How Do You Get Featured in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode?

Google says there are no special requirements. A page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet, and ordinary SEO best practices apply. Both features use query fan-out, running several related searches across subtopics, so pages that answer the specific sub-questions behind a query have more chances to be cited. Getting into one does not mean getting into the other: AI Overviews and AI Mode shared only about 14% of cited URLs in Ahrefs' analysis of 730,000 response pairs. Schema is not required, and brand mentions across the web appear to matter more than markup. There is no guaranteed method, but there is a clear set of things that raise your chances.

What does Google say is required?

Google's documentation on AI features is short and direct:

  • No additional requirements. There are no extra requirements or special optimisations to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
  • Eligibility. To be shown as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet.
  • No special markup. There is no special schema.org structured data you need to add.
  • Fan-out. Both features may issue multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to build a response.
  • Fundamentals still count. Allow crawling in robots.txt and in your CDN or hosting setup, make content findable through internal links, provide a good page experience, and put important content in text.

Google also notes that meeting every requirement does not guarantee a page will be crawled, indexed or shown. How the features work is explained in what Google AI Overviews are and how they work.

Do conversational question headings help content appear in Google AI Overviews?

They can help indirectly, not as a trigger. Query fan-out breaks a question into sub-questions. A page whose headings state those sub-questions, each followed by a direct answer, gives Google clear passages to match. CXL's review of 100 AI Overview citations found that 55% of the cited passages came from the first 30% of the source page, which supports putting answers early rather than burying them.

Google, though, says you do not need to break content into artificial chunks. Headings phrased as questions work because they make the page clearer to readers and to retrieval systems, not because Google rewards the question mark. Good sources for heading questions are People Also Ask boxes, customer emails and sales calls.

How much do structured data, schema, and brand authority affect Google AI Overviews?

  • Schema: little direct effect on citations. Google says no special structured data is needed. Ahrefs' controlled study of 1,885 pages that added JSON-LD found no measurable lift in AI Mode, and a small decline in AI Overviews that it could not attribute to the schema. Structured data still helps rich results and product listings.
  • Brand authority: strong association. Ahrefs' analysis of 75,000 brands found that YouTube mentions of a brand, at about 0.74, and branded web mentions, at about 0.66 to 0.71, were the factors most closely linked with appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Backlinks were much weaker, at about 0.22. About a quarter of brands had no AI Overview mentions at all.
  • Rankings: helpful but not decisive. Ahrefs' 2026 update found that 38% of AI Overview citations came from pages in the organic top 10, with the rest spread well beyond the first page.

So the most effective levers are content that answers the sub-questions well, and a brand that is mentioned widely in reviews, articles and videos.

How to rank in Google AI Mode

AI Mode works like a conversation with Google Search. It writes longer answers than AI Overviews, about four times longer in Ahrefs' analysis, names more brands and entities, and runs many searches per question. To be cited:

  1. Cover the subtopics. For a question such as "best CRM for a small law firm", AI Mode may search pricing, integrations, security and reviews separately. Have clear pages or sections for each.
  2. Offer non-commodity content. Google's generative AI guidance stresses original, useful content over material that repeats what everyone else says.
  3. Be the named entity. AI Mode names brands often, so being mentioned in the reviews and comparisons it reads matters.
  4. Keep your Business Profile complete for local questions. SE Ranking found google.com itself, including Business Profile and side-panel content, made up about 17% of AI Mode citations in early 2026.
  5. Stay indexable and snippet-eligible on the pages that matter.

How AI Mode changes content discovery and SEO for managed service providers

Managed service providers are a good example of how AI Mode shifts discovery. A buyer might ask, "Which managed IT providers near Leeds support law firms and handle cyber insurance requirements?" That single question fans out into searches about location, sector experience, compliance, response times and pricing. What helps an MSP:

  • Sector pages that describe work for specific industries, with the regulations and tools involved.
  • Plain pricing information, such as typical per-user ranges and what is included, even if exact prices vary.
  • Service-level details: response times, support hours and escalation.
  • Proof: case studies with outcomes, certifications, and reviews on the directories buyers use.
  • A complete Business Profile with the right categories and service areas.

A generic "IT services" page competes poorly with providers that answer each of those sub-questions explicitly.

Does appearing in Google AI Overviews mean my site will appear in AI Mode?

No. Ahrefs compared 730,000 pairs of AI Overview and AI Mode responses to the same queries. They reached similar conclusions 86% of the time, but only 13.7% of citations overlapped. SE Ranking found a similar pattern, with about 11% of URLs and 16% of domains shared. The two features draw on the same index but run different searches and choose different sources. Track them separately. Whether AI Overview gains carry over to other assistants is covered in whether optimising for AI Overviews helps other AI engines.

Technical changes that help websites get cited in Google AI Mode

  1. Check indexing of key pages in Search Console's URL Inspection tool.
  2. Allow snippets. Settings such as nosnippet, a very low max-snippet or data-nosnippet on the main content limit what AI features can show.
  3. Leave the Search Console generative AI setting on "include". Since August 2026, sites can exclude themselves from AI Overviews and AI Mode; check this has not been switched off.
  4. Let Googlebot through robots.txt, CDN and firewall rules, and serve key content in the initial HTML rather than only after scripts run.
  5. Keep canonicals and redirects clean, so the version you want cited is the one indexed.
  6. Use accurate structured data for products, reviews and organisation details, for rich results and product surfaces rather than as an AI trigger.
  7. Keep Merchant Center and Business Profile data current if you sell products or serve a local area.
  8. Watch Search Console's generative AI report, which shows AI Overview and AI Mode impressions by page.

What might this look like in practice?

Consider an illustrative MSP, Plovard IT, that appeared in AI Overviews for "what is managed IT" but never in AI Mode for buying questions. Its site had one general services page. It added pages for legal and accounting clients, a pricing page with typical per-user ranges, and a page on response times and security standards. It asked clients to leave reviews on the directories buyers use, and completed its Business Profile service areas. Within three months, AI Mode began naming Plovard in answers about IT support for law firms in its region, while its AI Overview presence stayed much the same.
