How Does ChatGPT Choose Which Local Businesses to Recommend?
ChatGPT answers local questions by estimating where you are, searching the web, and combining what it finds with licensed local data. The most notable of those is Yelp's reviews, ratings, photos and business details. It has no announced access to Google Business Profiles or Google reviews, though Google Maps links often appear among its citations. It also recommends few businesses. SOCi's 2026 study of 350,000 locations found ChatGPT recommended 1.2% of them, against 35.9% that appeared in Google's local pack, and the recommended locations averaged 4.3 stars. Winning means being described consistently and specifically across your website, Yelp, Bing, Apple, Foursquare and the directories of your trade. Below is how it works, where the data comes from, and what to fix, trade by trade.
How does ChatGPT answer local questions?
What is local grounding in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity?
Local grounding means an assistant retrieves location-specific information, such as places, addresses, hours and reviews, and bases its answer on it rather than on what the model remembers. Each assistant grounds differently. Gemini uses Google Maps data directly, through a Maps tool that retrieves places, reviews, photos and hours. Perplexity uses its own web index and has integrated Yelp's local data since 2024. ChatGPT searches the web through its own crawler and third-party search providers, shows local listings on a map (a feature added in December 2024), and has licensed Yelp data. The same question can therefore produce different businesses in each assistant.
How does ChatGPT handle “near me” queries and location-based results?
It estimates your location. OpenAI's help documentation says ChatGPT may use your IP address to estimate your general location, such as your country, state or city, and applies that to searches. Unless the user has turned on location sharing, which also enables precise location, a "near me" question is effectively turned into a search for the service in their city. That is why results can be city-level rather than street-level, why VPNs change them, why testers should note whether location sharing is on, and why naming the neighbourhood in a question often gives better answers than "near me".
Which local search sources do AI answers use for home service businesses?
Mostly business websites, then directories. BrightLocal's December 2024 study of 800 local searches found that ChatGPT's sources were business websites 58% of the time, business mentions 27% and online directories 15%. Its much larger 2026 study of 1.9 million local AI citations found that Yelp had become ChatGPT's top directory source. Other directories that recur in home service answers include the BBB, Angi and Houzz. Access differs. Houzz allows AI search crawlers on its professional profiles, and the BBB allows them on business profiles but disallows its separate review pages. Nextdoor blocks major AI crawlers from business pages, so it is rarely a source.
Where do reviews and listings come from?
Why are Google reviews missing from ChatGPT answers?
Because ChatGPT has no licensed access to them. OpenAI has not announced a Google data licence. Google Maps links do appear among ChatGPT's citations for many local "best of" questions: Muck Rack's May 2026 study counted 188 Maps citations per 1,000 such queries. Those are links to Maps results, not access to the reviews behind them, and ChatGPT's own business cards draw on Yelp and other providers. Google Maps place pages are built with JavaScript, and most AI crawlers do not run JavaScript, so the reviews on them are hard to read. Review text reaches ChatGPT mainly when your website or a third-party site quotes it in ordinary text. A review widget loaded in an iframe or by script is usually invisible to the crawler.
Why don’t ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot use Google Maps for local recommendations?
Because Google Maps is Google's product and data. Google uses it directly for its own AI features, including Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode. Rival assistants have built on other sources: Perplexity on its own index and Yelp, Copilot on Bing's local data, and ChatGPT on the web and Yelp. ChatGPT is a partial exception: Google Maps links often appear among its citations for local "best of" questions, without any announced access to Google's underlying data. SOCi's analysts noted that ChatGPT and Perplexity lack a single central source for location information, unlike Gemini, which helps explain why their business facts are more often wrong.
How does Yelp data reach Apple Maps, Bing and ChatGPT?
Through licensing. Yelp says it gives Apple access to some business page information for Apple Maps, though it does not control how Apple uses it. Bing has shown Yelp reviews in its local results since a 2012 partnership. In 2026, Yelp began licensing reviews, ratings, photos and business details to OpenAI, and ChatGPT can now make restaurant reservations and join waitlists through Yelp in the US and Canada. Yelp's robots.txt blocks OpenAI's search crawler from business pages, so this data flows through the licence rather than crawling. A thin or outdated Yelp profile therefore follows you into several assistants at once.
Do Bing Places listings affect which businesses ChatGPT recommends?
Possibly, but OpenAI has not said so. OpenAI says ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers, but studies disagree on how closely its citations follow Bing: Seer found 87% within Bing's top 20, while Ahrefs found only about 8% overlap with Bing's top 10, the same as with Google's. Bing Places feeds Bing and Microsoft Copilot directly. Claiming it takes minutes, since Bing Places can import your Google Business Profile, so it is a low-cost step whether or not ChatGPT uses it.
How incomplete Foursquare listings affect local ChatGPT results
Foursquare is one of the main place-data providers licensed to apps and platforms, and its robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot while blocking GPTBot and ChatGPT-User. An incomplete or outdated Foursquare record can spread wrong hours, categories or addresses into other services that use its data, which then appear as conflicting facts. Claim and correct your listing, and fix it at the other main data aggregators in your market.
Does ChatGPT use Houzz to find local business information?
It can. Houzz's robots.txt names OpenAI's crawlers, including OAI-SearchBot, and allows them, so its professional profiles are readable. For builders, designers, landscapers and remodellers, a complete Houzz profile with project photos, captions and reviews gives ChatGPT another detailed source.
Do ChatGPT and Perplexity use Healthgrades, Zocdoc and RateMDs for local recommendations?
They can use some of them. Healthgrades' robots.txt blocks training crawlers such as GPTBot and ClaudeBot but leaves AI search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot under its default rules, and RateMDs does not restrict them. Zocdoc blocks automated requests for its robots.txt file, so open it in a browser to see its current rules. For clinicians, complete profiles on the directories your specialty's answers cite, plus a website stating conditions treated, insurance accepted and location, are the practical levers.
How do you optimize a Google Business Profile to appear in ChatGPT local results?
Mostly indirectly. ChatGPT has no announced access to Google Business Profiles, though Google Maps links, which lead to your profile, often appear among its citations for local "best of" questions (Muck Rack, May 2026). The profile is also the master record most other listings copy. Complete it with categories, services, attributes, hours and photos, then copy the same facts to Bing Places, which can import it, Apple Business, Yelp and Foursquare. Put the same service details and areas on your website, and show testimonials there as text, following each review platform's terms. Profile work for Google's own AI is covered in how to optimise Google Business Profile for local AI search visibility.
Why isn't my business recommended?
Why is my business invisible in AI local recommendations despite good Google reviews?
Because Google reviews mostly do not reach ChatGPT, Perplexity or Copilot. SOCi found that locations with strong Google rankings but weaker presence on Yelp, Facebook or their own websites often lost visibility in AI recommendations. The fix is to build the same evidence on the sources those assistants read: Yelp, your website, trade directories and local press. Inconsistent names, addresses and phone numbers make it worse, as explained in whether inconsistent NAP data can stop ChatGPT recommending a business.
How can a local business improve its chances of being recommended by ChatGPT?
- Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and your firewall.
- Build a specific website: a page per service, areas served in text, prices, credentials and a plain opening sentence saying what you do and where.
- Complete Yelp, since its data is licensed to OpenAI.
- Claim Bing Places, Apple Business and Foursquare, and match every fact.
- Get onto the directories and local guides that ChatGPT cites for your trade and town.
- Ask every customer for an honest review in their own words on the platforms that allow requests. Yelp asks businesses not to solicit reviews, so let Yelp reviews come unprompted.
- Check monthly with the questions customers ask, and look at the sources ChatGPT links.
Why do rivals win in specific trades?
Why does ChatGPT recommend another tailor instead of my bespoke suit shop?
Often because "tailor" covers alterations and bespoke tailoring alike, and your sources do not make the difference clear. Rivals that are recommended for bespoke suits usually state it plainly: bespoke or made-to-measure, number of fittings, lead times, cloth mills used, starting prices and appointment details. Put those on your site and listings, choose the most specific category available, and seek coverage in local style guides or wedding directories.
Why is ChatGPT recommending other event planners instead of my wedding planning business?
Because wedding questions carry details: budget, guest count, style and venue. Planners who are recommended publish their service tiers, such as full planning, partial planning or on-the-day coordination, the venues they have worked at, typical budgets and a captioned portfolio. They also appear on wedding directories and venues' preferred supplier lists, which answers cite. Separate yourself clearly from general event planners.
Why does ChatGPT recommend another window-cleaning company instead of mine?
Usually because the competitor's sources list what customers ask for: residential or commercial, high-rise work, water-fed poles, gutter and conservatory cleaning, regular rounds, insurance and the towns covered. A one-page site saying "professional window cleaning" does not match a question like "window cleaner for a three-storey house in Harrogate". Add service pages, areas and prices, and complete your Yelp and trade directory profiles.
Why does ChatGPT recommend another brewery instead of my taproom?
Taproom questions are about the visit: opening hours, food, children and dogs, events, tours and the beer list. Breweries that are recommended make those facts easy to find on their site and listings, and appear in local "things to do" and "best taprooms" guides. If you are a production brewery with a taproom, say so clearly, with taproom hours separate from business hours.
Why isn’t my restoration business showing up on ChatGPT?
First, check the word: "restoration" can mean water and fire damage, furniture, cars or buildings, and an unspecific site can be matched to none of them. Damage restoration firms that are recommended state emergency availability, response times, certifications, insurance claim support, residential and commercial work, and service areas, and they appear on home service directories with reviews. Make each service and area explicit.
How accurate is what ChatGPT says about local businesses?
Less accurate than most owners assume. In a 2026 test reported by Search Engine Journal, researchers asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity 13,365 questions about 165 London businesses and compared the answers with official records. Ninety-three per cent of the businesses had at least one basic fact wrong or missing, smaller businesses fared worse than larger ones, and roughly one answer in ten gave the wrong postcode even when the town was named. SOCi's study likewise found hours and addresses were often wrong in ChatGPT and Perplexity answers. The practical consequence is that fixing facts matters as much as winning recommendations. A business that is named with the wrong opening hours or an old address can lose the customer anyway.
How do you check what ChatGPT says about your business?
Run a small, repeatable test each month:
- Write ten questions a customer would ask, with and without your town, such as "best bespoke tailor in Bath" and "tailor near me for a wedding suit".
- Ask each one twice in ChatGPT with search on, from a device in your area, and note which businesses are named.
- Open the sources ChatGPT links for each recommendation, and list the websites and directories that keep appearing.
- Ask directly about your business, such as "What are the opening hours of [name] in [town]?", and compare the answer with your records.
- Record the results in a spreadsheet, so you can see whether changes to listings and pages move them.
Tools that automate this for local businesses are compared in the Local Falcon review.
What might this look like in practice?
Consider an illustrative window-cleaning firm, Tarncombe Rounds, with a 4.9-star Google rating and 180 Google reviews, but no presence in ChatGPT's answers. Its website had a single page, and it had never claimed Yelp, Bing Places or Foursquare. It added pages for residential rounds, commercial work and gutter cleaning, listing towns and prices; claimed and completed Yelp, Bing Places, Apple Business and Foursquare with matching details; and asked every customer for an honest Google review in their own words, leaving Yelp reviews to arrive unprompted, as Yelp asks. Three months later, ChatGPT began naming it for window-cleaning questions in two of its towns, citing its services page and Yelp profile.
What do people ask about ChatGPT local recommendations?
Does ChatGPT use Google reviews?
Not directly. ChatGPT has no Google review licence, though Google Maps links often appear among its citations for local "best of" questions, and your own site can quote reviews as text.
Does ChatGPT use Yelp?
Yes. Yelp licenses reviews, ratings, photos and business details to OpenAI.
How many local businesses does ChatGPT recommend?
Few. SOCi found ChatGPT recommended 1.2% of the 350,000 locations it studied.
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
Not in organic answers. Ads in ChatGPT, where shown, are labelled and separate from answers.
