Semrush vs AthenaHQ and BrightEdge for Broader AI Visibility Tracking

Broader can mean more AI engines, more markets, or more connected data, and each of these tools is broad in a different way. AthenaHQ covers the most engines at entry: eleven models for $295 a month, but only one region until you move to Enterprise. Semrush is broadest in research data and SEO context. It has a database of more than 300 million prompts, tracking in over 220 countries and AI bot log analysis, from $99 a month, although its daily prompt tracking covers three engines. BrightEdge is broadest across an enterprise's markets and workflows, with mentions, citations, buyer-journey mapping and AI agent logs, sold by quote. Decide which kind of breadth you need before comparing prices.

Which kind of breadth do you need?

Six dimensions separate "broad" from "narrow" AI visibility tracking:

  1. Engines: how many AI assistants and search features are tracked.
  2. Markets and languages: whether you can track several countries in their own languages.
  3. Prompt sources: only your own prompts, or also a large research database.
  4. Signals: mentions, citations, sentiment, position and narratives.
  5. Connected data: rankings, traffic, conversions and AI crawler logs in the same place.
  6. Action: content, technical and outreach help, not just reporting.

No tool leads on all six. The table below shows where each is strong.

Semrush: broadest research and SEO context

Semrush's strength is everything around the AI answers. Its prompt database, which it puts at more than 317 million prompts across 42 geographic databases, shows what people ask in each market. Its Brand Performance reports analyse how four AI platforms describe you. Its SEO suite shows where rankings and AI citations overlap, and its Log File Analyzer shows how AI bots crawl your site.

The narrow point is daily tracking of your own prompts, which covers ChatGPT Search, AI Mode and Gemini, and prompt counts: 25 on the $99 toolkit, 50 on Semrush One Starter at $199, and 200 on Advanced at $549. Semrush Enterprise AIO broadens this considerably, with brand, market, city and product-level tracking and GA4 or Adobe Analytics data, sold by demo.

AthenaHQ: broadest engine coverage per dollar

AthenaHQ's Starter plan tracks eleven models, more than most tools at any price, and topics are unlimited. The constraint is credits: 3,600 answers a month, one credit per answer. Eleven models daily is only possible for about ten prompts. Starter also covers a single region, so multi-market tracking needs Enterprise, which adds regions, languages, personas and a citation-scoring model. The details are in the AthenaHQ review.

BrightEdge: broadest across an enterprise

BrightEdge is built for large organisations that run SEO across many sites and markets. Its AI Catalyst separates being mentioned from being cited, maps prompts to buyer journey stages, and shows who wins AI Overview citations. AI Agent Insights uses log files to show how AI agents reach your content. Its breadth is organisational: many teams, markets and reports in one enterprise workflow. It publishes no prices.

What does a broad set-up cost?

Take a brand tracking 100 prompts on five engines in three markets, daily. That is 100 × 5 × 3 × 30 = 45,000 answers a month.

  • Semrush: daily prompt tracking covers three of the five engines. Brand Performance adds Perplexity weekly on Semrush's question set, with extra locations at $99 each. A full five-engine, three-market set-up points towards Enterprise AIO.
  • AthenaHQ: 45,000 answers and three regions exceed Starter, so it needs Enterprise.
  • BrightEdge: quote only.

At this scale, all three become enterprise purchases. Below it, for one market and a few engines, Semrush One or AthenaHQ Starter are the realistic choices.

Does broader tracking pay off?

Only if the extra breadth changes decisions. Three checks before paying for it:

  • Do your buyers use the extra engines? Ask sales and support which assistants customers mention, and look at AI referral sources in your analytics. If almost all AI visits come from ChatGPT and Google, tracking eleven engines adds noise more than insight.
  • Do answers differ by market? Run ten prompts by hand in each country you sell in. If the brands and sources named are much the same, one market's tracking may be enough for now.
  • Will anyone act on the connected data? Bot logs and traffic joins are valuable only if someone can fix crawl problems and update pages each month.

A common pattern is to start narrow, with two or three engines in your main market, and widen coverage when a new market or engine starts to matter. Breadth bought too early often goes unread, while breadth added in response to a real gap tends to get used.

How should you trial them?

  1. List your engines and markets from customer and analytics evidence, not from the tool's list.
  2. Trial AthenaHQ's free Essential plan with ten prompts on the engines it covers.
  3. Run the same prompts in Semrush One's trial, and compare what its research data adds.
  4. Ask BrightEdge for a demo on your own prompts and markets, not a generic one.
  5. Price the set-up you actually need on each, per answer and per market.

Which should you choose?

  • Semrush if your team already works in Semrush, and you want research data, SEO context and AI bot logs alongside AI tracking.
  • AthenaHQ if you need many engines, including Claude, Copilot, Grok and DeepSeek, and can work within one region or budget for Enterprise.
  • BrightEdge if you are an enterprise on its platform and need AI visibility inside existing SEO workflows across markets.

What might a choice look like?

Consider an illustrative software company, Druvby, selling in the US, UK and Germany. Its SEO team used Semrush already, and its buyers used ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude. Semrush One covered ChatGPT tracking and gave it German prompt research, but not Claude. AthenaHQ Starter covered Claude and Perplexity, but only one region. Druvby kept Semrush for research and SEO, and used AthenaHQ Starter for its US market on the three engines its buyers used most. It planned to review AthenaHQ Enterprise once German revenue justified tracking a second region.
