How Fast Is AI Search Growing, and What Do Adoption Statistics Show?

AI search is growing quickly from a small base. OpenAI said in late September 2026 that ChatGPT has 1.2 billion weekly users, up from 900 million in February and 800 million in October 2025. Google says its AI Overviews reach more than 2.5 billion people a month and AI Mode more than 1 billion. In the US, Pew found about half of adults used AI chatbots in early 2026, up from a third in 2024. But Google still handles many times more searches than ChatGPT. AI assistants send well under 1% of website traffic, and only a few percent of ChatGPT conversations involve buying something. The trend is steep, the current share is modest, and much of AI's influence happens without a click.

How big is AI search now?

Monthly visits to generative AI sites 9.5 billion on average, up 70% year on year Similarweb, June 2025 to May 2026
AI share of website traffic 0.32% SE Ranking, 2026

These figures measure different things, which is why they cannot simply be compared. The section on reading statistics below explains the differences.

How many people use ChatGPT and Perplexity for search?

ChatGPT is by far the larger. OpenAI announced 900 million weekly active users in February 2026, passed 1 billion in July and reported 1.2 billion at its developer conference in September. Not all of that is search. In OpenAI's own study of ChatGPT use, published through the US National Bureau of Economic Research in 2025, "seeking information" made up about 24% of messages. Practical guidance and writing accounted for most of the rest. Perplexity is much smaller but built around search. Its chief executive said it handled 780 million queries in May 2025. Both are growing, but ChatGPT's user base is many times larger.

Which answer engines are the most popular right now?

By reach, Google's AI features lead, because they appear inside Google Search: AI Overviews reach more than 2.5 billion people a month. Among standalone assistants, ChatGPT and Gemini are the largest, each with around a billion users by their companies' counts. Pew's 2026 US survey found 44% of adults had used ChatGPT and 24% had used Gemini. Copilot, Meta AI, Claude, Perplexity and Grok follow at smaller scale. Popularity also differs by use: SE Ranking found ChatGPT sent about 75% of AI referral traffic to websites, Gemini about 12%, Perplexity about 7%, Copilot about 4% and Claude about 3%.

What share of the AI search market does ChatGPT have?

It depends on the measure, and the share is falling. Similarweb found ChatGPT's share of visits to generative AI websites fell from about 76% in June 2025 to about 53% in May 2026. Gemini rose from under 9% to around 27–28%, and Claude from about 2% to about 9%. By referral traffic sent to websites, ChatGPT still dominates at about three-quarters. And none of these counts include AI Overviews, which reach more people than any standalone assistant.

How does AI search compare with Google?

What share of total search volume does ChatGPT handle?

A small share of search, even though ChatGPT is huge. Google says it handles more than 5 trillion searches a year, roughly 14 billion a day. SparkToro and Datos estimated that in 2024 Google received about 373 times as many searches as ChatGPT. They counted only ChatGPT prompts that behave like searches. ChatGPT has grown a great deal since. OpenAI reported about 2.5 billion messages a day in mid-2025, and roughly a quarter of messages are information-seeking. A rough calculation puts ChatGPT's search-like activity at a few percent of Google's daily searches. The exact figure depends heavily on what counts as a search.

Traffic tells a similar story. SE Ranking found AI assistants sent about 0.32% of website visits in 2026, up from 0.24% in 2025 and 0.02% in 2024. Similarweb reported that visits to AI platforms grew by 28.6% in the US between January 2025 and January 2026, while referral traffic from them stayed flat. AI is taking a growing share of research, but little of it turns into clicks. Whether AI search is replacing Google is covered in whether AI search is replacing Google.

Who uses AI search?

How does AI search usage vary by age group?

Younger adults use AI far more, but older groups are catching up. In Pew's 2026 survey of US adults, 61% of 18–29-year-olds had used ChatGPT, compared with 55% of 30–49-year-olds, 37% of 50–64-year-olds and 19% of those 65 and older. Gemini showed a flatter pattern, used by 30% of the youngest group and 34% of 30–49-year-olds. About a quarter of all US adults said they used chatbots daily. Pew's 2025 survey found 58% of adults under 30 had ever used ChatGPT, up from 33% in 2023. OpenAI's own research found early gender gaps in ChatGPT use had largely closed by 2025.

What are people using AI search for?

What percentage of ChatGPT conversations have commercial intent?

Directly commercial conversations are a small share. OpenAI's usage study classified about 2% of ChatGPT messages as being about purchasable products. At around 2.5 billion daily messages in mid-2025, that is roughly 50 million shopping-related messages a day. Commercial influence runs wider than that. Information-seeking messages include product research, and practical guidance often shapes later purchases, such as advice on what to consider when choosing a mortgage. OpenAI launched a dedicated shopping research feature in November 2025, a sign of where it expects growth.

How many people use ChatGPT to shop or find someone to hire?

Surveys of AI users suggest shopping use is now common. Semrush's December 2025 survey of more than 1,000 US shoppers who use AI found 50% had bought something after using AI in their research. In the same survey, 64% had used ChatGPT and 49% Gemini in the past month. For hiring professionals, a 2026 survey of about 1,100 US consumers by a legal marketing agency found 42% would use ChatGPT to research a lawyer, up from 28% a year earlier. Scorpion's 2026 research found 22% of homeowners used AI tools when looking for home services. These surveys measure stated behaviour, often among people who already use AI, so they overstate use across the whole population.

What percentage of people use AI for business recommendations?

Local recommendation use has jumped. BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found 45% of consumers had used AI tools for local business recommendations, up from 6% in 2025. Its separate 2026 search behaviour survey found 58% had tried AI for local recommendations and 31% did so at least monthly. Trust was limited: only 18% trusted the answer enough to act without checking, and 82% went to Google to confirm. So AI increasingly shapes the shortlist, while search, maps and reviews still confirm the choice.

How fast has AI search grown?

The growth curve is steep on every measure:

Measure Earlier Later
ChatGPT weekly users 100 million (November 2023) 800 million (October 2025), 900 million (February 2026), 1.2 billion (September 2026)
ChatGPT daily messages About 1 billion (December 2024) More than 2.6 billion (June 2025)
AI Overviews monthly users 1.5 billion (spring 2025) More than 2.5 billion (June 2026)
US adults using AI chatbots 33% (2024) 49% (February 2026)
Visits to generative AI websites Baseline (mid-2025) Up 70% year on year (May 2026)
AI share of website traffic 0.02% (2024) 0.32% (2026)

Two patterns stand out. First, use per person is growing faster than the number of people. OpenAI's research found ChatGPT message volume grew 5.8 times in the year to June 2025, while users grew 3.2 times. Similarweb found visits to AI websites grew faster than unique visitors between 2025 and 2026. People who start using AI tend to use it more over time. Second, growth in usage is running well ahead of growth in clicks to websites. That gap is where most of the measurement problems for businesses come from.

How do work and business buyers use AI search?

Most consumer ChatGPT use is personal. OpenAI's study found non-work messages rose from about 53% to 73% of the total between mid-2024 and mid-2025. But business buying is where AI research moves fastest. Forrester's 2024 buyer survey found B2B buyers adopting AI-powered search at three times the rate of consumers, and its State of Business Buying 2026 study of about 18,000 buyers found 94% use AI somewhere in their buying process. Workplace assistants built into office software, such as Copilot and Gemini in Google Workspace, add research that never appears in consumer statistics. For B2B companies, adoption figures from consumer surveys understate how much their buyers rely on AI.

Does adoption differ by country?

Yes, and the fastest growth is outside the richest markets. OpenAI's research found ChatGPT usage growing much faster in middle-income countries than in high-income ones. Google has expanded AI Mode to many more languages, including Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean and Brazilian Portuguese in September 2025. In some markets, telecom bundles have given millions of people free access to paid AI plans. Figures from US surveys, which dominate published research, are a poor guide to markets such as India, Brazil or Indonesia. Businesses selling internationally should test AI answers in each market's language rather than assume US patterns apply.

How should you read AI adoption statistics?

  • Check the unit. Weekly users, monthly users, visits, messages, searches and "ever used" are all different. A billion monthly users is not a billion searches.
  • Check the population. Surveys of "people who use AI" give much higher figures than surveys of all adults.
  • Check who published it. Companies report their own milestones; tool vendors and agencies publish studies that support their services. Independent researchers and panels are more reliable.
  • Check the date. The market changes within months. Figures from 2024 are already history.
  • Separate usage from traffic. AI can influence a decision without sending a visit, so low referral numbers do not mean low influence.

How much traffic AI actually sends is covered in how much website traffic AI search engines actually send.

What do the numbers mean for businesses?

For most businesses, AI search is already a real part of how customers research, especially younger customers and those choosing local services or considered purchases. It is not yet a large traffic source, and Google remains the main place people confirm their choices. The sensible response is to treat AI answers as a shortlist-maker. Make sure assistants describe you accurately, earn a place in the sources they rely on, and keep search, reviews and your website strong for the confirming step.

What do people ask about AI search growth?

Is AI search growing faster than Google?

In percentage terms, yes, by a wide margin. In absolute volume, Google still handles far more searches.

Is ChatGPT losing ground to Gemini?

By share of visits to AI websites, yes. Gemini's share rose sharply between 2025 and 2026, while ChatGPT's user numbers still grew.

Do older people use AI search?

Fewer do, but use is rising in every age group. In 2026, about one in five US adults aged 65 and older had used ChatGPT.

How much of AI use is about shopping?

Directly, a few percent of conversations. Indirectly, much more, since research and advice shape later purchases.

Which AI statistic should I use in a business case?

Use figures for your own audience where possible: the share of your customers who say they used AI, your AI referral traffic and how often assistants name you. For market context, prefer independent surveys such as Pew's over vendor claims, and state the unit and date next to every number.
