral traffic from claude.ai in your analytics.

Compare with ChatGPT and Google's AI features. If you appear there but not in Claude, the gap is usually Brave indexing or crawler access.

What might an illustrative case look like?

Consider an illustrative cybersecurity consultancy that appeared in Google's AI Overviews for several questions but never in Claude's answers. Its logs showed Claude-SearchBot receiving challenge pages from its bot protection. A Brave search found only its home page and two blog posts indexed. The consultancy allowed Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User through its bot protection, confirmed that Googlebot could crawl its service pages, since Brave's crawler has no user agent of its own and skips anything Googlebot cannot crawl, and improved internal linking to those pages. It earned links from two industry sites that Brave already ranked. It also rewrote its service pages to open with direct answers. Two months later, Brave had indexed its service pages, and Claude cited them in about a quarter of answers to its target questions.

What do people ask about Claude visibility?

Do I need to block ClaudeBot to protect my content?

Blocking ClaudeBot stops training use. Keep Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User allowed if you want to appear in live answers and user-requested summaries.

Does ranking well in Google help with Claude?

Somewhat, since strong pages tend to do well everywhere. But Claude's citations track Brave's results more closely, so check your Brave visibility separately.

Does Claude read llms.txt files?

There is no published commitment that Claude uses them for answers. Crawler access, Brave indexing and clear pages matter far more.

Can I submit my site to Claude?

There is no submission route for Claude answers. Focus on crawler access, Brave indexing and the third-party sources Claude already cites for your questions.
