How Much Website Traffic Do AI Search Engines Actually Send?

AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity send a small but fast-growing share of website traffic. An SE Ranking study published in June 2026 found they accounted for 0.32% of all website traffic, up from 0.02% in 2024. Conductor's 2026 benchmarks, covering ten industries, put AI referrals at 1.08% of traffic on average. It was highest in information technology at 2.8%. ChatGPT sends most of it, around three-quarters or more depending on the study. Google still sends far more traffic overall, including clicks from its own AI Overviews and AI Mode, which analytics count as ordinary Google traffic. The number understates AI's influence, because most AI answers are read without a click. The visits that do arrive often convert better than average.

What percentage of website traffic comes from LLMs?

Study What it measured AI share of website traffic
SE Ranking (June 2026) Referral traffic from AI search engines to websites, 2024–2026 0.32% in 2026, up from 0.24% in 2025 and 0.02% in 2024
Conductor 2026 AEO/GEO Benchmarks 3.3 billion sessions across ten industries, May–September 2025 1.08% on average; IT 2.80%, consumer staples 1.91%

Both figures cover visits from assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Claude. Neither includes clicks from Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, which arrive as Google organic traffic.

What are typical AI referral traffic levels, and are there reliable benchmarks?

The honest benchmark is a range: most sites see well under 1% of traffic from AI assistants. Sites in technology, software and research-heavy categories see more, often a few percent. The studies differ because they sample different sites. Conductor's data comes from its customers, mostly larger brands in ten industries. SE Ranking's covers a broader set of websites. The two are not directly comparable. Treat both as context rather than targets.

A more useful benchmark is your own trend. Measure AI referrals as a share of total sessions monthly, by assistant and by landing page, and compare against the same months last year. You can read Conductor's benchmark report for the industry breakdown.

Which AI platform sends the most referral traffic to websites?

ChatGPT, by a wide margin. SE Ranking's 2026 study put the shares of AI referral traffic at:

Assistant Share of AI referral traffic (SE Ranking, 2026)
ChatGPT 74.78%
Gemini 11.56%
Perplexity 7.23%
Microsoft Copilot 3.51%
Claude 2.62%

Conductor's benchmark, using 2025 data from its customers, found 87.4% of AI referrals came from ChatGPT. The difference reflects different samples and dates. Both agree on the order at the top.

Which AI assistant sends the most referral traffic: ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity?

ChatGPT sends the most, but its share is falling as others grow. The biggest change in 2026 came in May, when ChatGPT started making brand names clickable inside answers: its referral traffic jumped by more than a third in a month, and most of the new visits landed on home pages. SE Ranking found ChatGPT's share dropped from 79.74% in 2025 to 74.78% in 2026, although its traffic still grew 27% year on year. Claude grew fastest among the top five, up 320% from 2025 to 2026 from a small base, and Gemini grew 231% to overtake Perplexity as the second-largest source. Perplexity sends less in total but can matter more for research-heavy topics, where its users click through to sources more often. Your own mix may differ, so check your analytics before prioritising one engine.

Does Google or ChatGPT Search send more website traffic in 2026?

Google, by far. Google Search remains the largest source of website visits for most sites, and AI assistants together send well under the volume of Google organic search. Google says its AI search features send billions of clicks to websites every week. It has also said total organic clicks from Search have been relatively stable, while the share of higher-quality clicks has risen. Independent data is less reassuring about click-through rates: when AI Overviews appear, fewer people click.

Two points complicate the comparison. Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode appear in analytics as Google organic, so "AI traffic" figures from assistants leave out Google's AI features entirely. And both Google and ChatGPT increasingly answer without a click, so traffic understates how often each surface influences a buyer.

How fast is AI referral traffic growing month over month?

Growth has mostly been steady month to month, with occasional jumps when an engine changes how it links, such as ChatGPT's 36.7% one-month rise in May 2026, and large over a year or two:

  • Conductor found AI referral traffic grew by around 1% a month on average across ten industries, between May and September 2025.
  • SE Ranking found AI traffic to websites grew about 16 times from 2024 to 2026. As a share of all traffic, it rose from 0.02% to 0.32%.
  • Individual sites often see sharper jumps when they start being cited for popular questions, and drops when engines change sources.

For planning, assume continued growth but from a small base, and watch your own month-on-month trend by assistant.

What evidence shows that AI search sends referral traffic, and that it matters?

Beyond the volume studies above, several findings speak to the value of AI visits:

  • Engagement: SE Ranking found visitors referred by AI engines spent 68% more time on websites than visitors from traditional organic search.
  • Conversion value: Semrush reported in 2025 that the average visitor from AI search was worth 4.4 times the average organic search visitor, based on conversion rate.
  • Intent: people often arrive from an assistant after comparing options in the conversation, so they are further along in deciding.

The evidence is strongest for volume trends and engagement. Conversion value varies a lot by business, so measure it on your own site.

What does AI referral traffic look like on a typical site?

Take a business website with 50,000 sessions a month. At the SE Ranking average of 0.32%, AI assistants would send about 160 sessions a month; at Conductor's 1.08%, about 540. For a software company in the IT sector at 2.8%, the figure would be around 1,400.

Now apply value. If the site converts organic visitors to enquiries at 2%, those 160–540 AI sessions would produce three to eleven enquiries a month at the organic rate. If AI visitors convert better, as several studies suggest, the number rises. For a business where one enquiry is worth thousands, that is material. For a publisher paid by page views, it is not. The same small percentage can mean very different things, which is why value per visit matters more than the share of sessions.

Industry matters too. Conductor found the highest AI shares in information technology and consumer staples. Categories where people research, compare and ask detailed questions tend to see more AI referrals than categories driven by local, immediate or habitual purchases.

Why does my website get little or no traffic from AI search engines?

  • You are not cited. Check whether assistants mention or link to you for your buyers' questions.
  • You are cited, but the answer is complete. For simple facts, people rarely click.
  • Your category is not researched in AI assistants much yet, as in some local and traditional sectors.
  • Crawlers are blocked in robots.txt or by your CDN, so assistants are much less likely to fetch or cite your pages.
  • Attribution is lost. Visits from apps, or where people copy a name and search for it, often show up as direct or branded search traffic rather than AI referrals.
  • Long buying cycles. In B2B, an AI answer may lead to a visit weeks later through another channel.

A site can have real AI visibility and still record few AI referrals. That is why citation tracking and "how did you hear about us" answers matter alongside analytics.

How do you measure AI referral traffic properly?

  1. Use GA4's AI Assistant channel. GA4's default channel group now puts visits from ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and similar assistants in an "AI Assistant" channel; earlier data is not reclassified, so for year-on-year comparisons build a custom channel grouping referrers such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com and claude.ai.
  2. Watch for tagged links: ChatGPT adds a utm_source=chatgpt.com parameter to many links it shows, which helps attribution.
  3. Report by landing page to see which pages assistants send people to.
  4. Track conversions from the AI channel, not just sessions.
  5. Add self-reported attribution to forms and calls: "How did you hear about us?" with an AI assistant option.
  6. Use Search Console's Generative AI performance report to see impressions in Google's AI features, since those clicks are otherwise merged with organic.
  7. Compare with citation tracking to see whether referrals follow visibility.

In Google Analytics 4, a custom channel group rule using a regular expression on the session source works well. For example, chatgpt\.com|chat\.openai\.com|perplexity\.ai|gemini\.google\.com|copilot\.microsoft\.com|claude\.ai. Place the AI channel above the standard Referral channel so these visits are not absorbed into it, and review the list every few months as new assistants appear.

When reporting to leadership, show three lines together: AI referral sessions and conversions, AI visibility for your question set, and Search Console impressions in AI features. The combination tells a truer story than any one of them, especially when traffic is small but visibility is rising.

How to relate visibility metrics to traffic is covered in how to correlate AI visibility metrics with website traffic.

Which pages tend to receive AI referrals?

AI assistants link to pages that support specific parts of their answers, so referrals concentrate on a few page types:

  • Pages answering specific questions, such as detailed guides, troubleshooting articles and explainers with concrete steps.
  • Product, pricing and comparison pages, when people ask what something costs or how options differ.
  • Original research and data, which assistants cite as the source of a figure.
  • Documentation and help articles, for software and technical products.
  • Local and service pages with clear details, for "who can do X near Y" questions.

Engines cite deep pages as evidence, but since ChatGPT made brand names clickable in May 2026, most AI visitors arrive on the home page: about 60% of AI-referred traffic lands there, against 17% from organic search. Make sure your home page says plainly what you do, for whom and at what price, and routes visitors to the page that matches what they were told. If your AI referrals land mainly on one or two deeper pages, those pages are doing the work; protect them and build more like them.

Why do AI referrals rise and fall so suddenly?

AI referral traffic is more volatile than organic search traffic. Engines change models, retrieval systems and preferred sources, and a page that was cited for a popular question can drop out overnight. The switch of Google's AI Overviews to Gemini 3 in January 2026, for example, changed which pages they cited. Individual pages also gain sudden referrals when a new question becomes popular. Read AI referrals over three-month periods rather than week to week, split them by assistant and landing page, and check citation tracking when a large change appears. That shows whether you lost the citation or the question simply became less popular.

Is AI SEO a fad because LLM traffic is small?

No, but it should be kept in proportion. Traffic is the wrong single measure of AI search, for three reasons:

  1. Influence comes before clicks. Buyers form shortlists inside AI answers; the brands named there benefit even without a visit.
  2. Zero-click behaviour is spreading. About two-thirds of US Google searches ended without a click in early 2026, according to SparkToro.
  3. The visits that do come are valuable and growing, from a small base.

At the same time, 0.3–1% of traffic does not justify abandoning SEO, which still drives most visits and feeds most AI answers. The sensible position is to treat AI visibility as part of search strategy, measured by citations, mentions and conversions as well as clicks. Whether AI search is reducing organic traffic overall is covered in whether AI search is reducing organic website traffic.

What do people ask about AI referral traffic?

Why does ChatGPT traffic show up as direct traffic?

Visits from the ChatGPT app, or from links opened in ways that strip the referrer, can arrive without a source. The utm_source parameter helps where present.

Are AI Overview clicks counted as AI traffic?

Not in analytics. They are counted as Google organic traffic. Search Console's Generative AI report shows their impressions.

Should I expect AI traffic to replace Google traffic?

Not in the near term. AI referrals are growing but remain a small fraction of search traffic for most sites.

Which pages get the most AI referral traffic?

Mostly the home page, since ChatGPT links brand names directly; after that, pages that answer specific questions, product and pricing pages, and original research that assistants cite.
