How Do I Use SparkToro to Find Buyer Questions for AI Visibility Tracking?

Start from the audience, not the keyword. Describe your buyers in a sentence, run a SparkToro report, and take three things from it. First, the AI prompt topics and example prompts SparkToro generates for that audience. Second, the search keywords those people use. Third, the words they use to describe themselves, which give your prompts realistic context. Then turn them into a fixed set of tracking questions and run each one many times. Know what the prompt data is: SparkToro says its prompt topics are produced by an AI from real search and audience data, not observed prompts. Plans run from free previews to $300 a month; the $38-a-month Personal plan, billed annually with four reports, suits most single businesses. Below are the workflow and a short review.

What does SparkToro provide?

SparkToro is an audience research tool. Its pricing page describes building an audience from a sentence, such as "vegan home cooks who follow plant-based nutrition creators", and then returning data about that audience:

  • Social accounts, websites, publications, YouTube channels and podcasts the audience follows, reads or watches.
  • Online communities where the audience discusses its problems.
  • Apps and AI tools the audience has adopted.
  • Search keywords the audience types.
  • Bio keywords: how the audience describes itself.
  • AI prompts: prompt topics the audience is likely to ask AI tools about, with example prompts.

It also offers an MCP server, included with paid plans, for exploring its data inside an AI assistant, and a separate pay-as-you-go API.

Where does SparkToro's AI prompt data come from?

From a model, grounded in real audience data. When SparkToro launched prompt topics in March 2026, it explained that it does not get them directly from its clickstream panel. Instead, it feeds the search keywords it knows an audience uses, along with other audience data, such as its description and the websites it visits, into an AI, and asks for likely prompt topics scored by affinity. Clicking "see examples" gives specific prompts in the style of ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Claude. SparkToro's founder was candid that he is not certain the topics match what that audience asks, in that order, but argued they are likely better than anything available without buying custom clickstream data.

That makes the prompts a good starting point, not ground truth. Treat them as hypotheses about what buyers ask, and check them against other sources such as your own customer conversations and Search Console queries.

How do you turn a SparkToro report into tracking questions?

A step-by-step workflow:

  1. Describe the buyer, not the product. For example, "operations managers at 50-person logistics companies" rather than "fleet software".
  2. Pull the AI prompt topics and the example prompts for the topics closest to your product.
  3. Add search keywords the audience uses and rewrite them as natural questions.
  4. Use bio keywords for context, so prompts sound like real people: "As an operations manager at a small haulage firm, what software would you recommend for planning routes and tracking drivers?"
  5. Group the questions by need, such as category, comparison, price, integration and problem-solving.
  6. Trim to 20 to 50 questions, removing duplicates and branded questions, and add a few control questions where you would not expect to appear.
  7. Freeze the set for a quarter.

Choosing the final prompt set is covered in how to choose the right prompts to track for AI visibility, and procurement-style buyer questions in what procurement buyer questions to use to measure AI search visibility.

Why must you run each question many times?

Because AI answers vary a lot. SparkToro's own research, published in January 2026, had 600 volunteers run 12 prompts through ChatGPT, Claude and Google's AI a combined 2,961 times. Nearly every response was unique in the list of brands, their order and the number of items listed. A single run tells you almost nothing. Run each question repeatedly, ideally dozens of times over a few weeks, and report the share of runs in which you appear, not a rank. SparkToro's launch post makes the same recommendation for its example prompts. Doing this by hand is covered in how to manually track AI visibility by testing prompts across AI engines.

SparkToro review: find where your audience hangs out to create citable content

SparkToro's more established value for AI visibility is not the prompts but the sources. AI answers often cite publications, websites, video channels and community discussions. SparkToro shows which of those your audience actually uses. The overlap between "sources my audience reads" and "sources AI answers cite for my category" is where earned coverage pays off twice: once with the audience, and again in AI answers.

Strengths:

  • Starts from people, which produces questions a keyword tool would miss.
  • Combines search keywords, self-description and sources in one report.
  • Gives prompt ideas and example prompts quickly.
  • MCP access lets you query the data from an AI assistant.

Limits:

  • Prompt data is synthetic, generated by AI from other data, as SparkToro says.
  • Small or niche audiences may return thin data, because its data types depend on how many of those people its panel data covers.
  • No visibility tracking. SparkToro finds questions and sources; you still need a tracker or manual checks to see whether you appear.
  • Report limits. Four reports a month on the Personal plan go quickly if you test several audiences.

We have not run SparkToro reports ourselves; this review is based on its pricing and product pages and its published research.

What does SparkToro cost?

As listed on SparkToro's pricing page:

Plan Price Reports a month Users Notable features
Free $0 3 previews 1 Preview data only
Personal $38/mo, annual only 4 1 All data types, MCP access
Business $150/mo, savings on annual 25 10 Persona Builder, Take Action
Agency $300/mo, savings on annual 250 100 SSO, SCIM, invoice payment

For a single business defining its tracking set, the Personal plan is usually enough: one or two audience reports a quarter, refreshed when your market changes.

How does it fit with other sources?

Use SparkToro alongside, not instead of, first-party sources. Search Console's long queries show mostly what people typed into Google, though AI tracking tools add some, as described in how to use Search Console long-tail queries to find AI prompts. Bing Webmaster Tools' grounding queries show the phrases Microsoft's AI used to find your pages. Sales calls and support tickets show how buyers describe problems before they know your name. SparkToro adds the audience lens and the list of sources worth earning coverage in.

What might this look like in practice?

Consider an illustrative route-planning software company, Zellisk. Its tracking set had been built from its own keyword list and mostly contained product terms. A SparkToro report on "operations managers at small haulage and courier firms" returned prompt topics about driver shortages, fuel costs and delivery windows, and bio keywords such as "transport manager" and "fleet coordinator". The report also showed a trade publication and two industry podcasts the audience followed heavily. Zellisk rebuilt its 40-question set around those problems and job titles, ran each question 20 times a month, and pitched the trade publication a data story. Its appearance rate was lower on the new set at first, but it reflected real buyer questions, and it rose after the coverage ran.
