What Are Google AI Overviews and How Do They Work?

Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of some Google Search results, with links to the web pages they draw on. They are written by a Gemini model, and Google made Gemini 3 the default model for AI Overviews globally in January 2026. For each search where Google's systems judge a summary helpful, the model runs related searches across the question's subtopics. It retrieves pages from Google's index using Search's core ranking systems, then writes a short answer and links to supporting pages. People can ask follow-up questions from an Overview, continuing into a conversation. Overviews appear in more than 200 countries and territories. They answer many questions without a click, which is why they matter so much to site owners.

What AI model powers Google AI Overviews?

AI Overviews run on Google's Gemini models, customised for Search. When they launched in the US in May 2024, Google described them as powered by a new Gemini model customised for Google Search. On 27 January 2026, Google announced that Gemini 3 had become the default model for AI Overviews globally. It also said people could ask follow-up questions directly from an Overview. Google updates the model over time, so the model name matters less than how it is used: it is grounded in Google Search, meaning it builds its answer from pages retrieved from the Search index rather than from memory alone.

How is an AI Overview built?

Google's documentation and announcements describe the process in broad terms:

  1. Decide whether to show one. Google's systems show an Overview when they determine generative AI can be especially helpful, for example to pull together information from several sources.
  2. Fan out. The model can issue multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources, a technique Google calls query fan-out.
  3. Retrieve pages. Those searches draw on Google's index using its core ranking systems, favouring relevant, up-to-date pages.
  4. Write the summary. Gemini writes a concise answer from the retrieved content.
  5. Attach links. Supporting pages are shown as links within or beside the summary.
  6. Offer follow-ups. People can ask a follow-up question and continue in a conversational experience.

Because the answer is built from retrieved pages, it changes as those pages change. It can also differ between searches, since the model generates each summary fresh.

When does an AI Overview appear?

Overviews appear on a minority of searches, weighted towards longer, more complex and question-style queries. Pew Research Center found 18% of the Google searches in its March 2025 study produced an AI summary. Only 8% of one- or two-word searches did, against 53% of searches of ten words or more. Semrush's tracking of over 10 million keywords found Overviews settled at around 16% of queries by late 2025. They have also spread beyond purely informational searches into commercial and navigational ones.

They are available to all users in the countries, territories and languages Google lists in its help centre, now more than 200 countries and territories. Users cannot switch them off, but can choose the "Web" filter to see only links. How query length affects them is covered in whether long-tail and complex queries are more likely to trigger AI Overviews.

Where do the links in an AI Overview come from?

From Google's index, but not simply from the top results for the query typed. Ahrefs' 2026 analysis of 863,000 search results found only about 38% of pages cited in AI Overviews ranked in Google's top 10 for the same query. That was down from about 76% in 2025, before the switch to Gemini 3. The rest were split roughly evenly between positions 11–100 and pages outside the top 100, which likely reflects fan-out searches for related subtopics. YouTube is the most cited domain overall.

To be eligible as a supporting link, Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet. There are no additional technical requirements, and no special markup or files are needed. Google has also begun rolling out preferred sources to AI Overviews, which lets users choose sources they want to see more of.

How accurate are AI Overviews?

Mostly accurate for common questions, but not reliably so. Shortly after launch in 2024, some Overviews gave odd or wrong answers, drawn from satirical or unreliable pages, and Google acknowledged the problems and made changes. Errors still happen, particularly on business details such as prices, opening hours and product specifics, and on topics with little good content. Google's spam policies apply to generative AI responses as well as regular results. Users can send feedback on any Overview. Why Overviews get business details wrong, and what to do, is covered in why Google AI Overviews hallucinate prices, competitors or business details.

How do AI Overviews differ from AI Mode and featured snippets?

Feature What it is How it answers
Featured snippet A quoted extract from one page, shown above results Copies text from a single source
AI Overview A generated summary at the top of normal results Combines several sources, with links
AI Mode A separate conversational search mode Longer, multi-turn answers built from many searches

AI Overviews sit within the normal results page; AI Mode replaces it with a conversation. Both use Gemini and Google's index, and both are counted in Search Console's reporting. How Overviews differ from assistants such as ChatGPT is covered in the difference between Google AI Overviews and AI chatbot answers.

What can site owners control?

  • Preview controls: nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex limit what Google can show from a page, including in AI formats.
  • Search generative AI control: a setting in Search Console lets a site opt out of AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative features in Discover. Google says sites that opt out get no traffic or impressions from these features.
  • Reporting: Search Console's Generative AI performance report shows impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country and device.
  • Google-Extended does not apply. Blocking it affects Gemini training and grounding in the Gemini app, not AI Overviews.

What do AI Overviews mean for traffic?

Fewer clicks per search for many informational queries. In Pew's browsing data, people who saw an AI summary clicked through to a regular result about half as often as those who did not: 8% of visits compared with 15%. SparkToro reported that about 68% of US Google searches ended without a click in early 2026. The practical response is to aim to be cited and named in the Overview, and to measure impressions and outcomes, not just clicks. How to adapt is covered in how marketers should adapt their content strategy to zero-click search.

What do people ask about AI Overviews?

Can I turn off AI Overviews?

Users cannot switch them off, but the "Web" filter shows only links. Site owners can opt their site out through Search Console's generative AI setting.

Do AI Overviews use my content without permission?

They use indexed pages under Google's normal Search terms. Preview controls and the opt-out setting let you limit or stop that use.

Are AI Overviews the same as Gemini?

They use Gemini models, but they are a Search feature grounded in Google's index, unlike the Gemini app, which sometimes answers from memory.

Do AI Overviews show ads?

Google has introduced ads in and around AI Overviews in some markets, labelled as sponsored.
