Where Are Google AI Overviews Available, and Why Might They Not Appear in My Region?
AI Overviews are available in more than 200 countries and territories, and Google's help page now lists 98 languages. AI Mode has been available in over 200 countries and territories since October 2025. Europe was the slowest region to get them. AI Overviews reached much of the European Union in 2025, but France only got AI Overviews and AI Mode on July 22, 2026, after a long regulatory dispute. If you still do not see them, the usual reasons are the query itself, your language or account settings, a Web-only filter, a work or school account, or a location Google Search does not serve, such as mainland China. AI Overviews also do not appear for every search, even where they are available.

Which countries have Google AI Overviews in 2026?
Google's help page lists more than 200 countries and territories across the Americas, Asia-Pacific, and Europe, the Middle East and Africa, including the United States, Canada, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, India, Japan and South Korea. It lists 98 languages, from Afrikaans to Zulu, including Arabic, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Hindi, Japanese, Korean and most European languages.
The main gaps are places where Google Search itself is not generally available, such as mainland China, and a small number of countries missing from the list. Because the list changes, check Google's AI Overviews help page for your country rather than relying on older articles, many of which still say AI Overviews are US-only.
Is Google AI Mode available worldwide, and what access requirements apply?
Nearly. Google expanded AI Mode in October 2025 to more than 35 new languages and over 40 new countries and territories, bringing it to over 200 in total, including much of Europe. France followed in July 2026.
Access requirements have loosened over time. When AI Mode was an experiment in Search Labs, it required users to be 18 or older with a personal Google account. Today it is part of Google Search in supported countries, with no Labs sign-up needed. Some limits still apply:
- Work and school accounts. Google Workspace administrators can control access to Google services, and age-based settings can apply to accounts designated as under 18.
- Age. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode are available for users designated as under 18 in most countries, territories and languages, but not all.
- Features within AI Mode, such as agentic booking or Personal Intelligence, roll out separately and often start in the US only.
How AI Mode works is covered in what Google AI Mode is.
Do EU regulations delay or block Google AI Overviews in Europe?
They delayed them, and in France for a long time. In March 2025, Google began rolling out AI Overviews in the European Economic Area, starting with Austria, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Portugal and Spain. AI Mode followed across much of Europe in October 2025. France was the last major Western European market. Google France's managing director told AFP that regulatory hurdles, not language or engineering, were the obstacle. The background was a long dispute with France's competition authority over publishers' neighbouring rights, which led to fines of €500 million in 2021 and €250 million in 2024. Both features launched in France on July 22, 2026.
EU rules still shape what European users see. In September 2026, Google made what it called significant changes to Search in Europe to comply with the Digital Markets Act. It changed how hotel, airline and restaurant results are shown, including removing real-time prices from some units, and said users outside the EU would not be affected. Google said the changes would also apply, where relevant, to AI Overviews and AI Mode, so European users searching for hotels, flights or restaurants may see fewer prices and filters in AI answers too. If AI features in Europe change again, the Google help page is the reliable record.
Why might AI Overviews not appear for you?
- The query. AI Overviews appear only when Google judges they add value. Navigational searches, many simple fact lookups, and some sensitive topics often show none.
- Language settings. If your Google language is not supported, or differs from the query language, results may differ.
- Location detection. Google uses signals such as IP address. A VPN or travel can put you in a different market.
- The Web filter. Choosing the Web filter shows only links, without AI features.
- Account type. Work, school or supervised accounts can have features restricted.
- Labs settings. Experimental "AI in Search" features in Labs can be turned off, though the core AI Overviews are part of Search itself.
- Browser or app. Older app versions and some browsers may not show every feature.
How can a business check AI Overviews in other regions?
- Search Console. The Generative AI performance report shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode by country, device and page, so you can see where your pages appear.
- Rank trackers that record AI Overviews by location and language.
- Local checks by colleagues or customers in each market, since results vary by location.
- Hreflang and regional pages, so Google can show the right version in each market, as covered in why AI Overviews show UK pages to US users.

We have not tested availability from each country ourselves. This page is based on Google's help pages and announcements, and reporting on the French launch and the EU changes.
Does availability change how you should optimise?
Not much. AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on Google's regular index and ranking systems in every market, so the same work applies everywhere: crawlable, indexable pages in the local language, accurate regional details, and a strong presence on local sources. What differs is timing. In markets where the features arrived recently, such as France, expect traffic patterns to shift over the following months, and set a baseline in Search Console before drawing conclusions.
What might this look like in practice?
Consider an illustrative French homeware brand, Maison Verdane, whose marketing team in Lyon never saw AI Overviews while colleagues in its Brussels office did. Until July 2026, that was expected: the features had not launched in France. After the French launch, the team checked Search Console's Generative AI performance report. French impressions from AI Overviews appeared within days, but mostly for its Belgian pages. The team fixed missing hreflang tags between the French and Belgian sites, and French pages began to take their place over the following weeks.
What do people ask about AI Overviews availability?
Are AI Overviews only available in the US?
No. They are available in more than 200 countries and territories and in 98 languages listed by Google.
When did AI Overviews launch in France?
On July 22, 2026, together with AI Mode.
Why don't I see AI Overviews for every search?
Google shows them only when it judges they are helpful. Many queries show a standard results page.
Can I turn off AI Overviews?
There is no switch to remove them, but the Web filter shows link-only results.
