How to Track Clicks and Content Performance From Google AI Overviews

You cannot isolate AI Overview clicks in GA4. Google counts them, like AI Mode clicks, as ordinary Organic Search from google.com, and GA4's AI Assistant channel explicitly excludes Google's own AI features. Search Console is the better source. Its Performance report includes clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode within normal web search data. Since 2026, its Generative AI performance report has also shown AI impressions by page, country and device. For keyword-level impact, combine Search Console query data with a rank tracker that records which keywords show an AI Overview, and compare click-through rates. The old Google Tag Manager trick of reading text fragments from AI Overview links stopped working for AI Overviews in May 2026.

How does Google report AI Overview and AI Mode traffic?

How does GA4 categorize traffic from Google AI Mode and AI Overviews?

As Organic Search. When someone clicks a link in an AI Overview or AI Mode, their browser arrives from google.com, just as from a normal result. GA4 therefore records source google and medium organic, in the Organic Search channel. Google's help page for GA4's default channels says the AI Assistant channel covers arrivals from sources such as ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Copilot and Grok, and that it excludes Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, which stay in Organic Search. Tracking other assistants is covered in how to track ChatGPT and other AI referrals in GA4.

Can GA4 identify Google AI Mode as a distinct referral source?

No. AI Mode links send visitors with the same google.com referrer as other Google results, and browsers typically pass only the domain, not the full results URL. There is no parameter in the landing URL that marks a visit as coming from AI Mode. GA4 has no way to tell the difference, and Google has not added a separate source for it.

How can I separate Google AI Mode visits from ordinary Google organic traffic?

Not directly. You can estimate it:

  • Use Search Console for scale. The Generative AI performance report shows which pages get impressions in AI Mode and AI Overviews, combined. Pages with heavy AI impressions are the ones most likely receiving AI clicks.
  • Watch landing pages. If organic sessions rise on pages with strong AI impressions while their normal rankings stay flat, AI features are a likely source.
  • Ask visitors. A "how did you find us" question with a "Google's AI answer" option captures some of it.
  • Compare periods before and after AI Mode launched in a market, as it has done at different times across countries.

Treat any split as an estimate, and say so in reports.

Why is AI Mode traffic missing from analytics when it hides referrer data?

For a few days in May 2025, it was. Google added rel="noopener noreferrer" to links in AI Mode, which stopped browsers sending a referrer, so AI Mode visits were recorded in GA4 as Direct. Google's John Mueller called it a bug, and Google fixed it within days. Since then AI Mode visits have arrived as Google organic. If you see unexplained Direct traffic today, look at other causes: consent banners that delay tracking, apps and in-app browsers, and links copied between devices.

Why does Google Analytics 4 show no traffic from Google AI Overviews?

Because it is there, but not labelled. AI Overview clicks sit inside Organic Search with every other Google click. GA4 has never had an AI Overviews source or report. If you expected a separate line, you will not find one; you need Search Console and keyword-level analysis instead.

What does Search Console show?

Search Console counts AI Overview and AI Mode activity in the normal Performance report:

  • An impression is counted when a link to your site appears in an AI Overview or AI Mode answer on the results page shown.
  • Position: an AI Overview occupies one position, and all links within it share that position.
  • A click on an external link inside an AI Overview or AI Mode counts as a click.
  • AI Mode follow-up questions count as new queries.

Since June 2026, and for all sites since August 31, 2026, the Generative AI performance report has shown impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode, combined, by page, country and device. It does not show queries, clicks or the text of the answers, and sites with few AI impressions may not see the report.

How to spot AI Overviews reducing clicks with Google Search Console impressions

Look for pages and queries where impressions hold steady or rise while clicks and click-through rate fall, and average position does not worsen. That pattern suggests an AI answer is satisfying searchers above your result. Steps:

  1. Export query and page data for 12 to 16 months from the Performance report.
  2. Filter informational queries, such as those starting with how, what or why, which trigger AI Overviews most.
  3. Plot click-through rate by month for queries with stable position.
  4. Check the Generative AI performance report for the same pages to see if AI impressions grew in the same months.
  5. Confirm with a rank tracker that the queries now show AI Overviews.

A fall in click-through rate at steady positions, on queries that now carry AI Overviews, is the clearest sign. Ahrefs's analysis of 300,000 keywords estimated that AI Overviews reduced the click-through rate of the top result by 58% by December 2025, against 34.5% in its earlier study. Ways to win back some clicks are covered in how to improve organic CTR when your page appears in an AI Overview.

Why do impressions and clicks diverge?

Why are impressions rising while organic traffic falls after AI answers appear?

Several things happen at once:

  • AI answers satisfy the query. People read the AI Overview and do not scroll.
  • Citations create impressions. Being linked in an AI Overview counts as an impression even if the searcher never looks at the link.
  • AI Mode adds queries. Follow-up questions are new queries, and each can produce impressions.
  • Results move down. Organic results appear lower on the page below AI Overviews and other features.

The effect varies by industry and query type. Commercial and local searches with clear actions keep more clicks than informational questions.

What does the “crocodile smile” or “great decoupling” mean for search?

Both describe the same chart. In Search Console, impressions and clicks used to move together. From 2024 onwards, many sites saw the lines separate: impressions rising, clicks flat or falling, so the chart looks like an opening crocodile's jaw. SEOs called it "the great decoupling", a term used in 2025 articles by Ahrefs and Moz, among others.

Part of the gap was real behaviour change from AI Overviews. Part was a measurement artefact. Rank-tracking tools that loaded 100 results per page inflated impressions for low positions. When Google removed the num=100 results parameter in September 2025, many sites saw impressions fall sharply. In one analysis of 319 properties, 87.7% lost impressions. So compare periods carefully across September 2025, and focus on clicks and click-through rate at stable positions rather than raw impressions.

How do you measure impact by keyword?

How to measure the traffic impact of Google AI Overviews by keyword

Search Console does not flag which queries showed an AI Overview, so you join two datasets:

  1. Get your keywords' AI Overview status from a rank tracker that records it, such as Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking or AccuRanker. Note whether an AI Overview appeared, and whether your site was cited.
  2. Export Search Console data for the same queries: impressions, clicks, click-through rate and average position, by month.
  3. Group the keywords into three sets: no AI Overview; AI Overview citing you; AI Overview not citing you.
  4. Compare click-through rates within each group at similar positions, before and after AI Overviews appeared.
  5. Weight by value, since a 20% click loss on a converting query matters more than on a curiosity query.

The result shows which topics lose most, and whether being cited softens the loss. Tool options are compared in Semrush vs SE Ranking vs BrightEdge for tracking AI Overviews and AccuRanker vs Semrush.

How to track Google AI Overview URL markers in GA4 with Google Tag Manager

This used to work, and mostly no longer does. For a while, links in AI Overviews often carried a text fragment, such as #:~:text=, telling the browser to scroll to and highlight the cited passage. Browsers do not send fragments to the server, and they are hidden from normal scripts. But a Google Tag Manager variable reading performance.getEntriesByType('navigation')[0].name could see the full URL. That let sites send a GA4 event recording which passage an AI Overview had pointed to.

Since early May 2026, Google has delivered AI Overview links as inline links without text fragments, according to analysts who maintained these setups. The method still captures clicks from People Also Ask and featured snippets, which continue to use fragments, but it no longer identifies AI Overview visits. One published GTM guide now carries a notice that the method can no longer reliably distinguish AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic. If you still run it, rename the event to something like "Google text-fragment click", not "AI Overview click".

How do you measure content performance, not just clicks?

Clicks are only part of the value when AI answers show your brand without a visit. A fuller picture includes:

  • AI impressions by page from the Generative AI performance report, showing which content Google's AI features use.
  • Citations tracked by rank or AI visibility tools, for your key queries.
  • Conversions from organic landing pages that receive AI impressions, since AI-referred visitors are often further along.
  • Branded search growth in Search Console, which can reflect AI exposure without a click.
  • Assisted conversions in GA4 where organic visits start a journey that finishes elsewhere.

Broader brand measurement in AI Overviews is covered in how to measure brand visibility in Google AI Overviews, and AI Mode's click rate in whether 93% of AI Mode sessions end without a click.

What should a monthly report include?

  1. Organic clicks and CTR for informational, commercial and branded queries separately.
  2. AI impressions by page from the Generative AI performance report, with month-on-month change.
  3. Keywords with AI Overviews, split by cited and not cited, with CTR for each group.
  4. Organic conversions from pages with high AI impressions.
  5. Branded search volume and direct traffic trends.
  6. Notes on measurement changes, such as the September 2025 impressions drop or new market launches.

We have not run these analyses across client accounts ourselves. This page is based on Google's Search Console and Analytics documentation, Google's statements, and published studies and analyses.

What might this look like in practice?

Consider an illustrative home insurance comparison site, Lorvholt, whose organic clicks fell 18% in a year while impressions rose. Its GA4 showed no AI Overview traffic at all, which confused the board. The analyst joined Search Console queries with a rank tracker's AI Overview flags. Click-through rate had fallen by half on "what does home insurance cover" queries with AI Overviews that did not cite Lorvholt, and by a fifth where Lorvholt was cited. Commercial quote queries were unaffected. The team rewrote its explainer pages to earn citations, reported AI impressions from Search Console alongside clicks, and stopped treating raw impressions as a success measure.

What do people ask about tracking AI Overview traffic?

Does GA4 show AI Overview traffic separately?

No. It is included in Organic Search, and GA4's AI Assistant channel excludes Google's AI features.

Does Search Console include AI Overview clicks?

Yes. Clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode are part of the Performance report.

Can I see which queries triggered AI Overviews in Search Console?

No. The Generative AI performance report shows pages, countries and devices, not queries. Use a rank tracker for that.

Does the text-fragment GTM method still work?

Not for AI Overviews since May 2026. It still works for People Also Ask and featured snippet clicks.
