How to Add an llms.txt File to the Site Root on Squarespace

On Squarespace version 7.1 sites, open the SEO/AI Visibility panel, click SEO Settings, then the LLMS.txt tab. Paste your file's text into the field and click Save, and Squarespace serves it at yourdomain.com/llms.txt. The file is off by default and, unlike Wix's, is not generated for you, so you write and maintain the content yourself. Version 7.0 sites do not have the setting. Squarespace's own help page says it cannot advise on the content, because llms.txt is a proposed standard still in development. The evidence that the file helps AI visibility is weak, so a short, accurate version is enough.

How do you add it?

According to Squarespace's help centre:

  1. Check your site version. The llms.txt setting is available on version 7.1 sites.
  2. Open the SEO/AI Visibility panel.
  3. Click SEO Settings, then the LLMS.txt tab.
  4. Paste your text into the field. Adding text is what enables the file.
  5. Click Save.
  6. Visit yourdomain.com/llms.txt to check it loads.

To remove it later, open the same tab, click Delete, then Save.

What should you put in it?

The llms.txt proposal is a Markdown file with your site's name as a heading, a one-line summary, and lists of your most useful pages with short notes. For a small Squarespace business, a starter might look like this, with the paths replaced by your own pages:

# Hollow Oak Pottery

> Hand-thrown stoneware and pottery classes in Bath, UK. Studio open Tuesday to Saturday.

## Key pages
- [Classes and prices](/classes): beginner, wheel and glazing courses, from £45
- [Shop](/shop): mugs, bowls and planters, made in the studio
- [Visit us](/visit): address, opening hours and parking
- [FAQs](/faqs): booking, cancellations, gift vouchers and delivery

## Optional
- [About the studio](/about): our story and makers

Keep it factual, point only to pages that exist, and update it when prices, hours or key pages change. A fuller guide to the format is in how to write an llms.txt file.

How do you keep it accurate?

Because Squarespace does not update the file for you, it can drift from your site. A few habits prevent that:

  • Review it with your pages. Whenever you change prices, hours or your main services, open the LLMS.txt tab and update the matching lines.
  • Check the links. Visit each page listed in the file after a site redesign, since renamed pages leave dead links behind.
  • Keep one source of truth. Copy facts such as opening hours from your site, not from memory, so the two never disagree.
  • Fetch it occasionally with a command-line tool or browser to confirm it still loads, especially after domain or plan changes.

A stale file that lists old prices is worse than no file, because it gives any tool that reads it the wrong facts.

What about version 7.0 sites?

The built-in setting is only for 7.1. Before Squarespace added it, some owners uploaded a text file to the asset library and used URL Mappings to redirect /llms.txt to the file's address. That serves the file from a different location through a redirect rather than at your root, and there is no evidence AI tools rely on it. If llms.txt matters to you, moving to 7.1 is the cleaner route, but it is not a reason to migrate on its own.

Does it help your Squarespace site appear in AI answers?

Probably not much, for now:

  • Google does not use it for Search, including AI Overviews and AI Mode.
  • Few bots request it. An Ahrefs study of 2026 server data found 97% of about 38,000 valid llms.txt files received no requests.
  • It is not access control. Allowing or blocking AI crawlers is done in robots.txt and Squarespace's Crawlers settings, not in llms.txt.

It may become more useful as AI agents develop, and it costs little to maintain a short version. The evidence is covered in whether llms.txt improves AI search visibility.

What matters more on Squarespace?

  • The AI crawler setting. Squarespace's "Block known artificial intelligence crawlers" box is off by default. If it is ticked, it blocks a list of crawlers that includes DuckAssistBot, which DuckDuckGo uses for AI answers.
  • Page content. A page per service with prices, hours and FAQs in text, not images.
  • Structured data through code injection on plans that support it.
  • Squarespace's AI Visibility tool, which checks how ChatGPT and Gemini mention you for suggested prompts.
  • Listings and reviews beyond your site.

Platform comparisons are in which website builder is best for AEO, and Wix's automatic approach in whether you can add llms.txt on Wix.

We have not tested Squarespace's llms.txt setting across sites ourselves. This page is based on Squarespace's help centre and published studies.

What might this look like in practice?

Consider an illustrative wedding photographer, Stavumb Studio, on Squarespace 7.1. The owner pasted a 12-line llms.txt listing packages, the booking page and a FAQ, and saved it in two minutes. Checking the site's crawler settings at the same time, she found the AI crawler block had been ticked by a previous designer. Unticking it, and rewriting the packages page so prices were in text rather than an image, did more for how AI assistants described her than the file itself.
