Which AI Platforms Accept Content Feeds, and What Formats Do They Support?

Only product feeds have formal submission routes. OpenAI accepts product feeds for ChatGPT shopping as SFTP file uploads, preferring Parquet and also taking compressed JSONL, CSV and TSV files, or through its feed API. Google Merchant Center feeds power shopping in AI Mode and the Gemini app. Microsoft Merchant Center feeds help inform Copilot's shopping results, and Perplexity runs a merchant programme for product data. For articles, guides and other pages, no major AI assistant accepts an RSS or content feed. They crawl the web and draw on search indexes instead. A valid RSS or Atom feed still helps indirectly, because Google and Bing accept feeds as sitemaps, which speeds up discovery of new pages. Beyond that, content reaches AI tools through crawling, links and licensing deals.

Which platforms accept which feeds?

Platform Feed type Formats and delivery Where it is used
OpenAI (ChatGPT) Product feed SFTP file upload or API; Parquet preferred, also JSONL, CSV and TSV compressed with gzip; Google-compatible feeds accepted ChatGPT shopping results
Google Merchant Center Product feed Feed files, spreadsheets, API, or product data read from your site Shopping Graph, AI Mode, AI Overviews, Gemini app, Business Agent
Microsoft Merchant Center Product feed Feed files or imports Bing Shopping, Copilot shopping results
Perplexity Product data Merchant programme Perplexity shopping
Google and Bing Search Sitemaps, including RSS and Atom XML, RSS, mRSS, Atom, text Web indexes that AI features draw on
OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Perplexity Articles and pages No feed submission; crawling and search AI answers

What does OpenAI's product feed require?

OpenAI's commerce documentation describes a full-snapshot feed: a complete catalogue export treated as the source of truth, pushed to OpenAI by SFTP. Merchants can also send products through OpenAI's feed API: small catalogues can use the API alone, and promotions can only be sent that way.

  • Formats: Parquet is preferred, ideally with zstd compression. jsonl.gz, csv.gz and tsv.gz are also supported.
  • Cadence: at least daily.
  • Size: up to about 500,000 items per shard, with shard files under about 500 MB.
  • Updates: keep the same shard filenames and overwrite them in place; a product is removed only when it is left out of every shard in later snapshots.
  • Fields: required fields include item ID, title, description, URL, brand, availability and seller name; GTINs are optional but should never be invented.

OpenAI's merchant page says Shopify and Etsy catalogues are already integrated, and other merchants can apply. How the data is used is covered in how ChatGPT ranks shopping results.

What about Google and Microsoft?

  • Google Merchant Center feeds its Shopping Graph, which powers shopping in AI Mode, AI Overviews and the Gemini app, as well as Business Agent. Merchants can upload feed files, use spreadsheets or the Merchant API, or let Google read product data from their website's structured data. Merchant Center's newer conversational attributes, such as questions and answers, are aimed at AI surfaces. The details are in how Google Business Agent uses Merchant Center data.
  • Microsoft Merchant Center feeds Microsoft Shopping campaigns and free listings. Microsoft Advertising has said that product feeds from Merchant Center help inform organic Copilot results, and its commerce page now says a Merchant Center account and product feed are required to onboard to Copilot Checkout.

Does any AI assistant accept an RSS or content feed?

Not as a public submission route. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity find articles and pages by crawling and by searching indexes. None of them documents a way to submit an RSS feed, sitemap or content feed for citation. Content mainly reaches them in three ways:

  • Crawling by their search agents, such as OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot.
  • Search indexes they draw on, such as Google's for Gemini and AI Overviews, and Bing's for Copilot.
  • Licensing deals with large publishers, which sometimes include direct content delivery, but are negotiated rather than open.
  • Connectors such as MCP servers or ChatGPT apps, which documentation and software sites can offer so users can pull their content into Claude or ChatGPT. Users install these; they are not submitted as feeds.

Two newer mechanisms are worth watching. Cloudflare's AI Index, announced in private beta in 2025, would let AI builders subscribe to a site's content updates. And several platforms serve Markdown versions of pages to agents on request. Neither is a general feed submission today. Access controls are covered in what Cloudflare's AI Crawl Control tools do.

Does a valid XML RSS feed help LLMs index a website?

Indirectly. Google supports RSS, mRSS and Atom 1.0 feeds as sitemaps, and notes that they are often the easiest sitemap to provide, because most CMSs generate them automatically. Bing accepts feeds as sitemaps too. Submitting your feed in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools helps both engines find new and updated pages quickly, and AI features built on those indexes benefit.

What a feed does not do is send your content to ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity directly. No AI provider says its crawler reads RSS feeds for citations. A feed also has limits as a sitemap: Google notes that feed-based sitemaps can describe videos, but not images or news. Keep a full XML sitemap as well, and check the feed is valid, since a broken feed is ignored. Other discovery routes, such as IndexNow, are covered in whether IndexNow improves Perplexity visibility.

How do you keep several feeds consistent?

Stores that send product data to several platforms run into mismatches: a price updated in one feed but not another, or a product discontinued on the site but still listed elsewhere. AI answers then quote the stale version. To avoid that:

  • Generate every feed from one product database, rather than editing each platform separately.
  • Update on the same schedule, at least daily, and immediately for price or stock changes where a platform supports it.
  • Match the product page. Google's automatic item updates can change or disapprove listings when feed and page disagree.
  • Use the same identifiers everywhere, including GTINs and item IDs, so platforms recognise the same product.

What should different businesses submit?

  • Online stores: a product feed to Google Merchant Center and Microsoft Merchant Center, and to OpenAI if you are not on an integrated platform. Keep all three generated from one source of truth.
  • Publishers and content sites: XML sitemaps and your RSS or Atom feed in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools; allow AI search crawlers.
  • Local businesses: Google Business Profile, Bing Places and Apple Business listings, which act as structured feeds of business facts.
  • Software and documentation sites: sitemaps, clean HTML, optionally llms.txt, and an MCP server users can connect, as covered in how to add llms.txt on any CMS.

We have not submitted feeds to each platform ourselves. This page is based on each platform's documentation and announcements.

What might this look like in practice?

Consider an illustrative homeware store, Tovrmere Home, on a custom ecommerce platform. It already sent a feed to Google Merchant Center, but ChatGPT's shopping results never showed its products. It applied to OpenAI's merchant programme, then built a nightly Parquet export from the same product database and pushed it by SFTP. It also imported its Google feed into Microsoft Merchant Center. For its blog, it submitted the RSS feed and XML sitemap in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Within weeks its products began appearing in ChatGPT and Copilot shopping answers, while its care guides were cited through normal search.

What do people ask about AI content feeds?

Can I submit my blog's RSS feed to ChatGPT?

No. OpenAI offers no content feed submission. Its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, finds pages by crawling.

What formats does OpenAI accept for product feeds?

Parquet is preferred, and gzip-compressed JSONL, CSV and TSV are also supported, delivered by SFTP; OpenAI's feed API is the other route.

Does Google accept RSS feeds as sitemaps?

Yes. Google supports RSS 2.0, mRSS and Atom 1.0 feeds as sitemaps.

Do product feeds affect AI recommendations?

Yes, for shopping answers. ChatGPT, Google's AI features and Copilot use product feed data to show products.
