How Does OpenAI and Stripe’s Agentic Commerce Protocol Enable In-Chat Shopping?

The Agentic Commerce Protocol, or ACP, is an open standard launched by Stripe and OpenAI in September 2025. It lets an AI agent read a merchant's catalogue, build a cart, complete a checkout and pass payment securely, without the merchant building a custom integration for each agent. It powered ChatGPT's Instant Checkout, which OpenAI scaled back in early 2026. Today most ChatGPT purchases finish on the merchant's own site, and OpenAI's guidelines describe Instant Checkout as limited to select marketplace partners. ACP still matters for how product data reaches agents, and for agents that do complete purchases. Getting into ChatGPT shopping results, however, depends on product data ChatGPT can read, not on ACP checkout: crawlable product pages and, for more control, a product feed.

What does ACP include?

Stripe's documentation describes ACP as an open standard, now created by Stripe, OpenAI and Meta, with composable building blocks:

Building block What it does
Agentic checkout Create, update and complete checkout sessions, with cart, fulfilment options and payment
Cart and feed Let agents browse product catalogues and manage carts before checkout
Delegate payment Pass payment tokens securely between buyer, agent and business through payment handlers
Delegate authentication Let agents act for a buyer with a business, using OAuth 2.0

The specification, OpenAPI definitions and JSON schemas are published openly. OpenAI's commerce documentation adds its own product feed specification, which sets the fields ChatGPT needs.

What is ACP and how does it create product feeds for ChatGPT shopping agents?

ACP defines how agents and businesses exchange catalogue and checkout data. For ChatGPT, the product feed is the part that matters for discovery. OpenAI's feed specification asks for one row per purchasable item or variant, with required fields such as item ID, title, description, URL, brand, availability and seller name. Merchants either upload a full catalogue snapshot by SFTP at least daily, preferably as Parquet files, or send products through OpenAI's feed API; OpenAI recommends a daily file plus API updates during the day, and small catalogues can use the API alone. ACP does not create the feed for you: your ecommerce platform, feed tool or Stripe's hosted service generates it from your catalogue. Delivery details are in which AI platforms accept content feeds.

What happened to Instant Checkout?

When OpenAI launched Instant Checkout with ACP in September 2025, it started with US Etsy sellers and said Shopify merchants would follow. Take-up was slow. In early 2026, OpenAI scaled the feature back; reports at the time said few merchants had gone live, and OpenAI said checkout was moving to its apps model. OpenAI's merchant page now describes ChatGPT as a discovery channel, with shoppers sent to the merchant's site or app to buy and no fees on those purchases. Its plugin guidelines say Instant Checkout remains in beta for select marketplace partners.

Other AI surfaces have taken different routes. Google launched its Universal Commerce Protocol in January 2026 for checkout in AI Mode and the Gemini app, and Microsoft offers Copilot Checkout. How ChatGPT's shopping has evolved is covered in how ChatGPT is turning into a shopping platform.

How do OpenAI ACP and merchant centers help products get discovered by AI?

Discovery comes from product data, not checkout. For ChatGPT, that means an approved product feed, plus crawlable product pages; one large study found most ChatGPT product cards drew on crawled web data rather than feeds. For Google's AI features, it means Merchant Center feeds feeding the Shopping Graph. For Copilot, Microsoft says Merchant Center feeds help inform organic results. Keeping all of these accurate and consistent is what gets products shown. Ranking factors are covered in how ChatGPT ranks shopping results.

Do online retailers need ACP schema to appear in AI commerce results?

No. ACP is a protocol for exchanging catalogue and checkout data between systems, not markup you add to web pages. To appear in AI shopping results:

  • Submit product feeds where platforms accept them: OpenAI, Google Merchant Center, Microsoft Merchant Center.
  • Keep product pages crawlable, with prices, availability and specifications in the HTML.
  • Add Schema.org Product markup, which crawlers and merchant centres read, as covered in how ecommerce brands can structure product data for AI recommendations.

ACP checkout endpoints matter only if you want agents to complete purchases with you directly, on surfaces that support it.

How can non-Shopify merchants connect their stores to AI shopping agents?

  • Apply to OpenAI's merchant programme and send a feed by SFTP or through the feed API. OpenAI accepts Google-compatible feeds.
  • Use Stripe's Agentic Commerce Suite, launched in December 2025. You connect your catalogue to Stripe, then choose in the Stripe Dashboard which AI agents to sell through. Stripe hosts the ACP endpoint and shares near real-time product, price and availability data. It was announced for rollout through the Stripe Dashboard and APIs, and through platforms including Wix, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Squarespace and commercetools.
  • Use a feed platform, such as Feedonomics, which syndicates catalogues to several AI surfaces.
  • Keep Google and Microsoft Merchant Center feeds current for Google's AI features and Copilot.

Shopify merchants get much of this through Shopify's own integrations, as covered in whether Shopify's default settings improve AI visibility.

Can Stripe merchants use the Agentic Commerce Protocol without Shopify?

Yes. ACP is an open standard, and Stripe's Agentic Commerce Suite is aimed at businesses on any platform that use Stripe. Keep expectations realistic: with ChatGPT's Instant Checkout limited, the practical benefit today is getting product data to agents consistently, and being ready for agents that do complete purchases.

What causes an Agentic Commerce Protocol product feed to fail validation?

OpenAI's documentation lists the common ingestion failures as missing required fields, outdated or non-standard field names, and malformed values. In practice, look for:

  • Missing required fields, such as availability or seller name.
  • Titles over 150 characters or descriptions over 5,000.
  • Invalid availability values; the specification accepts in stock, out of stock, pre-order, backorder and unknown.
  • Invalid GTINs, which must be 8, 12, 13 or 14 digits and should never be invented.
  • Conditional fields used wrongly, such as a return deadline without stating that returns are accepted.
  • Variant errors, where variants are not grouped consistently.
  • File problems: wrong encoding, unstable shard filenames, or uploads interrupted part-way.

Fix the source data rather than the exported file, so the next daily snapshot does not reintroduce the error.

We have not built an ACP integration ourselves. This page is based on Stripe's and OpenAI's documentation and announcements, and reporting on Instant Checkout.

What might this look like in practice?

Consider an illustrative outdoor apparel brand, Ilvstead Outfitters, on a custom platform with Stripe payments. It had assumed ACP checkout was needed to appear in ChatGPT. Instead, it applied to OpenAI's merchant programme and generated a daily Parquet feed from its product database, fixing 300 products with invented GTINs flagged during validation. It connected the same catalogue to Stripe's Agentic Commerce Suite for agents that support checkout. Within a month its jackets appeared in ChatGPT shopping results, with purchases completed on its own site, where it could track the orders.

What do people ask about the Agentic Commerce Protocol?

What is the Agentic Commerce Protocol?

An open standard from Stripe and OpenAI, now also backed by Meta, for how AI agents browse catalogues, check out and pay with businesses.

Can I still use Instant Checkout in ChatGPT?

OpenAI describes Instant Checkout as in beta for select marketplace partners. Most ChatGPT purchases complete on merchants' own sites.

Do I need ACP to appear in ChatGPT shopping?

No. An approved product feed and crawlable product pages are what matter for discovery.

Is ACP only for Shopify stores?

No. It is an open standard, and Stripe's Agentic Commerce Suite serves merchants on many platforms.
