Why Does Claude Give Vague or Incorrect Answers About My Website?
Claude gives vague or incorrect answers about a website for four main reasons. It may answer from what it learned in training, without searching, and training data is dated and thin for most businesses. Anthropic's search or user-request crawlers may be blocked, so Claude cannot fetch your current pages and falls back on search snippets or other sites. Your site may be hard to read without JavaScript, or there may be little independent information about you. Claude also tends to hedge when it is unsure, which produces vague answers rather than confident wrong ones.
Where does Claude get information about a website?
Two sources:
- Training data: what the model learned before its knowledge cutoff. For most small and mid-sized businesses this is limited, and may be out of date.
- Web search and page fetching: when web search is used, Claude can search the web and read pages to answer a question, and cite them.
Anthropic documents three crawlers. Blocking ClaudeBot only affects training. Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User control how Anthropic indexes and fetches your pages: Anthropic says blocking Claude-SearchBot may reduce your visibility and accuracy in search results, and blocking Claude-User stops Claude fetching a page when a user asks. Blocked pages can still surface through Claude's search provider, but they are much less likely to be cited and cannot be read or described accurately. More is in can Claude read my website. Claude's web search also draws on Brave Search, which Anthropic lists as its search provider, so pages Brave has not indexed are unlikely to reach search-based answers.
Many sites block ClaudeBot to opt out of training and, by accident, block the other two as well, sometimes through a blanket "block AI bots" setting.
Why are Claude's answers about a website often vague?
- No search was used, so the answer relies on training data that holds little about you.
- Little independent coverage, so even a search finds mostly your own pages, or nothing that confirms your details.
- Caution. When information is thin, Claude tends to say it does not have specific details or to describe the category in general terms. That is frustrating, but it is more useful than invented detail, and it tells you exactly what is missing.
- Ambiguous names. If your name matches other businesses, Claude may describe the category rather than guess which one you are.
Why are some answers incorrect?
- Outdated training data: old prices, services, locations or leadership.
- Outdated or conflicting sources: directories, old articles or archived pages that say something different from your current site.
- Blended entities: details from a similar-named business.
- Occasional invention. Anthropic's own help centre acknowledges that Claude can produce incorrect or misleading responses, for example when its training data is out of date, and advises checking the original sources when it uses web search.
How do you test what Claude can see?
- Ask with web search enabled: "What does [business name] in [town] do? Please search the web." Note the sources it cites.
- Give it your URL and ask it to summarise the page. If it reports that it cannot access the page, check your robots.txt and firewall for Claude-User and Claude-SearchBot.
- Ask without search. If your Claude app shows a web search option, turn it off and ask again. If there is no toggle, ask: "Without searching the web, what do you know about [business name]?" Treat the answer as a rough view of training data.
- Ask factual questions: prices, hours, services, locations. Compare every answer with your current facts.
- Check server logs for requests from Claude-User and Claude-SearchBot, and the status codes returned.
- Search your name and key pages on search.brave.com. Pages Brave has not indexed are unlikely to reach Claude's search-based answers; make sure Googlebot can reach them, since Brave's crawler has no user agent of its own and skips anything Googlebot cannot crawl.
If answers improve sharply with search on, your current pages are fine and the gap is in training data, which fades as new models are released. If they stay vague or wrong with search on, look at access, readability and the sources Claude cites.
What should you fix first?
- Crawler access: allow Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User in robots.txt and in any firewall or CDN bot rules, even if you choose to block ClaudeBot for training.
- Readable pages: your name, what you do, locations, prices or ranges, and contact details in plain HTML text on the homepage and about page.
- Clear identity: a consistent full name with a descriptor everywhere, especially if your name is shared with others.
- Current facts everywhere: update listings and directories, and redirect or update outdated pages.
- Independent coverage: reviews, directory profiles, and articles that describe you, so searches find corroboration beyond your own site.

How do you report a false answer about your company?
Claude offers feedback options on responses; use them for clear errors, with the correct information. For lasting improvement, fix the sources Claude reads. More detail is in how to report false information about your company in Claude.
What does a quick diagnosis look like?
An illustrative case: an accountancy firm finds that Claude describes it as "a financial services company" with no detail, and once lists an office it closed three years ago.
- With web search on, Claude cites a business directory with the old office and the firm's homepage.
- Given the firm's URL, Claude says it cannot access the page; the site's security plugin blocks unfamiliar bots, including Claude-User.
- With web search off, Claude says it has no specific information.
The fix: allow Anthropic's search and user-request crawlers, correct the directory listing, and add a clear "about us" paragraph with services and the current office. After recrawling, search-based answers describe the firm accurately.
What do people ask about Claude and websites?
Does blocking ClaudeBot stop Claude from reading my site?
Blocking ClaudeBot relates to training. Anthropic uses separate agents for search indexing and user-requested fetches, which have their own robots.txt entries.
How often does Claude's training data update?
Only with new model versions. Current information reaches Claude's answers through web search, not retraining.
Why does Claude say it cannot find my business?
Usually because search found little about you, your pages are blocked, or your name is ambiguous. Check access, check whether Brave Search has indexed your pages, and add identifying details.
Is Claude more cautious than other assistants?
It often hedges when information is thin, which can make answers vaguer. The fix is the same: clear, accessible, corroborated information.
