Does Submitting URLs Through IndexNow Improve Perplexity Visibility?
Not directly. Perplexity is not an IndexNow participant. The protocol's published list of participating engines covers Bing, Yandex, Seznam, Naver, Yep, the Internet Archive and Amazon's crawler, not Perplexity and not Google. A URL you submit is shared among those participants only. IndexNow can still help AI visibility in two ways. It speeds up indexing in Bing, whose index feeds Microsoft Copilot and other Bing-powered tools. It also helps a new domain's pages get discovered quickly, which makes them easier for other crawlers to find through links and search results. For Perplexity itself, what matters is letting PerplexityBot crawl your pages, publishing a sitemap, and earning links from sites it already visits. Archiving pages in the Wayback Machine has no documented effect on AI answers.
Which services does each tool reach?
| Tool | What it notifies or does | Effect on AI tools |
|---|---|---|
| IndexNow | Tells participating engines that a URL was added, updated or deleted | Faster Bing indexing, which feeds Copilot and other Bing-based tools; no direct effect on Perplexity or Google |
| Bing Webmaster Tools | Verifies your site with Bing, accepts sitemaps, shows indexing and AI Performance data | Helps Bing index you; shows citations in Microsoft's AI experiences |
| Wayback Machine | Archives snapshots of pages | No documented effect on AI answers |
| PerplexityBot access | Lets Perplexity crawl and index your pages | The main route into Perplexity's answers |
How does IndexNow work?
IndexNow lets a site tell search engines about changed URLs immediately, rather than waiting to be recrawled. You create a key, host it on your domain, and send URLs to any participating endpoint, which shares them with the other participants. According to the IndexNow FAQ:
- Submissions are shared across all IndexNow-enabled engines, whichever endpoint you use.
- Up to 10,000 URLs can be sent in one POST request.
- Submitting does not guarantee indexing. Each engine decides whether and when to crawl, based on crawl quota, scheduling and quality signals.
- It counts against crawl quota, so submit only real changes.
- It is not for back-filling. Submit recent additions, updates and deletions, not old changes.
- Plugins, CMSs and CDNs can handle keys and submissions for you.
Do Bing Webmaster Tools, IndexNow, and the Wayback Machine improve LLM visibility?
They help in different ways, and not equally:
- Bing Webmaster Tools: yes, for Bing-based AI. Microsoft Copilot grounds its answers in Bing's index, and Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report shows how often your pages are cited in Microsoft's AI experiences. Verifying your site, submitting a sitemap and fixing crawl errors there helps any AI tool that draws on Bing. More is in why Bing matters for AI search visibility and what Bing Webmaster Tools shows for AI.
- IndexNow: yes, for faster discovery by participants. Bing is the participant that matters most for AI answers. Amazon's crawler also participates, which may matter for Amazon's assistant, though Amazon has not said how it uses submissions.
- Wayback Machine: not in any documented way. The Internet Archive is now an IndexNow participant, so submissions can prompt it to archive pages. Snapshots preserve history and can help you prove what a page said on a date. But no AI search provider says it retrieves answers from the Wayback Machine, and archive copies are not treated as your live site.
How does Perplexity find pages, if not through IndexNow?
Perplexity runs its own crawler, PerplexityBot, which Perplexity says surfaces and links websites in its search results and is not used to train foundation models. It also has Perplexity-User for pages fetched when a user asks. Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot in robots.txt and permitting its published IP ranges. So to be found by Perplexity:
- Allow PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User in robots.txt and in your firewall.
- Publish a sitemap and link it from robots.txt.
- Link new pages from your own navigation and from pages that are already indexed.
- Earn links and mentions from sites Perplexity already visits often.
Perplexity has not documented any way to submit web page URLs for indexing, and we found no statement that it consumes IndexNow submissions. The one submission route it offers is for products: online stores can join its Merchant Program and share a product feed for Perplexity's shopping results. How its index works is covered in whether Perplexity has its own search index, what happens if you block its crawler in whether Perplexity requires PerplexityBot access to cite a website, and how it chooses sources in how Perplexity retrieves and cites sources in real time. Watch your server logs for PerplexityBot after publishing: its first visits are the clearest sign that Perplexity has found a new page.
How to use IndexNow to get a new domain’s answer-first pages discovered
A new domain has no crawl history, so search engines visit it rarely at first. IndexNow shortens that wait for participating engines. A practical sequence:
- Publish a small set of strong pages first, each answering one question clearly near the top, with a descriptive title.
- Verify the domain in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap.
- Turn on IndexNow through your CMS or SEO plugin, or through your CDN; Cloudflare's Crawler Hints can send IndexNow notifications automatically.
- Submit each page when it is published or meaningfully updated, not on a schedule.
- Check indexing in Bing Webmaster Tools a few days later.
- Build links from established sites, which is what brings crawlers such as PerplexityBot and Googlebot to a new domain.
- Register with Google Search Console too, since Google does not use IndexNow.
Speed of discovery is only the start. New pages still need to be the best answer, and new domains usually need outside links and mentions before AI tools cite them often.
What does IndexNow not do?
- It does not rank pages. It only tells engines to look.
- It does not reach Google or Perplexity.
- It does not fix blocked or low-quality pages. A page blocked by robots.txt, returning errors, or thin on content will not be indexed because you submitted it.
- It does not replace sitemaps. IndexNow handles changes; sitemaps give engines the full list.
We have not measured how IndexNow affects Perplexity or Copilot citations ourselves. This page is based on the IndexNow FAQ and participant list, Perplexity's crawler documentation and Bing's documentation.
What might this look like in practice?
Consider an illustrative new home energy advice site, Ostreth, launching 30 answer-first guides on heat pump costs and grants. It verified the domain in Bing Webmaster Tools and turned on IndexNow through its SEO plugin, and Bing indexed most guides within a week. Copilot began citing two of them for grant questions soon after. Perplexity took longer: nothing appeared until a regional news site and a consumer forum linked to the grants guide, after which PerplexityBot visits showed in the logs and Perplexity started citing it. The team kept IndexNow for updates, and focused its outreach on the sites Perplexity already cited.
What do people ask about IndexNow and AI search?
Does Perplexity use IndexNow?
It is not on IndexNow's list of participating engines, and Perplexity has not said it uses the submissions.
Does Google support IndexNow?
No. Google is not an IndexNow participant; use Search Console and sitemaps for Google.
Does IndexNow help ChatGPT or Copilot?
It speeds up Bing indexing. Copilot grounds answers in Bing, and ChatGPT search has used third-party providers including Bing, so faster Bing indexing can help indirectly.
Should I submit my pages to the Wayback Machine for AI visibility?
There is no documented AI benefit. Archiving is useful for keeping a record of past versions.
