Which Tools Do Teams Use to Track AI Referrals and Attribution?
Most teams combine three kinds of tool. Web analytics now groups AI visits natively. GA4 has had an AI Assistant channel since May 2026 and Matomo since late 2025, and Plausible, HubSpot and Microsoft Clarity have their own AI referral views. Commerce platforms and CRMs tie those visits to orders and leads. AI visibility trackers cover the other half: mentions and citations that never become a click. No analytics tool can track a visit where someone read an AI answer and came back later without a referrer. A few AI visibility platforms, such as Goodie, offer modelled estimates of this "influenced" demand, but those are estimates, not tracked visits. So most teams add a "how did you hear about us" question and treat tracked AI referrals as a floor.
Which tools cover what?
| Category | Examples | What they track | What they miss |
|---|---|---|---|
| Web analytics | GA4, Matomo, Plausible, PostHog | AI referral visits, engagement, conversions | Visits without a referrer; Google's own AI features |
| Marketing and CRM | HubSpot | AI referral visits tied to contacts and deals | Leads whose first touch had no referrer |
| Behaviour and bot analytics | Microsoft Clarity | AI referral share, citations in Microsoft's AI, bot activity | Other assistants' citations |
| Commerce | Shopify reports, ShopifyQL | Orders by referrer and AI channel | Orders influenced without a click |
| CDN and logs | Cloudflare AI Crawl Control, server logs | Crawler activity; referrals on paid Cloudflare plans | Human intent |
| Search | Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools | AI Overview and AI Mode impressions; Copilot citations | Other assistants |
| AI visibility trackers | Peec AI, Profound, Scrunch, Goodie and others | Mentions, citations, share of voice in sampled answers; some (Peec AI, Profound, Goodie) also import AI referral visits, and Peec AI and Goodie tie them to conversions or revenue | Influence on people who never click, except as a modelled estimate |
Is there an analytics platform with native AI attribution?
For referrals, yes, several. For attribution in the wider sense, no.
Native AI referral channels now exist in the main web analytics tools:
- GA4 added an AI Assistant channel to its default channel group in May 2026. Google's help page says it covers arrivals from sources such as ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Copilot and Grok, with the medium set to
ai-assistant. It excludes Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, which stay in Organic Search, and it is not applied to historical data. - Matomo introduced a dedicated AI Assistants channel type in version 5.5.0, in October 2025, grouping visits from tools such as ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity. It identifies them from referrer information.
- Plausible automatically groups visits from ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and other known assistants into an AI Assistants channel.
- HubSpot shows an AI Referrals category in its traffic analytics, covering assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity.
- PostHog calculates a channel type from the referring domain and UTM tags, and supports custom channel types.
- Microsoft Clarity reports AI referral traffic as a share of visits in its AI Visibility dashboards, alongside citations in Microsoft's AI experiences and bot activity.
What none of them does is credit an AI answer that influenced a visit without a referrer. If someone reads about you in ChatGPT, then searches your brand on Google two days later, every tool records Google. Setting up the GA4 channel and custom groups is covered in how to track ChatGPT and other AI referrals in GA4.
Which tools connect AI visits to revenue?
- CRMs such as HubSpot record the original source of a contact, so an AI referral that becomes a lead stays attached to the deal.
- Commerce platforms such as Shopify record the referrer and UTM values on each order, and show AI channel attribution for orders from AI shopping integrations. The details are in how to track ecommerce orders that come from ChatGPT.
- Call tracking and forms can capture AI-referred phone calls and enquiries, as covered in how to track leads that came from AI answers.
Which tools show AI influence without a click?
- AI visibility trackers run a fixed set of prompts through assistants and record whether you are mentioned or cited, and who is named instead. They measure presence in sampled answers, not visits.
- Google Search Console's Generative AI performance report shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode by page. Clicks from those features are counted inside ordinary Organic Search, as covered in how to track clicks from Google AI Overviews.
- Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report shows citations of your pages in Microsoft Copilot and Bing's AI summaries.
- Branded search trends in Search Console can reflect AI exposure that never produced a referral.
Some AI visibility tools also connect to GA4 or server logs to join citations with visits, as covered in Goodie vs Scrunch for tracking cited pages and AI referral visits.
Why do referral numbers undercount?
- Missing referrers. Some apps and in-app browsers do not pass one, and copied links arrive as direct.
- Partial tagging. OpenAI says ChatGPT adds
utm_source=chatgpt.comto links, but tests have found links without it. - Consent banners. Visits before consent may lose their source.
- Delayed visits. Many people act later, through search or by typing your address.
- Google's AI features are counted as Organic Search, not as AI.
That is why self-reported attribution matters. Tally, the form builder, found its onboarding survey showed far more users discovering it through AI than its referral tracking did.
What stack suits which team?
| Team | Minimum stack |
|---|---|
| Small business | GA4 or Plausible with the AI channel; "how did you hear about us" on forms; Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools |
| Ecommerce store | The above, plus platform order reports by referrer and AI channel, and a post-purchase question |
| B2B software | The above, plus CRM original-source tracking, and an AI visibility tracker for key buying questions |
| Agency | Per-client analytics with the AI channel, a multi-client visibility tracker, and a monthly report joining both |
Multi-client set-ups are covered in how agencies track AI visibility across multiple clients and locations, and Clarity in whether Microsoft Clarity's AI visibility dashboard improves GEO.
How should you report AI attribution?
- Tracked AI referrals by assistant, with conversions and revenue.
- Self-reported AI discovery from forms and surveys, as a share of new customers.
- AI visibility for a fixed prompt set, including citations and mentions.
- Google AI impressions from Search Console, and Copilot citations from Bing.
- Branded search and direct traffic trends.
Present the tracked figure as the floor and the survey share as the likely range.
We have not audited these tools side by side on client accounts. This page is based on each vendor's documentation and help pages.
What might this look like in practice?
Consider an illustrative project management software company, Wembion, whose board asked how much revenue came from AI. GA4's AI Assistant channel showed 2% of sign-ups, mostly from ChatGPT. HubSpot's original-source field matched that for closed deals. But the sign-up survey showed 11% of new customers naming an AI assistant, and Search Console's generative AI report showed rising impressions on its comparison pages. Wembion reported 2% as tracked revenue, 11% as self-reported influence, and tracked both monthly alongside its AI visibility share for 40 buying questions.
What do people ask about AI attribution tools?
Does GA4 track ChatGPT traffic automatically?
Yes. Since May 2026, GA4's AI Assistant channel groups visits from ChatGPT and other assistants, though not Google's AI Overviews or AI Mode.
Which analytics tools have an AI channel?
GA4, Matomo, Plausible and HubSpot all group AI assistant referrals, and PostHog supports custom channel types.
Can any tool track AI influence without a click?
Not directly. Use AI visibility trackers, Search Console AI impressions and customer surveys.
Why does my AI referral traffic look so small?
Many AI-influenced visits arrive without a referrer, or later through search, so tracked referrals undercount.
