Semrush vs SE Ranking vs BrightEdge for Tracking Google AI Overviews
Semrush, SE Ranking and BrightEdge all track which keywords trigger AI Overviews and whether your site is cited, but at different scales and prices. Semrush folds AI Overview tracking into Position Tracking and Organic Research, available even on free accounts, and records a citation as position one. SE Ranking offers dedicated AI Overview and AI Mode trackers, and its $129-a-month Core plan includes 100 daily AI prompts. BrightEdge is an enterprise platform, priced by quote. Its AI Catalyst and AI Hyper Cube separate brand mentions from citations across a whole category. For most small and mid-sized teams, Semrush or SE Ranking covers AI Overviews well. BrightEdge makes sense for large enterprises that already buy it for SEO.

How does each measure AI Overviews?
Semrush. In Position Tracking, you can filter your campaign to keywords that trigger an AI Overview, and see where your domain appears as a source. Semrush's documentation says a citation in an AI Overview is recorded as a number one ranking, regardless of your organic position. Organic Research shows, for any domain, the number of keywords for which it is cited in AI Overviews, and which pages are cited. Tracking on Google and AI Overviews works on any Semrush plan, including free. Other AI platforms need Semrush One or the AI Visibility Toolkit.
SE Ranking. Its AI Overviews tracker shows when you are mentioned, which of your pages are cited most, which competitors appear, and which sources, by type, drive answers. Its AI Mode tracker does the same for AI Mode, and tracks the number of links and the average position of your links over time. It also lets you compare visibility across AI Mode, AI Overviews and organic results for the same keywords.
BrightEdge. AI Catalyst tracks how often your brand is mentioned and cited across AI platforms, including AI Overviews, and splits the gap with competitors into mentions presence and citations presence. AI Hyper Cube shows which searches in your category trigger AI Overviews, who currently wins the citation, and where you have an opening. BrightEdge also builds prompts mapped to the buyer journey, flags when a competitor takes over an answer, and turns gaps into content briefs.
Why do their numbers differ?
Different tools can tell different stories about the same keywords:
- Counting conventions. Semrush's "citation equals position one" rule raises average position when you are cited. Separate AI Overview data from organic rankings when reporting.
- Mentions versus citations. Being named in the text and being linked as a source are different. BrightEdge reports both, and many tools report only one.
- Datasets. BrightEdge's Generative Parser research, from February 2026, found only about 17% of sources cited in AI Overviews also ranked in the organic top 10. Ahrefs, analysing 863,000 results pages, found 38% of AI Overview citations came from top-10 pages. Different keyword sets and definitions produce different answers. Both show that ranking and citation must be tracked separately.
- Sampling. AI Overviews change between checks, and not every search shows one. A daily sample per keyword gives a trend, not a precise rate.
Which fits which team?
- Semrush if you already use it for SEO and want AI Overview data inside rank tracking and competitor research. Its free-plan tracking of Google and AI Overviews is a low-cost start.
- SE Ranking if you want dedicated AI Overview and AI Mode trackers, plus daily prompts for other assistants, at a mid-market price.
- BrightEdge if you are a large enterprise that needs category-wide AI Overview intelligence, mention and citation gap analysis, and content workflows, and you already run BrightEdge for SEO.

What might a comparison on real keywords show?
Consider an illustrative insurance comparison site tracking 300 keywords in both Semrush and SE Ranking for a month. Semrush showed AI Overviews on 41% of the keywords, with the site cited on a third of those. Its average position improved by two places, almost entirely because AI Overview citations counted as position one. SE Ranking's AI Overview tracker showed similar trigger rates. It added that the site's links usually appeared fourth or fifth among cited sources, and that a price comparison competitor held the first link on most keywords. The site reported organic positions without AI Overview citations mixed in. It added citation position as a separate measure, and rewrote three guides where the competitor held the lead link.
How much does each cost?
- Semrush: keyword tracking with AI Overview data is available on free and paid plans. The AI Visibility Toolkit costs $99 a month per domain, and Semrush One bundles start at $199 a month.
- SE Ranking: Core costs $129 a month, or $103.20 billed annually, with 2,000 keywords and 100 prompts tracked daily, and a 14-day trial without a card. Growth costs $279 a month. The AI Search add-on adds 200 prompts for $89 a month.
- BrightEdge: pricing is by quote only, so ask for one before comparing.
How should you track AI Overviews whichever tool you use?
- Group keywords by topic and intent, and include question-style keywords, which trigger AI Overviews more often.
- Track three measures separately: whether an AI Overview appears, whether you are cited, and whether you are mentioned.
- Report organic rankings without AI Overview citations mixed in.
- Add Google Search Console's generative AI report, which shows AI Overview and AI Mode impressions for your pages, as first-party data.
- Record which of your pages is cited, and whether it is the page you intended.
- Watch sentiment. BrightEdge's research found AI Overviews 44% more likely than ChatGPT to surface negative sentiment about a brand.
