How Does Shopify Agentic Storefronts Work With ChatGPT and Other AI Shopping Agents?
Agentic Storefronts is Shopify's way of putting merchants' products into AI shopping assistants without separate integrations. Shopify shares eligible products through Shopify Catalog with ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, and through its Google channel or Merchant Center with Google AI Mode and Gemini, and it now also lists Meta surfaces such as Muse. When a shopper asks an assistant for a product, the assistant can show the store's items. In ChatGPT the purchase happens on the store's own checkout, in an in-app browser or a new tab. In Google's assistants, Copilot and Meta, stores with direct checkout switched on can sell inside the assistant through Shopify-powered checkout. Shopify announced the feature in December 2025 and made it active by default for eligible stores in March 2026.
How does it work, channel by channel?
| Channel | How products get there | Where the shopper pays |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Shopify Catalog | The store's own checkout, in ChatGPT's in-app browser or a new tab |
| Google AI Mode and Gemini | Google & YouTube channel or Google Merchant Center | Shopify-powered direct checkout in the assistant, via UCP, if activated; select US shops |
| Microsoft Copilot | Shopify Catalog | Direct checkout in Copilot if activated |
| Meta, such as Muse | Shopify Catalog | Direct checkout if activated |
Orders from AI channels appear in Shopify admin with channel or referrer attribution, and Shopify says merchants keep the customer relationship and post-purchase experience. To use the feature, merchants must accept Shopify's Agentic Storefronts supplemental terms. Shopify says there are no transaction fees beyond standard processing rates.
When did Shopify launch Agentic Storefronts, and what changed?
Shopify introduced Agentic Storefronts in its Winter '26 Edition on December 10, 2025, naming ChatGPT, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot as the first channels. On March 24, 2026, it announced that millions of merchants could sell to ChatGPT users, with products discoverable by default and no separate apps or integrations. It also said thousands of merchants were already selling in Copilot, select brands were selling in AI Mode and the Gemini app through UCP, and it made its Agentic plan publicly available for brands that do not use Shopify for their store.
Three things changed for merchants along the way:
- Default on. Eligible stores were opted in, which surprised some merchants who expected to choose.
- ChatGPT became a referrer, not a checkout. OpenAI moved away from standalone in-chat checkout, so ChatGPT now sends shoppers to the store, as covered in what ChatGPT Instant Checkout means for retailers.
- The channel list shifted. Shopify's current help page lists ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta. Perplexity, named at launch, is not on that list.
Which stores are eligible?
Shopify's guidance on how agentic commerce works says ChatGPT and Copilot are open to Catalog merchants selling to US buyers, wherever the store is based, while AI Mode and Gemini checkout are for select US-based shops selling to US buyers. Eligible products are included in Shopify Catalog by default. Stores on the Agentic plan, which keeps an existing non-Shopify store, have direct checkout switched off by default.
Can merchants opt out of ChatGPT agentic storefronts?
Yes, though the setting is not obvious. Shopify's help centre gives these steps:
- In Shopify admin, go to Sales channels, then Agentic.
- Turn off Allow Shopify to manage for me.
- Click ChatGPT.
- Turn off Shopify Catalog access.
The same approach applies to Copilot. Shopify notes that once Catalog access is off, third-party agentic channels cannot access your products through Shopify Catalog from that point, and that this can take some time to take effect. It also warns that products may still be displayed through other means. ChatGPT can still find public product pages by crawling the web, so switching off the channel is not the same as disappearing from ChatGPT. To block crawling as well, you would need to change your robots.txt, which also removes you from ChatGPT's search results.
Before opting out, consider what you give up. Shopify claims new buyers order through AI channels at nearly twice the rate of other channels; that is Shopify's figure, not an independent one. Merchants with pricing agreements, restricted products or brand controls have the strongest reasons to limit channels. To keep a single product out of every agentic channel, including Shop, Shopify says to set its status to Unlisted or use the seo.hidden metafield. Both also hide the product from your sitemap, from search engines such as Google and from your store search. Products sold only to B2B or wholesale customers are excluded automatically when Shopify can detect them; custom B2B setups may not be detected.
How does it differ from connecting to each assistant yourself?
Without Shopify, a merchant would apply to each platform separately: submit a product feed to OpenAI through its merchant page, set up Microsoft Merchant Center and a checkout partner for Copilot, and add UCP checkout through Google Merchant Center. OpenAI's merchant page says Shopify catalogues are already integrated, with no application needed. The trade-off is control: Shopify decides the default channels and the data format, while a direct integration lets a large retailer shape its own presence, for example with a ChatGPT app, which OpenAI describes as optional and best suited to larger merchants.
What about stores outside the US?
ChatGPT and Copilot are open to Catalog merchants selling to US buyers wherever the store is based, so a UK or Canadian brand shipping to the US can take part. Checkout in AI Mode and Gemini is limited to select US-based shops, though Google has said UCP-powered checkout will expand to Canada and Australia, and later the UK.
How do you get the most from it?
- Complete product data. Titles, descriptions, variants, GTINs, prices, stock and policies travel through Catalog. Shopify's readiness scanner checks much of this, as covered in the Shopify readiness tool review.
- Review channel settings under Sales channels, then Agentic, so each channel matches your strategy.
- Decide on direct checkout for Google, Copilot and Meta, weighing conversion against less time on your own site.
- Watch attribution for AI-channel orders in Shopify admin, and agent visits to your site, as covered in whether stores can track AI agent interactions.
- Check the result by asking each assistant about your products.
How the underlying protocols compare is covered in ACP vs UCP, and Microsoft's side in connecting catalogues to Copilot shopping.
We have not run a store through Agentic Storefronts. This page is based on Shopify's help centre, its December 2025 and March 2026 announcements, and its agentic commerce guide.
What might this look like in practice?
Consider an illustrative outdoor apparel brand, Morvley Supply, that noticed orders tagged with ChatGPT referral attribution in March 2026 without having set anything up. The team reviewed Sales channels, then Agentic, kept ChatGPT and Copilot on, and turned on direct checkout for Google after checking its return policy was clear. It excluded a limited-edition jacket sold only to members. The team then filled in missing sizes and materials for its top 50 products and tracked AI-channel orders monthly.
