Why Does Bing Matter for AI Search Visibility, and What Should You Optimize There?
Because Bing is the web search behind Microsoft Copilot, including Microsoft 365 Copilot. That product passed 30 million paid business seats in July 2026, and it sends short queries to Bing whenever it searches the web. One 2025 study also found ChatGPT's citations matched Bing's results more closely than Google's, though a larger study found little difference. The work is mostly free. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and read its AI Performance report. Submit changes through IndexNow, claim your Bing Places listing, and send product feeds to Microsoft Merchant Center. Avoid the NOARCHIVE tag if you want Copilot to use your pages. None of this replaces Google work, but it is the cheapest AI visibility gain most sites have not taken.
Where does Bing feed AI answers?
In three places that matter:
- Microsoft Copilot, the consumer assistant in Windows, Edge and the Copilot app, which grounds its answers in Bing search.
- Microsoft 365 Copilot, used at work inside Outlook, Word, Teams and other apps. Microsoft's support page explains that when web search is on, Copilot generates a short query from the prompt, sends it to Bing, and uses the results in its answer, with a Sources button showing the exact query and pages used.
- Other assistants. OpenAI says ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers. A February 2025 Seer study found more than 87% of ChatGPT search citations matched Bing's top 20 results for the same question, but an Ahrefs study of 15,000 prompts in July 2025 found ChatGPT's citations overlapped Bing's and Google's top 10 about equally, around 8% each. The detail is covered in whether ChatGPT search uses Google, Bing or its own index.
Bing's own share of searches is small next to Google's, but its reach through assistants is larger than that share suggests.
How can businesses reach the Microsoft 365 and Copilot audience through AI search?
By being findable in Bing when Copilot searches on a worker's behalf. Microsoft said in January 2026 that Microsoft 365 Copilot had 15 million paid seats, and in July 2026 that it had passed 30 million. These are business users asking work questions: suppliers, software, regulations, market data. When their organisation allows web search, Copilot turns their prompt into a short Bing query and cites what it finds.
That audience barely shows up in public chatbot traffic figures, because much of its use happens inside Microsoft 365 apps rather than on a website. For B2B companies, it is a reason to check how their pages perform in Bing for the short, plain queries Copilot generates, such as "payroll software construction UK" rather than a full conversational prompt. Admins can switch web search off for their organisation, so not every seat searches the web.
How to optimize Bing Places, indexing, and Bing settings for AI visibility
Four settings cover most of it.
Bing Webmaster Tools. Verify your site, or import it from Google Search Console, submit your sitemap and check for crawl errors. Its AI Performance report, in public preview since February 2026, shows how often your pages are cited in Copilot and Bing's AI answers, the grounding queries the AI used to find them, and, since June 2026, the intent behind those queries, topics and your citation share. More on the free reports is in whether Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools can track AEO for free.
IndexNow. A protocol that tells search engines when a page is added, changed or deleted. Submissions go to Bing and are shared with other participating engines, including Yandex, Naver, Seznam and Yep. Many CMS plugins and CDNs support it, so price changes and new pages reach Bing quickly instead of waiting for a crawl.
Bing Places for Business. Microsoft rebuilt it in October 2025 and moved it to bing.com/forbusiness, with a faster import from Google Business Profile that keeps name, hours and contact details, plus bulk editing for several locations. Microsoft says it is working on deeper integration with Bing Maps and Copilot.
Meta tags. Bing's guidelines say NOARCHIVE stops content being used in Copilot answers and grounding, while NOCACHE limits what can be shown to titles, snippets and URLs. Check that your CMS has not set them site-wide by accident.
Does Bing Merchant Center optimization improve AI platform visibility?
For Copilot, yes. Microsoft Advertising says product feeds from Merchant Center help inform organic Copilot results, and its commerce page now requires a Merchant Center account to onboard to Copilot Checkout. Copilot Checkout, launched in the US on Copilot.com with PayPal, Shopify and Stripe, lets shoppers buy inside Copilot while the retailer stays merchant of record. Microsoft offers an import from Google Merchant Center, so a retailer with a clean Google feed can often reuse it.
For other assistants, the effect is indirect. ChatGPT runs its own feed programme, and Google uses Google Merchant Center. The same feed quality work, such as accurate titles, identifiers, prices and availability, helps everywhere, but a Microsoft feed specifically reaches Microsoft's surfaces.
How do you optimize differently for Bing and Google AI search?
The fundamentals overlap, but a few differences are worth acting on:
| Bing and Copilot | Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery | IndexNow for instant change notices; sitemaps | Crawling and sitemaps; no IndexNow |
| AI reporting | AI Performance report with grounding queries and citation counts | Search Console shows AI feature impressions, without queries or answer text |
| Content controls | NOARCHIVE blocks Copilot use; NOCACHE limits display | nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet limit what is shown |
| Local data | Bing Places | Google Business Profile |
| Products | Microsoft Merchant Center feeds inform organic Copilot results | Google Merchant Center |
| Query style | Short Bing queries generated from prompts | Fan-out searches across many related queries |
Two practical consequences follow. Pages that answer a question plainly in the title and first paragraph suit the short queries Copilot generates. And Bing's grounding query data shows the phrases AI actually used to find you, which Google does not provide, so it is worth using even if Bing sends you little traffic.
Which Bing and Copilot tools should small businesses set up for AI visibility?
A short, free list:
- Bing Webmaster Tools, imported from Search Console, with your sitemap submitted.
- IndexNow, through your CMS plugin or CDN setting.
- Bing Places for Business, imported from your Google Business Profile, then checked for hours and categories.
- Microsoft Clarity, whose AI Visibility dashboard shows citations of your pages, grounding queries and AI referral traffic once the site is verified.
- Microsoft Merchant Center, if you sell products, importing your Google feed.
- A monthly check of the AI Performance report for your most-cited pages and the queries that found them.
What might this look like in practice?
Consider an illustrative UK health and safety training provider, Brackenfield Training, which sells mostly to businesses. It had never verified its site in Bing. After importing it from Search Console and enabling IndexNow through its CMS plugin, the AI Performance report showed its course pages cited in Copilot answers for grounding queries such as "fire marshal training requirements UK". Its pricing page was never cited, and it was marked NOARCHIVE by an old plugin setting. Brackenfield removed the tag, rewrote the page's opening to state course prices plainly, and saw the page appear in citations within a month.
What do people ask about Bing and AI search?
Does Microsoft Copilot use Bing?
Yes. Microsoft says Copilot generates a short query from your prompt and sends it to Bing when it searches the web.
Is IndexNow worth setting up?
Yes. It is free, and it tells Bing and other participating engines about changes as soon as they happen.
Can I see which AI answers cite my site in Bing?
Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report shows citations, grounding queries and cited pages across Copilot and Bing's AI experiences.
Does NOARCHIVE block Copilot?
Bing says NOARCHIVE prevents content being used in Copilot responses and grounding.
