SE Ranking vs Profound: How Their AI Visibility Tools Measure Mentions and Citations
Both count mentions in much the same way: the share of tracked answers that name your brand. They measure citations differently. SE Ranking's link presence is the share of answers that link to your site, counting only answers that include links at all. Profound reports Citation Share, your share of all sources cited, and Citation Coverage, the share of responses citing your domain. From the same data, one can show 25% and the other 6%, and both are correct. SE Ranking is the cheaper, SEO-integrated option, with daily AI tracking from $129 a month. Profound analyses citations in more depth, and its Enterprise plan covers up to nine engines; its agency client workspaces cover three. Before comparing numbers across tools, check what each one divides by.
How do their metrics compare?
From SE Ranking's help and blog pages and Profound's product and blog pages:
| Measure | SE Ranking | Profound |
|---|---|---|
| Mentions | Mention presence: share of all tracked prompts where your brand is mentioned | Visibility Score: share of tracked responses that mention your brand |
| Citations | Link presence: share of prompts that link to you, among prompts where the AI gave any links | Citation Share: your share of all citations; Citation Coverage: share of responses that cite your domain |
| Position | How often you appear in the top three positions within answers | Average Position of your brand in answers |
| Competitors | Competitor comparison on the same prompts; AI competitor research | Share of Voice: your mentions compared with competitors' mentions, with a rank |
| Sentiment | Mentions, citations and sentiment dashboard in the AI Search add-on | Sentiment dashboard with positive and negative breakdown |
| Period | Shares shown as of the last day of the period, with change in percentage points from the first day | Trends over time, by topic, engine and prompt |
How does SE Ranking measure mentions and links?
SE Ranking splits presence into two shares. Mentions are counted against all tracked prompts: if 30 of 100 prompts mention you, mention presence is 30%. Links are counted only against prompts where the AI platform gave source links, since many answers include none. If 40 of the 100 answers include links and 10 of those link to you, link presence is 25%. SE Ranking also reports how often you appear in the top three positions of an answer, since earlier mentions are more likely to be read.
This design stops engines that rarely cite from dragging your link figure down, which makes link presence a fairer measure of how often you win citations when citations are given. It also means link presence can look high on an engine that seldom links at all, so read it next to the number of answers with links. SE Ranking tracks ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode, AI Overviews and Perplexity, with prompts run daily. More on its plans is in the SE Ranking AI visibility tracker review.
How does Profound measure mentions and citations?
Profound's Visibility Score is the percentage of tracked responses that mention your brand, close in spirit to SE Ranking's mention presence. Its Share of Voice compares your mentions with competitors' mentions across all responses and ranks you among them. Average Position shows where you usually appear in answers.
Citation Share measures how often your domain is cited as a source. Profound classifies every cited source as owned, competitor, earned media, press wire, social or institution, and shows citation share by platform, topic and prompt, with watched pages to follow individual URLs. It runs each tracked prompt daily across the consumer versions of up to nine engines. Its strength is showing which third-party sources win citations in your category, not just whether you do. More is in the Profound review.
Why can the same data give different numbers?
Take one month of illustrative data: 100 prompts, 40 answers with links, 200 cited sources in total. You are mentioned in 30 answers and linked in 10 answers, with 12 of the 200 citations pointing to your site.
- Mention measures: SE Ranking's mention presence and Profound's Visibility Score both come out around 30%.
- SE Ranking link presence: 10 of 40 answers with links, or 25%.
- Profound citation share: 12 of 200 citations, or 6%.
Neither is wrong. Link presence answers "when AI cites sources, how often is one of them mine?" Citation share answers "what slice of all the sources AI cites belongs to me?" The first suits tracking your own progress; the second suits comparing yourself with every other source in the category. Why mentions and citations should be reported separately is covered in why measure brand mention rate separately from citation rate.
How do they differ beyond metrics?
- Price and access. SE Ranking's Core plan costs $129 a month ($103.20 billed yearly) with 2,000 keywords and 100 daily prompts; an AI Search add-on adds 200 prompts for $89 a month. Profound sells to brands through custom Enterprise contracts after a seven-day trial, and to agencies at $99 a month plus $399 per client workspace.
- Engines. SE Ranking covers five AI surfaces. Profound covers up to nine on Enterprise, including Claude, Copilot, Grok and DeepSeek.
- SEO context. SE Ranking combines AI tracking with rank tracking, audits and backlinks. Profound adds AI crawler analytics, fact-checking and content agents instead.
Which should you choose?
- SE Ranking if you want AI mentions and links next to your rankings, at a published price, and five engines are enough.
- Profound if you need many engines, detailed source classification and citation share across a category, and can buy an enterprise or agency plan.
Whichever you choose, keep the same metric definitions in reports over time, and never mix figures from different tools in one chart.
How should you report these metrics?
- Report mentions and citations separately, with each tool's definition in a footnote.
- Show the denominator: number of prompts, answers with links and total citations.
- Report position alongside presence, since being named fifth is weaker than being named first.
- Use trends over several weeks, because answers vary between runs.
- Add a short sample of real answers so readers see what the numbers mean.
Choosing which of these to put in front of leadership is covered in which AI visibility KPIs brands should track.
What might this look like in practice?
Consider an illustrative insurance comparison site, Quillgate, that switched from SE Ranking to Profound when it expanded into three countries. Its link presence had been 28%, but Profound's first report showed a citation share of 7%, and the leadership team feared a collapse. The analyst explained the different denominators, rebuilt the last three months in both tools for overlapping prompts, and found performance unchanged. Quillgate kept both measures in reports for one quarter, with a note on how each is calculated.
