What Is the Difference Between Google AI Overviews and AI Chatbot Answers?
Google AI Overviews are summaries that Google shows automatically at the top of some search results. They are built from Google's own index, with links to sources, and sit above the ordinary results. AI chatbot answers come from conversations people start themselves in ChatGPT, Claude, the Gemini app, Perplexity or Copilot. A chatbot may answer from what its model learned or may search the web first. When it searches, it uses a different index, such as Bing's, Brave's or its own. Chatbot answers are usually longer, more personalised and more likely to recommend a small number of options. For businesses, the content that helps is largely shared. Crawler access, sources, controls and measurement differ.
How do they compare?
| Google AI Overviews | AI chatbot answers | |
|---|---|---|
| How it starts | Appears automatically for some Google searches | The user opens a chat and asks |
| Where answers come from | Google's index, retrieved by Google's systems | Model knowledge, plus web search through each provider's source |
| Crawlers involved | Googlebot | OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Bingbot and others |
| Format | A short summary with links, above organic results | A conversational answer, often with a shortlist and fewer links |
| Personalisation | Mainly location and search context | Chat history, memory and account settings can shape answers |
| Follow-ups | Can continue into a conversation in Google's AI Mode | Built for back-and-forth |
| Site owner controls | Search Console's generative AI setting and snippet controls | Each provider's crawler rules in robots.txt and firewall settings |
| Measurement | Search Console's generative AI report shows impressions by page | Third-party tracking or manual checks; no first-party reports for most |
Google moved AI Overviews to Gemini 3 in January 2026. It also lets people ask follow-up questions that continue into a conversation. That makes the line between the two blurrier than it was, but the starting point and sources still differ.
Where do AI Mode and the Gemini app fit?
- AI Mode is Google's conversational search. It uses Google's index and runs many related searches at once. It is closer to a chatbot in format, but draws on Google's sources and is covered by Search Console's generative AI report.
- The Gemini app is Google's chatbot. It grounds answers in Google Search, but site owners who block Google-Extended opt out of that grounding. Doing so does not affect AI Overviews or AI Mode.
How do clicks differ?
AI Overviews sit on a results page, so ordinary links remain one scroll away. Even so, Pew Research found in 2025 that users clicked a result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% without one. Chatbot answers often have fewer visible links. Much of their effect comes later, when people search for a brand they saw named. Clicks from chatbots are also harder to track, because app links often lose their referrer.
What does this mean for businesses?
Shared work helps in both:
- direct answers and specific facts on your pages;
- key content in HTML rather than scripts;
- accurate, consistent business information;
- reviews and independent coverage.
Different work for each:
- For AI Overviews: Google rankings, Google Business Profile, Search Console settings and snippet controls.
- For chatbots: allowing each provider's search crawlers, Bing and Brave rankings, and profiles such as Bing Places, Apple Business and Yelp. Tracking must cover each chatbot separately.
How far AI Overview work carries over is covered in whether optimizing for Google AI Overviews helps visibility in other AI engines. How AI Overviews work in more detail is covered in what Google AI Overviews are and how they work.
What might the same question look like in both?
Consider an illustrative question: "best project management software for a small architecture firm". On Google, an AI Overview gives a short paragraph naming three tools, with links to two review articles and a vendor page, above the usual results. In ChatGPT, the same question produces a longer answer with five tools, a short note on each, and a follow-up asking about team size and budget. It cites different sources, including a comparison page from a smaller site. Asked again later in the same chat, after mentioning that the firm uses Revit, ChatGPT narrows the list to two tools with relevant integrations. A vendor could be named in one and missing from the other.
What do people ask about AI Overviews and chatbots?
Is Google's AI Overview the same as ChatGPT?
No. AI Overviews are part of Google Search and use Google's index. ChatGPT is a separate assistant with its own model, search sources and crawlers.
Which matters more for my business?
It depends on where your buyers look. Google still handles most searches, but many buyers now use chatbots to build shortlists. Track both.
Can I appear in AI Overviews but not in ChatGPT?
Yes, commonly. Check whether OpenAI's search crawler can reach your site, and how your pages rank in Bing.
Do chatbots always search the web?
No. They search when the question needs current or specific information, otherwise they may answer from the model alone.
